Editors’ Pick: Upcycling and Sustainability Are Key Components of LA-Based Streetwear Brand HRTND

Since the end of the pandemic, the world of high-end luxury fashion has seen a change in its approach. Designers turned to materials they already had since getting more became next to impossible due to shipping and packaging restrictions and limitations.

In 2021, the fashion world started to see a rise in upcycling among big-name brands like Viktor & Rolf, Maison Margiela, and Balenciaga. For the longest time, upcycling fashion from reusable materials never got the global appreciation it deserved. That is, until celebrities and influencers began taking to social media platforms to share in what many see as a huge trend pushing the luxury fashion industry in the right direction. What is indicative here is that there is a niche for pieces and materials being repurposed for entirely new pieces that are perfect for any luxury consumer.

Designer Jeff Anderson, based out of Los Angeles, has quickly turned heads with his brand HRTND, which is creating the blueprint for the future of custom-made upcycled high fashion with a whole new outlook on layering. The upcycled custom brand explores different variants of layered suiting by implementing unique fabrics and textures into the design and concept throughout the collection.

The oversized, relaxed, and layered fabrics emphasize the importance of diversity in fashion. Anderson focuses on allowing people to express themselves openly and freely through the looks conveyed in the collection.

This month, Fashion Reverie reflects the intersectionality between music and fashion. Each HRTND garment captures this central theme and is a flashback to vintage eras that are helping influence modern culture through the clothes of the past. HRTND is a brand built for those who are bold when it comes to what they wear and consumers who love making pieces uniquely their own. The pieces are designed and crafted to evolve with what the consumer sees on the streets and buys online. And they’re all made in a sustainably friendly way.

Follow HRTND and shop the collection on Instagram at @hrtnd and www.hrtnd.com (the official website is coming soon).

Six Hot Sunglass Trends for Spring 2023

It’s a good year for sunglasses. Sunglass lovers have a dizzying array of options to mull over to up their fashion game this spring and summer. The sporty styles that Formula 1 racers and champion bikers wear have pushed their way front and center with active men.

For those who have the Y2K nostalgia bug, there are extreme and modernized versions of the shades worn by the gang on the 1989 hit TV show, Saved by the Bell. Designer fashion lovers have stand-out styles that are straight off the Milan and Paris runways that embrace exaggerated oversize shapes and an array of seemingly every color in the rainbow. With these many exciting options, the hardest part will be deciding which style to adopt for the coming months.

Below, Fashion Reverie rounds-up our top nine sunglass trends for spring/summer 2023.

TREND 1: SPORTY:  Sporty is not going away, so start your engines!

Whether you opt for the actual sunglasses that Blenders Eyewear created for the Formula 1 Oracle Red Bull Racing team, (yes, the same ones worn by F1 superstars Max Verstappen and Sergio Perez), or the super trendy Pit Vipers, the brand of choice with the younger biking and skater crowd, you’ll have a bit of a champ’s confident swagger when you slip your shades on.

Blenders Eyewear is a part of the mighty Safilo Group, one of the eyewear industry’s key players. Safilo plays in the more moderate price range and carries brands such as Kate Spade New York, Missoni, Juicy Couture, and Under Armour.  As such, a pair of Blenders run under $100 a pair. The ace F1 team have been spotted wearing Millenia X2, Meister X2, and Exposé models on the track. The Blenders Eyewear x Oracle Red Bull Racing Collection features its PureBlend Lens that echoes the Red Bull’s racing team’s signature colors of their cars and uniforms.

Pit Viper was founded in 2012, but according to www.bicycling.com, the brand has only recently caught the wave of popularity with the male high school and college crowd. The sunglasses are designed for extreme sports and mimic styles that were popular with skiers and cyclists in the eighties and nineties, but with a modern edge. A lively and engaging Instagram account as well as an opening price point of $69 seals the deal.

TREND 2: Y2K NOSTALGIA – Rimless mask styles are back

Dior’s “Diorclub M4U” mask sunglasses in a soft grey and Alexander McQueen’s rose-pink shades with signature silver skull detailing are masks of sorts. These new versions have shaded lenses that act as a soft filter as opposed to the intimidating impenetrable black lenses from past seasons. These glasses are reminiscent of the pastel-colored sunglasses Paris Hilton wore back in the early 2000s, but with larger dimensions.

