Editors’ Pick: Serena Williams x Stuart Weitzman Spring 2020 Campaign

Serena Williams is not only a star on the tennis courts—23 Grand Slams—she also makes strong fashion statements that are followed by her admirers. Whether is conquering opponents of the tennis courts, standing up and supporting causes that affect her community or being a strong role model for her daughter and millions of women of color, Serena Williams continues to set a standard of excellence that defies race, gender, and socio-economic backgrounds.

For their spring 2020 ad campaign, Stuart Weitzman looked for such an icon that embodied elements of courage, resilience and hope. These qualities are especially apropos in these challenging times. The Stuart Weitzman 2020 ad campaign reinforces the notion that women possess the innate strength to be symbols of hope for their communities—a message that is especially relevant right now. “Now, more than ever, is a moment to focus on hope and moving forward,” Serena explains. “I want women of every generation to be inspired to do so, one step at a time.”

In addition to the brands spring 2020 campaign, Stuart Weitzman continues its philanthropic relationship with Vital Voices Global Partnership, an international nonprofit dedicated to investing in women leaders who drive global change. Together with Serena Williams, Stuart Weitzman has selected two women leaders—and their organizations focused on lifting up women of color—who have stepped up to support vulnerable communities in the midst of COVID-19.

Gabriela Karefa-Johnson, who styled the spring 2020 campaigns describes the look of the campaign as “classic and refined to elegant and bold to sleek and sexy—all facets that could describe our muse.” The black-and-white campaign images were shot by photographer Ethan James Green.

In describing the reasons, she chose to be a part of this spring 2020 campaign, Serena Williams detailed, “I’ve been wearing [Stuart Weitzman shoes] for probably over a decade now and they’re a real staple in my closet … Most of all… it’s SW and it has my initials.”

Although fashion may not be essential to everyone, retail therapy is saving the lives and mental health of fashionistas everywhere. As this pandemic continues, designers have shifted their consciousness, pushing for more eco-centric and sustainable styles, which has the potential to drastically shift the dynamics of the fashion industry.

Leave it to loafers

Who could say no to a school-girl classic? Satisfy your appetite for relaxed footwear with this chic classic shoe silhouette. As the most practical, the loafer is fab and functional in both flat and heel form. With an elevated twist, our minimalistic loafer has become more playful with featured styles spotted: block heels, chunky soles, and luxe materials. Taking on a more modern interpretation, designers—Loewe, Prada, Fendi-—have re-imagined the loafer delivering fresh perspectives.

Now and forever flatforms

We can’t get enough of ‘90s nostalgia, especially a Spice Girl-inspired trend. Hurry and scoop up this trend before they sell out. Following endless seasons of kitten heels, reach new heights in the return of platforms. Naturally, a fan favorite, this chunky shoe silhouette has channeled many moods from minimalist, sporty or feminine. Liven up any basic summer staple by opting for any sky-high version platform ranging from texture, color, and modern designs.

Chain reaction

No need to buy any old anklet, this summer’s shoe trend comes as a two-for-one with built-in chain accent anklets. Chain details applied to footwear are an unexpected statement-making jewelry trend for spring 2020 runways. From oversized and chunky to delicate, designers from Gucci, Zimmerman, Oscar de la Renta, and Proenza Schouler applied heavy-metal links and chain-adorned heels. With an evening feel yet daytime look, strappy sandals, sleek booties, basic flats, and playful mules add a fresh embellished metal-link anklet for an extra addition. It’s hard to relive a time of outfits without this timeless hardware bling.

Bring on the boots

Are boots replacing pants? Boots are set to take over 2020 as the “it” essential to own. Climbing to the top of the trend market each season, boot styles have been endorsed by designers for the spring 2020 season. Growing taller and wider from knee-high to over-the-knee, and wide shaft legs, boot silhouettes have drastically upgraded and reinvented the status quo. Whether it’s colorful metallics, tie-up, cut-out, neutrals, platform, embroidered flare, or western, these boots and booties have become more glamorous and were made for both walking and style.

