Fashion Reverie’s Spring 2021 Activewear and Exercise Roundup

It’s been a full year since the pandemic started. Everyone told themselves “I’m going to get ripped! I have so much free time to exercise! “ And then we sat on our couches eating 5 lb bags of chips delivered by Amazon and binged Brooklyn 99 over and over and over… and wound-up packing on more than a few pandemic pounds.

Well, it’s time to refresh those workout wardrobes and get to stepping! After a year indoors are you looking to step out in something new? Aren’t you lucky to have Fashion Reverie in your life! We’ve found some of the best independent and underrated brands for athleisure wear on the market.

Imbōdhi

Imbōdhi clothing uses plant-based fabrics that require no pesticides and only a fraction of the land that cotton requires. Eucalyptus trees are sustainably harvested to make the silky, fine-knit Lenzing MicroModal fabric that is featured in their collection. And what’s in that collection? Their ridiculously chic easy-to-wear super popular bodysuits, that’s what. Fully reversible and amazingly comfortable, you’ll never want to wear anything but your body suit to work out in again.

Tully Lou

Looking for super chic athleisure wear that will fit in at a house party as easily as it does at a gym?  Tully Lou is known for its standout pieces that effortlessly merge extremely high-quality performance activewear with fashion-forward streetwear. With bold colors and eye-catching patterns, you’ll be eager to show these pieces off. Oh, and a portion of all sales goes toward charitable giving and Tully Lou will let you direct where your donations will go.

No Ka ‘Oi

No Ka ‘OI takes its name from the Hawaiian word for excellent and is produced with the best in Italian design know-how. Creative Director Simona Finelli fuses fashion, contemporary art, and wellness into an aesthetic defined by vibrant colors and an exacting approach to fit and silhouettes. These pieces are truly small works of art that you’ll be excited to wear again and again.

Katie K

This activewear line focuses on practical issues (comfort, moisture wicking and POCKETS!!) with luxury fabrics and punches of fun color! Going up to size 3X. What Katie K really focuses on is fit.

After learning that most activewear lines simply expand smaller sizes, Katie K was determined to create a fit for plus-sized wear. This brand doesn’t just make a small thing into a larger thing. Rather, they’ve responded to the real curves and shapes that make up a woman’s body, ensuring all sizes have superior fit and comfort.

The Year of Ours

This female-led, LA-based company is turning quite a few heads with their high-quality fabrics and unique fashionable touches. As the US reaches herd immunity, (vaccines are the best, aren’t they?) many women are headed back to their fast-paced lives that might not leave time for a costume change. Year of Ours responded with outfits that work as much for yoga as they do for brunch. Since their introduction, Year of Ours now carries extended sizing—ranging from XXS to 2X—and introduced brand new cuts, color palettes, and fabric formulas intended to fit an even wider range of lifestyles.

Lola Getts

With a name taken from the classic Broadway Song “Whatever Lola wants” from “Damn Yankees,” this company was launched to be all about creating comfortable functional high- quality workout wear for plus-sized women.  It has now expanded to sizes from XS to 4X. Since most of the brand’s items (which include leggings, tops, and jackets) are created in neutral colors, it’s easy to mix and match without thinking twice about your overall look.

Online Exercise Programs

Are you ready to put that activewear to good use? Fashion Reverie has found two programs we are fond of, and you can try them both out for free before committing to a plan!

Team Body Project

After over a year in quarantine, some of us haven’t hit a gym since March of 2020. Others haven’t worked out regularly in decades. But the exercise industry isn’t geared toward those people, is it? Check out Team Body Project at their website or on youtube.  The program is geared toward people who are out of shape with advice on how to get and stay active. Team Leaders will say things like, “If your back starts to hurt, you can just march in place, the most important part is that you keep moving,” to keep you motivated without talking down to you. You can access online support groups and meal programs for a small fee, or simply watch the videos for free on youtube.

Fitness Marshall

Are motivation and boredom a problem for you? Look no further than workout videos created by Caleb Marshall. He choreographs fun workouts to the latest pop hits with beats you dance to. His fun and exuberance are truly infectious. He works out with two other people each demonstrating different levels of the workout. You can even sign up for reasonably priced access to longer videos. One word of warning, you might want to watch a video before you try to exercise to it. Marshall is a very skilled dancer so some of his moves may be a bit complicated.

