Barbie

Barbie moonlights

Does Barbie need another job? Isn’t Barbie being a fashion icon and the most sought-after doll enough? Apparently not!! It appears that Barbie is now being employed a social media influencer to give her opinions on clothing and beauty products.

Recently, Barbie attended a conference in Hawaii to promote Dyson’s new Supersonic hairdryer. Her posts about this new product from Dyson received 41.9 thousand likes on Barbie’s Instagram account. Dyson has not revealed how much Barbie was paid for her post.

Barbie’s Instagram account is managed by a team of senior designers, who create her custom made outfits, design scaled sets and scout locations for her photo shoots. In addition, the team works with an in-house digital and marketing team alongside of publicity agency KCD.

Well, aint that a blip!! Well, if the Supreme Court can rule that a corporation has the same rights as humans; then I guess Barbie can launch a new career as a social media influencer. Still, it feels kind of creepy, don’t you think?

Swimwear manufacture Speedo as well as Ralph Lauren have dropped sponsorships and endorsements for Olympic gold medal swimmer Ryan Lochte amid his false statements involving vandalism and false claims that he was held a gunpoint and robbed by police during the Rio Olympics. Lochte will also lose endorsement deals with Airweave and Gentle Hair.

“While we enjoyed a winning relationship with Ryan for over a decade and he has been an important member of the Speedo team, we cannot condone behaviour that is counter to the values this brand has long stood for. We appreciated his many achievements and hope he moves forward and learns from this experience,” the Speedo statement read.

Ralph Lauren said in a statement: “Ralph Lauren continues to proudly sponsor the US Olympic and Paralympic Team and the values that its athletes embody. Ralph Lauren’s endorsement agreement with Ryan Lochte was specifically in support of the Rio 2016 Olympics and the company will not be renewing his contract.”

Though neither Elbaz nor Oscar de la Renta have confirmed the appointment, inside sources contend it is a done deal!!

Just call me Professor Banks

Who would have thought that teaching models how to smize or giving aspiring models runway advice could lead to a teaching job at Stanford? Well, it has, especially if you are Tyra Banks.

Get them while they’re young

Post the Rana Plaza collapse in 2013, leading retailers and manufacturers around the world pledged to improve the working conditions of millions of garments workers. Some substantive changes have been made, such as some wage increases and shorter workdays. However, when one country improves working conditions, retailers will move their factories to countries where the working conditions are inhuman. Myanmar, formerly Burma, is one such country.

The book Modeslavar details the inhuman working conditions of garment workers in Mynamar where 14-year-old girls work up to 12 hours days, six days a week for some of the lowest documented wages. Though all these worker abuses violate the International Labor Organization (ILO) convention on child labor, which allows children as young as 14 to work in developing countries such as Myanmar, as long as it does not threaten their safety or health or affect their education, the abuses continue.

The two factories that are involved in these child labor violations are Myanmar Century Liaoyuan Knitted Wear and Myanmar Garment Wedge, and H&M is one of the factories clients. Other retailers include Marks & Spencer, Primark and New Look, C&A. and Gap.

In response to the allegations, H&M responded, “H&M does of course not tolerate child labor in any form” …. “It is of utmost importance to us that our products are made under good working conditions and with consideration to safety, health and the environment.”

Fashion News Alert: KIA Style 360 Returns to NYFW, Katy Perry Launches Shoe Line, Lily-Rose Fronts Chanel’s N°5 L’Eau, and Macy’s to Close 100 Stores

Instead of pining about another celebrity fashion line, maybe it should be questioned which celebrities don’t have their own fashion lines. That said; Katy Perry has jumped into the fashion fray by teaming with Global Brands Group for her own show line, Katy Perry Footwear.

It is no surprise that Katy Perry would delve into the world of fashion design in that Katy has long been associated with some high-end fashion brands including Kenzo, Moschino, and Jeremy Scott’s eponymous brand—serving as kind of inspiration. Katy also has a fragrance line Purr By Katy Perry, currently sold at Nordstrom.