TREND 3: VINTAGE FUTURISTIC – The fifties cat eye frame in futurist colors

There’s little else that screams “fifties style” more than a pair of cat eye sunglasses, like the ones Audrey Hepburn famously wore for a publicity photo shoot early in her career. She’d doubtless be amazed and delighted by the new options now available seventy years later. Like us, she’d have a hard time choosing from all the colorful options available at Loewe: bright navy, marigold yellow, and shiny violet, to name only a few. For those who aren’t 100% sure they want to go all-in, why not pick up a pair of Wild Fable’s angular cat-eye sunglasses at Target for $12 to try this trend on for size?

TREND 4: EXAGGERATED GEOMETRIC SHAPES – It’s hip to be square

Last year Louis Vuitton’s oversize “millionaire” sunglasses flew off the shelves, despite the $800 and up price tag. For spring, Dior has the “30 Montaigne” (the address of Dior HQ). The gold on gold mirrored giant square lenses manage to have a delicate look, thanks to the barely—there wire rim stems. The glasses are noticeably bling-free save for the large matching gold CD logo on the stems.

TREND 5:  WRAP FRAMES AKA “Wrap arounds”

Think back to your beloved Oakley’s from the 1990s but bigger, much bigger. Then, inject some bright jewel tone color and you have Bottega Venetta’s statement wrap-frame acetate glases with gradient lenses. Another plus is that acetate, a nylon-based plastic, is exceptionally strong, hypoallergenic, and comfortable enough to wear all day long. These showstoppers come in amethyst purple and emerald green and are just the thing for those who want to be noticed.

Images courtesy of the respective brands

TREND 6: ROUND GLASSES – THE CLASSIC CHOICE

And finally, for those who can’t decide which of the above trends to try, designer, Remo Tulliani, offers this advice. “The absolute classic go-to is the one that covers most of your eyes. Usually that shape is round. The idea is to block the most harmful light you can; it’s the reason to wear sunglasses to begin with and usually the failsafe is round. For men, I recommend the “Smooth,” a cross between a round and aviator style. For the women, my choice would be the “Joy,” an exaggerated round shape whereas “Faith” is a more classic round shape.

Every woman needs a little black dress (LBD) in her closet if she’s planning on hitting the town. However, it’s important to remember that not all LBDs are created equal, some can be flimsy, and others are more designed for going to a funeral rather than a friend’s party. The Jordyn Plissed dress by Marissa Wilson sets itself apart. Along with the flattering ruching, the fabric is easily forgiving, and with the option to make irregular sizes made to order this dress has an inclusive air.

Cargo pants have an amazing versatility that allows them to go in and out of style. These Alice and Olivia cargo pants are a perfect example. With multiple pockets, they’ll help you keep everything together but because of the low-rise design and baggy details, they are also perfect for the club scene.

Show me your Mumu X Revolve Taylor Mini Dress, $158

Nasty Gal Mono Mini Dress, $166

Time traveling into a different decade, this dress is the perfect mini dress to give the vintage lover a taste of the twenties. The black mini dress is coated in a swirling art deco-themed pattern complete with both sequins and beads. Editors’ Picks: With Homme+Femme’s Kentucky Derby Collaboration, Diversity Comes to Churchill Downs

With the Kentucky Derby happening this weekend, Drew Evans, founder of the streetwear brand Homme+Femme, has once again teamed up with Churchill Downs—the home of the Kentucky Derby. Homme+Femme has created an influential collection that includes signature varsity jackets, traditional workout blazer cardigans, crewneck sweatshirts, tees, and hats.

Homme+Femme is a streetwear brand doing its part to share not just any story, but the story of African American culture’s victories in the U.S. when it comes to the country’s oldest sporting traditions. Too often, these achievements are forgotten and rarely celebrated in modern America.