Editors’ Pick: Where the Mind Goes, the Feet Follow: Surrealist Shoe Roundup

According to James Voorhies of The Metropolitan Museum of Art, the surrealist movement was inspired by “Freudian methods of free association, and poetry and prose drew upon the private world of the mind, traditionally restricted by reason and societal limitations, to produce surprising, unexpected imagery. The cerebral and irrational tenets of Surrealism find their ancestry in the clever and whimsical disregard for tradition fostered by Dadaism a decade earlier.”

Surrealism essentially exists as an evasion from reality, where its appeal is the strongest in times of hardship. We have seen surrealist influences on the fashion industry for decades; however, the most prominent is early surrealist artist’s continued influence on the works of Schiaparelli. The Victoria and Albert Museum in their Schiaparelli and Surrealism exhibit wrote, “Schiaparelli was drawn to the imaginative freedom in the work of the Surrealist artists whom she befriended on the Paris social scene, leading to numerous collaborative designs. Surrealism’s fixation with the corporeal and depictions of the body created natural tangents with the world of fashion.” Surrealist jewelry and fashion pieces are still prominent in every Schiaparelli collection, and Vogue most recently noted how Schiaparelli’s collections relate to our current global status in an article entitled “Jewellery’s New Surreal Appeal Echoes the Strangeness of Our Times.” Surrealism seems to have risen again in the fashion industry reflecting a desire to break away from reality and enter an avante-garde world where figures and shapes are not what they seem.

Like Salvador Dali’s slowly melting clock, the surreal appeal has dripped down from jewelry to footwear. The footwear market seems to be the last segment in the fashion industry to experience the surrealist influence trend since shoes are strongly associated with functionality, so it requires the mind of an innovator to meld the realities of functionality with the fashionable reverie of the surrealist movement. At Fashion Reverie, fanciful thinking is highly encouraged, so here is a roundup of the top 10 surrealist shoes you should keep your gold encrusted Schiaparelli eye on!

Full Surreal Appeal for those in a Permanent Reverie

Ganor Dominic Tyche Contour White $449.99

These outrageously extravagant slides are aptly named after Tyche, the Greek goddess of fortune and prosperity. The jewel encrusted feather lashed eye detail is cleverly a removable brooch as well, giving these surrealist treasures versatility, as well as beauty.  These surreal art pieces are an incredible statement to accent any ensemble. Be prepared to be stopped in your tracks for compliments!

Ganor Dominic Art Boots Zelos $702

Salvador Dali, among many other surrealist artists, often depicted morphed faces in his work—there is nothing more surrealist than this feature. Face the day with joy and in style with these Zelos Art Boots in white. The perforated leather provides a beautiful breezy quality, making these boots perfect for spring and summer. The brand’s signature embossed face on the tongue adds just the whimsy needed to bring a smile to your face.

DATT Sculpture Shoes $2000

Turn fashion on its crystal heel with these sculpture shoes wrought out of pure silver and copper. Whether you just want to dip your toes in the surrealistic waters or be full on avant-garde, slipping into these heeled sandals is a fashion-forward step. Also, you have the bonus of being able to skip the pedicure!

Innovations from the Minds of Surrealist Thinkers

H&M Sandals $129

Surreal mentality inspires innovation as seen in these sustainable picks. These Neon Green Sandals from H&M in vegan faux leather made from cactus leaves (yes, cactus leaves!) are not only inspired by surrealism in their innovation and outside the box mentality, but they are also sustainable, as proudly stated on the back and heel of the shoe. The green is a refreshing homage to the burst of life in spring, and the padded crossover straps add a playful dimension. So, add a little sustainable spring to your surreal step in these innovative sandals.

Ugo Paulon Repurposed Heels $TBD, shop coming soon!

Protect society from waste while you protect your feet with these sumptuously comfortable repurposed heels from Ugo Paulon. Each shoe is made from second-hand materials such as vintage shoes and clothes, as well as deadstock fabrics. The materials might be second hand, but the construction and style are first rate!

Tega Akinola Cable Court Mules $324

Sustainability and style are tied together in these Cable Court Mules, smartly crafted from discarded electrical cables held in place by plastic cable ties. These mules are an elegant and fun addition to any environmentally conscious wardrobe.

Surrealist Meets Traditional: a Classic With an Unexpected Twist

H&M x Simone Rocha Pointed Flats $249

Let your fancy take flight in these airy red pointed flats by H&M in collaboration with Simone Rocha. The classic red flat is given a surreal lift with the addition of ethereal feathers evoking images of lightness and luxury. Add a pop of imagination to a casual look, or embellish a more elegant style. You cannot misstep in these.

