Lawrence Pizzi is indeed the King of Eco Fabrics. The fabrics he creates with his eco mills is nothing short of miraculous and futuristic. In this latest showing, there were beautiful duster coats in white, camel brown, and cerulean blue that looked like organza but were made from glass bottles. There was a white dress with flutter sleeves and artfully draped across the body, made of crushed eggshell, combined with 7% to 8% polyester that helps to bind it together. If we didn’t know better, we would have sworn that the eggshell pieces were made from high quality satin crepe.
As for knit substitutes, recycled plastic bottles are morphed into cozy chenille tops and a beautiful unisex seafoam cardigan. The biggest surprise though were sweaters that felt like double ply cashmere that were made of cement.

In a post-interview, Lawrence explained, “What you saw today is the result of a lot of trial and error. We’re calling this version, ‘cement 2.0’.” The process originated in Japan and improved when he collaborated with his mills in Sri Lanka to improve on the process. The old saying, “One man’s garbage is another man’s treasure” certainly applies to Lawrence Pizzi’s work.
The irony remains that being good to the planet is not an inexpensive proposition. But in time, hopefully, like organic food, prices for doing the right thing will come down to make them more accessible to a larger population.