The thong song

Define summer and commit to these glorified flip-flops as must-have, hot weather classics. And no, we do not mean the rubbery $10 for 10 flip flops from past shopping lists. Elevate to something a little more runway-ready and speak to your refined minimalistic heart. This minor detail will take over the sandal world as we know it. Expect to see colorful, metallic, super-stacked versions of this diverse shoe trend. Fashion influencers such as Kendall Jenner, Hailey Beiber, and Rihanna have all embraced this throwback shoe look.

Toe-ring sandals

Could this be the new flip-flops? Minimalism has been the driving force taking a new design form in this season’s footwear. This tiny addition takes on a sculptural element for a sense of flair and unpredictability come spring/summer.

Strap happy

With a retro take on the gladiator trend, lace-up straps are a ‘90s dream. With new fabrications, straps can be found in suede, leather, or additional charms and embellishments for spice. For days dressed up or down, this signature trend can be worn with any outfit; pair your strappy ankles with trousers for an editorial look.

Healthier Skin Thanks to Quarantining Your Makeup

Excessive makeup has been all the rage these past few years. With the rise of social media came tutorial after tutorial on heavy makeup looks (including the ever-popular contouring ala Kim Kardashian). The issue is, all those products can clog pours, result in breakouts and damage the appearance of your skin.

That said, too much foundation is not the only issue our skin is facing during this coronavirus lockdown. All those squirts of hand sanitizer and operating-room-worthy handwashing routines can leave your skin dry and itchy.

To dig in deep and see how we can really improve the appearance and health of our skin during these makeup free days, Fashion Reverie caught up with holistic esthetician, Stephanie Smith, owner of Stephanie Smith Skincare in Franklin, TN and Suki Skincare partner.

In a time of social distancing, “allowing the skin to take a break from pollution and makeup is priceless. The cells in the skin have [ a big job of] repairing themselves, and this is much easier to do if they are not weighed down by artificial colors, and ingredients that clog the pores,” Smith explains. “Picture your skin cells wearing heavy Hazmat suits.”

Mineral makeup is the exception, but even then, it’s important to give your skin time to rest. Additionally, most of us are under quite a bit of stress—whether that’s from financial worries to helping take care of your family. Stress has perverse effects on all our organs, so it’s no surprise it also negatively effects our skin. Smith explains, “[stress] hampers the body’s ability to repair itself, leading to imbalance, sensitivity and breakouts.”

While you use this time to step away from the makeup, hair repair and take of your skin further, Smith shares her seven top tips for beautiful skin that you can practice now while stuck at home, or any time.

  1. Simplify your Routine

I always recommend that if my clients are experiencing stressful times, such as transitional changes in their life, it’s a good idea to simplify their skin routine. Perhaps, your normal routine is five steps, that may be too much to maintain under the circumstances.

  1. Use Cosmeceutical Grade Multi-taskers

One way to do that is with multitasking products that contain “cosmeceutical”Ingredients. (Cosmeceuticals contain concentrated, active ingredients that are able to penetrate the layers of the dermis, to effectively change the skin.) Examples of some multi-tasking products include cleansers and toners that also exfoliate, facial oils that can also be used as a cleanser and eyebrow growth serum, and masques that hydrate and reduce the appearance of pores while feeding the skin nutrients.

Image courtesy of K3 Media Collective

  1. Sleep in it

What’s fabulous is to find a skincare masque that you can sleep in, which behaves like an exfoliant, serum, and night cream in one.

You wake up, shower it off, and your skin looks like you’ve been to the spa. Masques have such concentrated ingredients that they often are excellent alternatives to a night cream. I lazily applied the Moisture Rich Brightening Masque from Suki Skincare last night, fell asleep, and couldn’t believe how hydrated and glowy my skin looked this morning.