Dora Teymur Heart Cut Out Pump $462

It may be cliché but who would not love these Heart Cut Out Pumps by Dora Teymur from the bottom of their square toes to the tips of their covered cone heels? Why wear your heart on your sleeve, when you can show it off on these charmingly designed leather shoes?

Charlotte Stone Blanche Puzzle Piece Pump $248

Much of the surrealist appeal is in hidden figures and treasures when you were expecting to find something ordinary. As Frida Kahlo once said, “Surrealism is the magical surprise of finding a lion in a wardrobe, where you were ‘sure’ of finding shirts.” For this particular pump, the Charlotte Stone website describes it as a shoe that “looks like your everyday pump, but this fancy lady has a secret, and it’s a 2.5″ electroplated puzzle piece heel.” This shoe will help any outfit just fall into place.

Marni Women’s Black Sandals $475

Shearling is rarely synonymous with summer, but in a surrealistic world, they fit right in. Slingbacks are a classic piece; however, the textured fabric adds an element of surprise and whimsy. Dream of an entire world of soft shearling and step out of your reverie with the clouds of your imagination on your feet.

Editors’ Picks: 2021 Mother’s Day Gifts

It’s another Mother’s Day! Of course, we are still dealing with the pandemic, so we’re all going to have to get creative. People over 65 are especially vulnerable, but the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) is now saying if everyone involved is vaccinated you can exchange mask-less hugs and have a fun day together. Fashion Reverie has curated a list of great Mother’s Day gifts to bring smiles.  Enjoy the day and stay safe.

BlueQ

Does your mother tell you she doesn’t want you spending money on junk she’ll never use? Okay fine. There’s a solution. Look no further than BlueQ. They carry a plethora of unique, quirky yet extremely practical items like oven mitts, toothbrushes, socks, and more. Often, they have funny phrases and sometimes the words are a little blue so adjust accordingly for your mother’s tastes. Another great thing? A portion of all sales goes to Doctor without Borders.

Birth Month Flower Kit

So many people love to grow flowers. People talk about how gardening is an incredibly relaxing and calming hobby. Does your mother have a green thumb? She will love this item from Uncommon Goods. You’ve heard of birthstones but did you know each month has an associated flower? You can select your mother’s birth flower and give her this kit. It will have everything she’ll need to grow her own colorful flowers that will remind her of your generosity every time she sees them bloom.

Gobble Meal Kits

If you are a certain age, you remember June Cleaver of “Leave It to Beaver” fame joyfully cooking enormous breakfasts and five-course dinners. Making us believe that all moms love to cook,  except some moms don’t like cooking, some aren’t very good at it, and some moms just plain don’t want to! Once their kids are grown, some moms don’t want to spend an hour making dinner every night.

So why does Fashion Reverie recommend Gobble Meal Kits? Not only do Gobble meals feature wonderfully flavorful dinners with lots of different optional add ins, with most of the prep taken care of before shipment, meals usually take only 20 minutes to prepare.

Claus Porto Soaps Gift Box from Net-a-Porter

One of the best gifts is the one that provides everyday luxury from practical items.  One great extravagance is a really fantastic bar of soap. It’s just a simple daily indulgence that can really lift your spirits. This gift box from Claus Porto features eight  divine smelling soaps in such beautiful packaging your mom won’t be able to throw it away.

The soaps are made in the same Portuguese factory that was built when the company started in 1887, and contain moisturizing pistachio oils for a creamy rich lather. Each of the eight bars in this set is individually wrapped in beautifully illustrated paper pulled from the brand’s archives and sealed with a wax stamp.

Firstleaf Wine Club

Does your mother love nothing more than sipping a delicious wine? If so, she’ll love Firstleaf wine club. This subscription service will help your mother discover fantastic new vinos to add to her collection. She will start with a quiz to help her find personal wine preferences. Once your mom receives her bottle, she can rate it to help her find another new favorite (there are thousands of bottles to choose from.) And what if she hates the wine she’s ordered? Customer service will find her a replacement bottle!

Personalized Hand-Written Letter Blanket

Does your mother lament that no one hand writes letters anymore? Does she get chilly easily?  Bring both of those worlds together with a personalized letter blanket from Diane Scaman from Uncommon Goods. Her loose-leaf-paper-styled, 100% cotton blankets create a cozy customizable medium for your messages of love. Your mother will be reminded of your warming words every time her toes get cold.