The Homme+Femme x Churchill Downs collection is a deeply rooted homage to the legacy of the Kentucky Derby and its prestigious history. This collaboration educates and illuminates the contributions of African Americans and their winning history as horsemen at Churchill Downs. In fact, 15 of the first 28 Kentucky Derbies were won by black jockeys.

The Kentucky Derby collaboration debuted May 1 and is available to shop at Churchill Downs and through HommeFemme.com. Pricing ranges from $65 to $600.

This year’s collection is focused on imbuing the prep school style of Southern culture that fans of the Kentucky Derby can appreciate. As a black-owned brand, Homme+Femme also worked diversity and inclusivity into this wonderful line of clothes and accessories. Most importantly, few brands are chosen to participate, so it’s considered an honor and privilege for Evans and his streetwear brand to be collaborating on a project for this derby for a second time.

Images courtesy of Michele Marie PR

“Being able to share our unknown African American history that our community may not have known about through expression and creativity means the world to me,” Evans said. “So much history from the past goes forgotten and we are still impacting the Derby to this day. Our collaboration brings pride to our heritage, promotes winning, excellence and pushes Homme+Femme further in the prestigious luxury market that we are building towards.”

Unfortunately, we often see some elements in society stoking the flames of hate, instead of leading with love and choosing unity over division. The Homme+Femme x Churchill Downs partnership aims to separate itself from other streetwear collaborations by bringing to light the idea of coming together and breaking down cultural barriers. By intersecting eye-popping pieces with a historic American sport, the brand has succeeded in paying homage not just to the Kentucky Derby, but to Churchill Down’s African American horsemen.

Editors’ Pick: Laffite Automobili Unveil New Hypercars at Miami Grand Prix

Laffite LM1

Laffite Automobili is quickly preparing for a new era in the world of hypercars, a class of superior automobiles that is considered the most high-performance cars in the world. On May 3, the startup company will use the setting of the 2023 Formula 1 Grand Prix in Miami, Florida to unveil five electric hypercars.

There are currently three distinct models available, namely the Atrax, LM1, and Barchetta, while the other two are evolutions. The Atrax model has two different versions, the Atrax Stradale, which is a luxury SUV, and the Atrax Extreme. The Barchetta will also be available in a Barchetta coupe model. These vehicles come equipped with distinct features and specifications, designed to meet the desired preferences of customers. The electric technology behind these newly unveiled hypercars will help revolutionize the entire automotive industry.

Based in Torino, Italy, Laffite Automobili was founded and helmed by Bruno Laffite, the grandson of French Formula 1 driver Jacques Laffite. Jacques competed in F1 from 1974 to 1986 and earned six Grand Prix wins while driving for the Ligier team. Bruno Laffite regularly distinguished himself as a professional driver. Between 1990 and 2000, he ranked among the top ten drivers of his generation and participated in over one hundred races.

In recent years, his company obtained road approval in California for two hypercars inspired by “rally-raid” (stock or modified cars for long-distance, off-road racing) and “sport prototype” (highest-level racing categories) races.

“My dream has always been to see race cars on the road,” Bruno Laffite said. “It has never left me since I was a child and has even increased throughout my life. After almost ten years of research, work and development, I created Laffite Automobili and gathered around me one of the best teams in the world to give substance to my ambition.”

Laffite Barchetta

By working with patience and dedication, Bruno has been able to help solidify what is necessary for a successful brand to grow. Laffite Automobili has advocated strongly for his choices when it comes to creating a bond between luxury and technology. Fabrizio and Giorgetto Giugiaro are the two creatives behind GFG Style, an independent style center that recognized how special this Laffite Automobili hypercar project could be.

With the help of L.M. Gianetti, a renowned Torino-based engineering and automobile manufacturing company, Laffite Automobili had all the key pieces they needed to make history in the world of luxury automobiles.  Founded in 1966, Gianetti has quickly become known as the Piedmont-based company that is built an international reputation by collaborating with the top automotive designers and official racings teams in F1, WRC (World Rally Championship) and GT (Grand Touring) championships.