  1. Keep an Eye on Skin Health

During this time of few visits to the doctor, don’t forget to pay attention to new spots or moles on the skin that are changing, or are sensitive to the touch, both of which can be signs of skin cancer (I’ve had it twice).

If you’re not sure if a spot is changing, take a picture with a smartphone, or have a friend [who’s quarantining with you] take one, and then compare it to a picture taken each week. This makes it very easy to see changes, since you can enlarge the photos on your camera. If you are concerned, send the photo to your esthetician, (we’re trained to screen for skin cancer!) or a doctor.

  1. Use Facial Oils to Protect the Face

If you are a healthcare worker, and are experiencing inflamed, sensitive skin due to wearing a masque, apply a facial oil, and then blot with a towel before you put one on. The oil will soothe and protect the skin, and guard against loss of moisture, which leads to cracks and dryness on the skin’s surface.

Using an oil to cleanse your face is also a relief at the end of the day. A good facial oil blend will feature oils that won’t clog the pores, such as jojoba, hemp, and sunflower. It can also contain essential oils to balance and heal the skin, such as lavender and chamomile which are soothing.

  1. Use Body Oils to Protect the Body

If your hands are in a state of emergency from all of the washing and hand sanitizer, keep a body oil by the sink and apply it to wet hands after washing a few times a day. It will protect the skin and give it the nutrients it needs to heal.

The body can tolerate heavier oils which stay on the surface as a barrier and can also be used for massage. Good choices include sweet almond, olive, carrot seed, avocado, and wheat germ.

  1. Wash Your Face Well

If we’re washing our hands for 20 seconds—that’s two rounds of the “Happy Birthday” song—wash your face for at least that long as well, to effectively remove germs!

Following these steps will help speed up skin recovering and keep you healthy and looking great! “There is definitely a learning curve to adapting to our ‘new normal,’” Smith shares. “To put things into perspective, I like to think of it this way: Beautiful skin is like toilet paper. Everyone wants it, but the world won’t end if you have to improvise.”

Editors’ Pick: Vera Wang’s Spring 2020 Campaign

Are you going a little stir crazy? Of course, you are. Self-isolation can cause the mind and body to become very restless. And restlessness and aimlessness can lead to mind fatigue.

Don’t fret, stimulate your mind and visual senses with Vera Wang’s spring 2020 campaign. And in this spring 2020 campaign Vera Wang lets her penchant for combining disparate fabrications and non-traditional silhouettes shine through.

This campaign culminates on Vera Wang’s 30th anniversary of her ready-to-wear collection. And her first time back on the runway after a two-year absence.

Wang in this collection vaguely drew inspiration from Edwardian silhouettes combined with a nod to the current trend of lingerie as outerwear. “I was searching for a new formula for evening that I thought was more modern,” Wang explained in a vogue.com review.

This collection featured hip-grazing chainmail slips featuring garter belts, sheer bra tops worn loose and unfastened over structured pieces, ruffled bustles, short shorts, and pelmet minis. And though this collection referenced Wang’s predilection for Edwardian silhouettes, the dark sensuality of this collection elevated the garments beyond a vintage homage to a modern reflection on dark romance.

This spring 2020 ad campaign was captured by photography duo Inez & Vinoodh with Vaughan wearing trumpet skirts, ruffled minidresses and flared sleeves. And the wildly layered hairstyles added a particular whimsy and downtown appeal.

Don’t let the coronavirus sequester inhibit your creativity and personal style. When this is all over let the glory and dark majesty of Vera Wang’s spring 2020 collection inspire you to express your own romantic whimsy and sensuality.

Use This Pandemic Downtime to Detox Your Hair

We have always known that excessive heat and daily styling is bad for hair. So, while stuck inside due to the COVID-19 pandemic, take this time to detox from everyday essential styling in favor for going au natural.

According to Nicki Bianco, Creative Director at Saints & Sinners, “This has been a much- needed rest and detox for most people’s overworked strands. The lack of hair coloring, chemical services, heat styling, and environmental damage will surely have restorative effects. Chemical services and hot tools can strip the hair of protein and moisture, making the hair dry, brittle and fragile.”