Clevery Aromatherapy Shower Steamers

We all had a hearty laugh in the 1980’s when we saw the Life Alert commercial where an elderly woman lays on the floor of her bathroom crying “I’ve fallen and I can’t get up!” Sadly, this is a real situation that can cause serious injury. Many older people won’t take baths because crawling in and out of tubs is just too dangerous. While bath bombs are a traditional Mother’s Day item, why not think outside the tub? Placing the heavenly scented Clevery Aromatherapy Shower Steamers in a corner of a shower creates divine aromas that turn any bathroom into the ultimate spa experience.

Image courtesy of The Giving Keys

Giving Keys Jewelry

Jewelry is many people’s go-to Mother’s Day gift, but would you consider giving your mother a more unique and meaningful jewelry experience? Giving Keys Jewelry are beautiful pieces engraved with a single word (choose from selected words or pick a custom word) that means something important to your mother. After one year Giving Keys encourages owners to pay it forward by passing the jewelry onto another person. Even if your mother decides to keep the piece, she’ll still be contributing. Giving Keys teaches important life and job skills to people transiting out of homelessness.

World Wildlife Federation Animal Adoptions

Did you know you could adopt a tiger as a gift for your mom? Don’t worry you won’t end up in “Tiger King” part 2. World Wildlife Federation sells symbolic adoptions so your mother (who has already told you multiple times she doesn’t need more stuff!) can help an endangered animal preserve their habit and increase their numbers.

Spring 2021 Trend Styleout

It appears that parts of the world are slowly opening and adjusting to their new normal. People are dining out, shopping, and traveling, all in hopes that we are rounding the corner on the COVID-19 pandemic. As we start to socialize again, our minds are turning toward that looming question, what am I going to wear?

We missed most of our social opportunities for 2020, so a lot of us are planning to double up in 2021. Twice as much traveling, twice as much time with family and friends, and twice as many lewks to be seen in. There are more than 25 projected fashion trends for spring 2021, so it may be a little tricky to stay on top of things this season, but Fashion Reverie has found a way to do it! We’ve taken the twelve best trends for spring 2021, broke them down into duos, and created an easy style out for each pair.

This guide will help you tackle the trends, get your money’s worth from your closet, and stay on your friends’ best dressed list.

Polo Ralph Lauren maxi dress: $243
Jonathan Simkhai cropped cardigan: $385
Gas Bijoux earrings: $109
Aurelie Bidermann bracelet: $252
Paris Texas shoes: $297
MLouye bag: $381

Maxi Dresses & Stripes

Maxi dresses are a springtime staple. They are an unceremonious way of sloughing off the winter layers, and allowing your wardrobe to give way to lighter, freer fabrics. They come in a variety of colors, prints, and patterns, but stripes are what spring 2021 is calling for. This season, don’t limit stripes to just your attire. Add striped elements to all parts of your outfit including your jewelry and bags … but don’t overdo it.

Heron Preston x Calvin Klein bra: $52
Liviana Conti wide leg pants: $167
Alo bomber jacket: $119
Maria Black earrings: $53
Nialaya Jewelry necklace: $99
Dee Ocleppo purse: $231
Patrizia Pepe heels: $201

Wide Leg Pants & Bralettes

This is like a game of peek-a-boo. Bralettes as shirts are a warm weather aesthetic. It shows how smoking hot your body is, but also keeps you cooler when the temps are too turned up. Wide leg pants also let air circulate and help you cool down quicker than tight, form-fitting clothes. Put it all together with a pair of statement heels, and you have a funky, artsy outfit that could have Rihanna taking notes.

Vanessa Scott sheer blouse: $64
Hanro bra: $59
Dry Lake sequin pants: $114
A.W.A.K.E Mode bag: $257
Estella Bartlett bracelet $38
8 By Yoox heels: $110

Sheer & Sequins

In another game of hide and seek, opt for the two trends of sheer and sequins. The sparkle will certainly catch their eye, but the transparency will make them do a double take. Sequined clothes can be fun and playful or chic and sophisticated, so try both ends of the spectrum. Sheer clothes are sexy, but be sure to wear under garments that match either your flesh or the outer garment. You don’t necessarily want to show all your goods, but you want to keep them guessing.

Alice + Olivia top: $141
LHD shorts: $188
Borsalino hat: $184
Missoni earrings: $111
Roger Vivier fringe bag: $378
Birkenstock shoes: $301

Folks-Inspired and Fringe Bags

Not everyone is ready to jump back into futuristic and fashion-forward attire. Some people want to continue taking life slow and easy. During this pandemic, a lot of us took stock of our place in the world. We learned more about various cultures around the globe, and we revisited our own heritages. There’s a resurging fondness for where we come from, and that appreciation also trickles down to fashion. There’s an uptick in interest in responsibly sourced clothing, and a lot of that clothing comes from small, local manufacturers whose design aesthetic comes from their indigenous culture. It’s always good to celebrate and support different cultures, but just make sure it is an appreciation, not an appropriation.