“It’s been a creative goal of mine to be a real contributor in the affordable fashion space,” said Perry to WWD. “Launching a footwear collection felt like a natural first step for me. After years of investigating and researching partnerships to find the right fit for the debut of my line, I found that Global Brands most resonated with my artistic ideas. They understand my vision, my eye for detail, and have the international reach and resources to bring my canvas of ideas to life.”

Katy Perry Footwear includes a range of sandals, sneakers, stilettos, and pumps designed to reflect her own daring tastes in fashion and her love for bold colors. The shoes made their debut at FFANY earlier this month. Katy Perry Footwear will launch in fall 2017 in retail stores, department stores and online.

Style 360 is back

NYFW: The Shows spring 2017 is less than a month away. And on the heels of the impending fashion event, KIA Style 360 returns for its 12th season.

Celebrity brands slated to show this season are Serena Williams’ Signature Statement Collection presented by HSN, Vipe Activewear by Angela Simmons, and Kristin Cavallari’s jewelers collections for Emerald Duv jewelry and Chinese Laundry. KIA Style 360 shows will take place on September 12-15.

KIA Style 360 is the brainchild of A-list communication, a Los Angeles-based special events firm. “I’m humbled to be working with so many renewing designers and partners this season, some who have been with us for a few years now,” said David Manning, executive producer and owner of A-List Communications, in a statement. “Their success with the program is our blueprint in welcoming this year’s new partners and designers into the family and allowing us to continue our offering to the fashion community.”

Lily-Rose Depp and Chanel N°5

While Johnny Depp and ex-wife Amber Heard settle their divorce proceedings, daughter Lily-Rose Depp continues her domination in fashion as the brand ambassador of Chanel’s N’°5 L’Eau. Lily-Rose was pegged as Chanel’s brand ambassador a few seasons ago.

“‘N°5 L’Eau’ is not an eau de cologne. It is by no means a watered-down version of the original fragrance since, for Chanel, each version is a genuine olfactory creation. ‘N°5 L’Eau’ is the contemporary N°5: a blend whose signature note is modernity and whose leitmotif is freshness.”

With this new Chanel campaign Lily-Rose follows in the footsteps or her mother Vanessa Paradis who also had a Chanel fragrance campaign in the 1990s. ‘N°5 L’Eau’ will be available in stores on September 2.

Macy's_stores

Macy’s closes stores

Macy’s announced it will close 100 stores in 2017. This string of store closings comes as a result of sliding sales, and online competition. The announced 100 store closings represent 15% of Macy’s 675 stores.

Macy’s hopes to improve decreased profits by hosting more in-store events, bringing more brand stores within Macy’s, and improving online search and ordering processes. Like many mega retail stores, Macy’s has experienced a precipitous drop in sales due to online shopping and other shopping alternatives.

“We decided to close a larger number of stores proactively so we can invest in a winning customer experience in our most productive and highest-potential locations,” said Macy’s President Jeff Gennette in a statement. Gennette is set to take the CEO post from Terry Lundgren in early 2017.

Fashion News Alert: Anthony Davis and Saks Fifth Avenue Collaborate, Christian Louboutin Designs Cuban Athletes Olympic Uniforms, and Stuart Weitzman Steps Down

In case you didn’t notice the Cuban athletes wore some really sharp jackets during the Opening Ceremonies at the 2016 Rio Olympics. There is a reason for that style and panache. Christian Louboutin designed the Cuban teams’ Olympic uniforms.

According to the huffingtonpost.com, the collection features scarlet jackets for men and sandy tones for women, calfskin sneakers for men and low-heeled sandals for women. These items are complemented by an array of shorts, skirts and capris, carried out in a chic and sober way.

But the question that still comes to mind is why the Cuban team? It would make more sense to design outfits for the Brazilian Olympic team because there are three Louboutin stores in Brazil, but none in Cuba.