Sal Misseri, owner of Reverie Salon adds that, “one thing people may not even realize is that environmental factors play a big part in the health of your hair and skin. There are so many toxins and pollutants in the air especially in a big city, and all of that can build up on the hair.”

If you haven’t already, take a break from the heat

“Staying away from heat styling gives your hair cuticles a chance to calm down and heal without being blasted daily by heat and styling tools,” shares Andrea Jaclyn, stylist at BOMANE Salon in Los Angeles. Noting that for people with wavy hair, thanks to putting down the blow dryer/hair straightener/ curling iron, you’ll “notice them becoming more uniform and shinier.”

Misseri also mentions that pre-coronavirus quarantine, most people were rushing in the mornings and would, “… turn the heat up on their hot tools and over style the top layer, and front of the hair. Keeping heat styling to twice a week can show vast improvements to the cuticle of the hair. If you choose to heat style, use a heat protectant, like Davines’ MELU Hair Shield.”

But more and more people have swapped not just their beauty routine, but their routines in general. Which made us wonder if there were any negatives to this new normal?

Image courtesy of davines.com and healthcentral.com

Wash your hair a little less often

“My downfall has been washing every day, since I’ve had time for at home workouts,” shares Jaclyn. “You must at least rinse the scalp after excessive sweating as the hormones released can cause thinning. A few days in I realized I had not even let it dry completely before it was wet again. The hair is weak when wet. You want to make sure you’re not constantly keeping it in a hair mask or wet all the time. It can cause breakage or a weakened cuticle.” Jaclyn recommends keeping your scalp and hair clean with Davines’ SOLU shampoo, stating that “it cleans beautifully and leaves hair silky unlike any other “detox, clarifying” shampoo, plus it is color safe.”

But it’s not just people sweating out the cabin fever, Misseri adds that a lot of the population is on a regular basis “over washing” their hair causing the scalp to dry out. “[which] in turn causing overactive oil production in order to create balance. Many people then see “greasy” hair and begin a vicious over washing cycle.” Suggesting that if you’re not already doing it, this is the perfect opportunity to give your hair a break, washing every other day or even every two days.

“… In fact, the less frequently you wash your hair the better, our natural oils from our scalp are full of benefits for our strands,” shares Bianco.   “Products like Saints & Sinners Velvet Divine Moisture Shampoo actually contain anti-friction ingredients so when you do shampoo, there is no fraying of the hair fiber and strands are protected.”

Detox, don’t neglect

“I could see the stress of this situation leaving a lot of people in a “what is the point” kind of mood.” Misseri shares. Which could cause people to not wash their hair enough or leave it unbrushed in a ponytail or top knot. But Misseri warns that “build-up of oil/sebum can cause clogged pores and result in lack of hair growth.”

Also, it’s so important to brush your hair. “Brushing the scalp and hair is a really great way to stimulate hair growth and distribute those necessary oils.” Misseri warns that leaving your hair in a hat or ponytail can also cause damage, “it’s important to have a ponytail holder that isn’t too tight or rough and constantly in the same spot which would cause breakage. Wearing a hat too often will not allow the scalp to breathe.”

And you might want to swap your pillowcase too!  “People are also likely staying in bed longer, and rough cotton pillowcases can dry out the hair and skin and cause hair to tangle and lock.” Misseri suggests a silk pillowcase to keep your tresses in tip top shape.

Image courtesy of K3 Media Collective

Want to speed up the detoxing process? Try a hair mask

To make the most of your beauty revive, Bianco recommends brushing through your hair with a soft bristle brush to “… pull down the oils from your scalp onto the rest of your hair strands.” Also stating how helpful a hair mask can be recommending Saints & Sinners Velvet Divine Hair Masque to help restore hair, which you can even leave on as you sleep.