For starters, the new Italian manufacturer simultaneously created three hypercars; something that had not been done before. Laffite Automobili, GFG Style and L.M. Gianetti worked together to create a stunning class of electric automobiles. Take, for example, the Laffite LM1. Sure, it comes with an astonishing $2.4 million-dollar price tag, but for that you get a car that goes from 0 to 62 mph in less than two seconds (1.98 seconds to be exact). It has a maximum speed of 217 mph, and the car is fully electric. On a single charge, this hypercar can explore the roadways for 255 miles. And when it is time to charge, you need to only set aside 20 minutes to fully reboot your battery.

Images courtesy of Laffite Automobili

Each Laffite Automobili model features the best in aesthetics, elegance, and excellence. Not only that, their groundbreaking technology specifications and breathtaking luxury design makes each vehicle accessible to all types of drivers. Exceptional style, performance, and fine-tuned handling that were previously only accessible on the raceway are now available in a street-legal package that looks like visual artistry.

More information on all the models, go to www.laffite.com.

Beauty Alert: Avoid these Wedding Day Beauty Mistakes

Be not only the most stunning, but the most prepared bride by avoiding these common wedding day beauty faux pas.  Fashion Reverie spoke with expert makeup artists Tory Kuivanen and Janae Niles, with MAC and pro artists Rhona Samuels and Rafael German, with Valentino Beauty on all the do’s and don’ts of getting glam for your wedding day.

From what products to keep around for touchups, to what not to do the day of the ceremony, these tips will ensure you look amazing and can spend more time enjoying your wedding with your guests.

Images courtesy of Anna Shvets

Do Focus on Skincare

“On your wedding day, what you really don’t want to see is makeup on the skin. It’s all about being romantic. If you’re drawn to the skin because there’s so much makeup, it takes away from the beauty of the day,” Samuels shares. “Which is why it’s important to prep the skin properly with good skincare … making sure [the products are] absorbed into the skin nicely. It’s like whoever is doing your makeup [should be] pretty much giving you a facial with the skincare.”

Don’t Forget to think of the Weather

Different seasons or climates make a big difference to your skin and even subtle changes to the conditions, temperatures and humidity, can make or break your look. “I highly recommend a setting spray so that the makeup will last all day,” Samuels explains. Ideal for all brides running around and dancing the night away, but a setting spray is even more important in warmer temperatures.

German shares a few tips while explains, “I like to use matte for the summer but for winter weddings, I like to use a base oil. For the summer weddings, I like to use the Armani face balm, because when I put it on, it makes your skin dewy and radiant. When you put on the makeup [on top] it’s just more natural and more youthful.”

Do Practice Self Care

Take care of your skin, drink enough water, and get some sleep the night before.  Weddings can be stressful, but you don’t want that to show on your face.

“Rest is the number one thing to keep in mind.  Makeup is meant to enhance you … but it won’t cover if your eyes are puffy,” explains Niles who recommends a whole face mask to hydrate, refresh and plump the skin. Kuivanen also recommends applying eye patches the night before or the morning of.

Don’t Experiment with New Products

Your wedding day isn’t the day to try out anything new.  “Don’t use any new products.  No new skincare, no new makeup,” explains Niles, as It could cause breakouts or irritation. Not only should you try out any products way ahead of time, but you should also take some photos to be sure you love the look in the camera and not just in the mirror.

Images courtesy of Anna Shuraeva and Cottonbro Studio

Do Keep the Camera in Mind

“Honestly, do your makeup for the camera because anytime a professional photographer is taking your picture, the makeup you have on kind of disappears,” Kuivanen explains.

“Go a little more than you think you need; most makeup artists know to do this already.”

Images courtsy of Valeria Boltneva and Antonio Guerra

Don’t Forget Touch Ups

Kuivanen recommends keeping some lipstick or lip gloss on you as well as keeping some powder on hand for quick touchups. You don’t need much. But having these two or three beauty staples on hand will allow you to look your best all night long.

 Do Trust Your Makeup Artist

“Always trust your gut,” Samuels advises.  “You find a good artist then you feel like that is the artist for you. Then trust the artist. It’s your vision, but they will bring your vision to life.”

Janine Silver