The idea of designing for the Cuban team came to Christian Louboutin during a photo shoot on the Cuban coastline with good friend Henry Tai. Henry Tai is a former international handball player and founder of e-concept store SportyHenri.com. The design motif was a custom-made wardrobe that was sporty but could be worn to a formal event. If you would like to purchase items from this project, think again!! This project was a labor of love for Christian Louboutin and cannot be purchased in stores or online.

In a statement Armani detailed that the founArmani’s legacydation will, “safeguard the governance of assets of the Armani Group and ensure that these are kept stable over time in respect of and consistent with some principles that are particularly important to me.” Armani also stated, future management of the company would have to be committed to “innovation and excellence,” and be supported by “appropriate investments, prudent and balanced financial management, limited recourse to debt and a careful approach to acquisitions.”

Is London falling down?

Whether you agreed with the United Kingdom’s vote to leave the European Union, one thing is for sure, since Brexit UK retail sales have since it’s most precipitous drop in four years. The decline in retail sales foretells a possible UK recession.

The Confederation of British Industry (CBI) said that retails sales fell dramatically between June 28 and July 14 with retailers reducing more orders from suppliers since the 2008 financial crisis.  This is a startling development in that the British economy was experiencing a robust growth prior to the Brexit vote.

“While conditions in the retail sector have weakened, we should be careful about reading too much too soon, as consumers were likely to err on the side of caution in the immediate period following a vote to leave the EU,” CBI chief economist Rain Newton-Smith said in a recent fashionmag.com article. Still, according to HSBC economist Elizabeth Martins, “It’s a bad start,” said. “If you are looking for a relatively resilient consumer as we are then it’s not particularly encouraging.”

Just Cavalli’s love affair with Coney Island

It seems as though Just Cavalli cannot get enough of Ferris wheels, rollercoasters, and cotton candy. Just Cavalli heads back to Coney Island for its fall 2016 campaign. Creative Director Peter Dundas once again has chosen Coney Island’s ‘Americana’ aesthetic as the backdrop for the brand’s hedonistic fall/winter 2016 campaign.

Inspired by Andy Warhol screen prints, glam and punk rock, fashion photographer Sebastian Faena captures the hedonism of the punk and glam rock era with models sporting neon zebra stripes, leopard prints, and biker jackets paired with pink pixie haircuts, shaggy bob, and slightly smeared lipstick. All this is photographed on a bare boardwalk during early morning hours as models portray night revelers ending a bacchanalian night of hedonistic pleasure.

Betsey Bloomingdale transitions

Fashion icon Betsey Bloomingdale, wife of Alfred Bloomingdale and heir to the Bloomingdale department stores, has passed away. She passed away on July 20, at the age of 93 after a long illness.

As a member of New York City’s high society, Betsey Bloomingdale was a curator of couture garments, even having an exhibit of her gowns at the Los Angeles’ Fashion Institute of Design and Merchandising  (FIDM) in 2009. Curator Kevin Jones said of Betsey Bloomingdale, “[Betsey Bloomingdale] explained all of the mystery of the haute couture that has faded away. Now haute couture is used for media and that’s great. But very few people lived the haute couture and she was one of them. For her, it was just a part of her life.”

Slimane gets his due

As reported by the AFB, French commercial court has ordered Kering to pay Saint Laurent former creative director Hedi Slimane $13 million dollars damages. Hedi Slimane filed a lawsuit concerning the non-compete clause signed with Kering, calling for the non-compete clause to be reinstated after it was lifted by the parent company.

“We won,” said Herve Temime, Slimane’s lawyer to Reuters. “I welcome this decision which is entirely completely natural, as the contractual arrangements where crystal clear.”

When Slimane abruptly left Saint Laurent on April 28, Kering, the holding company for Saint Laurent, sought to remove the non-compete clause from Slimane’s contract. Slimane took legal action against Kering demanding “payment compensation.” Kering has yet to comment.

According to fashionmag.com, clothing collected will be distributed to over 60 local recipient organizations across the country. Over the past six years, the Canadian Suit Drive has collected more than 250,000 items of clothing.