Misseri uses Davines’ Nourishing Vegetarian Miracle Mask or The Quick Fix Circle.

Recommending that you use a wide tooth comb with the mask on to distribute the mask evenly while detangling. But if you want something you can make at home, Misseri recommends a mixture of egg, avocado, and coconut/olive oil to restore moisture.

Walking out of the quarantine with healthier hair is as easy as washing it less, staying away from unnecessary heat, brushing it out, and avoiding extra breakage. Once you see the results, you might want to give your normal hair routine a “detox” a few times a year!

Spring 2020 Trends (In Spite of COVID-19)

Okay, it may be at least another month or so before circulation among each other is possible. That doesn’t mean that fashion should be forsaken. You’re work from home attire should be kept cute and many any office workers still need to suit up for those Zoom video calls. Consider that there’s a ton of great sales going online right now as stores still try to unload inventory. Some athleisure for your home workouts would be handy right about now. So, what are we wearing this coronavirus season?

Images courtesy of pinterest.com

Crochet

Crochet has transitioned from being a knitting project to a fashion statement for spring 2020. This constricted time could be a time to start a do-it-yourself homemade crochet dress, or you could pick up a little number from Marni that will be good for a virtual party in your living room or a creative agency virtual conference call.

Hot Pants

While hot pants normally wouldn’t be good work from home attire, anything goes when your office is your bedroom. Hot pants will also be great for summer nights and this summer is sure to be a wild one once we’re let outside again.

Tailoring

This trend works for both the gentleman and the ladies. Suits are still needed for when your boss is asking for video meetings, and when you return to the office you want to do it in your Sunday best. Time to suit up.

Warcore

It might be the apocalyptic vibes or just a love for the utilitarian, but warcore is having its moment. Technical fabrics are having a moment, as are utility vests. Warcore will work for the workwear look, or if it eventually dissolves into “Mad Max Fury” outside.

Images courtesy of pinterest.com and No. 21

Chunky Soles

Gentleman, if you have an affinity for chunky sneakers now is your time to shine. The bigger the sole, the bolder the move. Chunky sneakers are great for a park walk or that trip to the grocery store.

Sexy Slips

Slip dresses have never been more functional. Slip dresses are great work-from-home wear and will be great once we start assimilating ourselves back into civilization; especially, nightlife come late spring or early summer. Fashion Reverie recommends you have at least four in various colors.

Underwear as Outerwear

This idea might be a little much for some, but don’t run away before you hear us out. Designers are designing bras that look like tops that will be great for summer, or for loungewear. (And it has been done before. Jean-Paul Gaultier did this almost 30 years ago.) Whether you at the beach or suntanning on your rooftop this summer, this trend will make a statement.

Puffy eyes instantly make you look tired, and yes, older too! The best way to get rid of eye puffiness is by cooling the eye area, I’m sure if you haven’t tried it at home you’ve seen spa ads with women with cucumbers over their eyes. Cucumbers are a great trick as they have anti-inflammatory effects which reduces puffiness and thanks to being made up mostly of water, they cool the temperature around the eyes to reduce swelling. However, if you don’t have any on hand, or are always running out the door, we’ve found another solution.

Not to worry, Fashion Reverie tested out some of the best under-eye concealers and have rounded up the ones that really do the trick whether you need a quick fix or have a little more time to fiddle around.

Tied for second are Milk Makeup Flex Concealer and Benefit Boi-ing Cakeless Concealer. Both do a good job covering dark circles, but are even better for concealing redness, pimples, and sunspots. Milk’s formula is ultra-smooth and lightweight. Benefit’s is more of a full coverage concealer and therefore a slightly thicker formula. but still very light. And Fashion Reverie’s staff loves the adorable pencil eraser packaging!

For extra convenience, Fashion Reverie loves Stila Stay All Day Cover Powder Finish Foundation and Cream Concealer. In the lid is a powerful concealer to hide those under eye circles and then the foundation stick to blend everything together, all in one tiny package.