Alexis top: $253
Sportmax skirt: $375
Alison Lou earrings: $145
Ports 1961 ring: $182
Furla purse: $430
Sandro Paris sneakers: $245

Monochromatic & Pastels

What, on the surface, seems like the easiest trend can actually be one of the most difficult to execute. Monochromatic outfits look beautiful when well done, but they can look like a tragedy if done poorly. Luckily, pastels make it easier. The soft colors simplify the blending of hues, thereby allowing you a better chance of pulling off the monochromatic look. It is incredibly difficult to find an outfit where everything matches perfectly—you must take into consideration color, material, and sheen. But when you do find that holy grail of garb, it’s like a chef’s kiss. Pastels are an easy cheat code. Go for it!

Vivienne Westwood Anglomania shirt: $181
DSquared2 shorts: $249
Kasun London necklace: $248
Bering watch: $215
See by Chloe purse: $423
Amina Muaddi boots: $1,775
MM6 Maison Margiela bracelet (used as an ankle bracelet over the boots) $114

Screen Prints and White Thigh-High Boots

What used to be called ghetto fabulous would now be considered urban chic. The mix of downtown elements, like graphic tees and denim, with uptown elements, like accents of precious metals, is the beautiful melding of two worlds. When you add short shorts and tall boots into the equation, the result is a sexy outfit worth its weight in gold. Thigh high boots are a serious matter, and when they are all white, they are making a bold statement. That’s also what screen-printed shirts do. So, if you’re going to wear them, especially together, you might as well give the people something to talk about.

The entire world was shocked when we learned the truth. No, Meghan Markle didn’t make Kate, Duchess of Cambridge, cry while prepping for her wedding; it was the other way around! But every bride knows that even the most modest wedding can reach that point. Prepping for the big day is so stressful, fraught with emotions and family drama that, at some point, tears will be spilled. Some brides have reported crying on their wedding day because they are so happy that the planning is over. Fashion Reverie feels your pain and has decided to compile a list of products that can help alleviate your problems. It’s your special day! Let’s try to help things go as smoothly as possible.

Solemates

Outdoor weddings are such a delight. Fresh air, sunshine, and cool breezes are relaxing and fun. But walking on grass and dirt in heels? It can result in falls, damaged shoes or broken heels. Or worst-case scenario: the faceplant. A broken nose or tooth is the last thing anyone wants. Now you can use a device described by none other than Oprah as “pure genius.” Solemates heel protectors slip onto the tip of your heels and will keep heels from sinking into grass and provide a stable walking for dirt or uneven surfaces.

Icy Bag

Icy Bag was created by a desperate bride! The inventor was getting married and was about to put her makeup on when she discovered, her makeup bag had been forgotten in her car. It was summer and by the time it was retrieved, the hot sun had liquified most of her items. They were ruined. That led her to invent Icy Bag.

It is a bag with a removable gel sleeve that can be frozen to keep items cold. Perfect for summer weddings. And later it can be used to keep drinks, lunches, medications, or anything you want cool and fresh!

Urban Decay All Nighter Setting Spray
Protecting your hair from extreme humidity doesn’t protect your face from that same humidity and the heat that drives it.  Every woman has gone out for a summer evening only to have her makeup melt into her shoes before the night has barely begun. Urban Decay All Nighter Setting Spray is the original setting spray to keep your makeup from budging for a solid 16 hours. This weightless vegan mist actually lowers the temperature of your makeup—from foundation and concealer to eyeshadow and blush—to lock it in place. No touch-ups needed. Seriously.

Still Standing Comfort Foot Spray

Okay, high heels may look great, but they don’t feel very good. Of course, you want to look elegant and tall for pictures, but after a few hours, your dogs will be barking. Fashion Reverie has a better idea—try Still Standing Comfort Foot Spray. This eco-friendly spray can fend off pain for up to 6 hours. It won’t numb your feet. Instead, it prevents the swelling, redness, and discomfort that heels of any size can cause.

Rae Wellness Energy Capsules

Having the opposite problem? With a million things needing to get done, you might feel yourself getting run down, but chugging a Red bull might not be the greatest idea. Their formula features green tea and B12 to give you a bit of energy boost without the crash.

And here are a few things you’ll also want to have on hand for your special day:

Try to have fun and remember the day after the wedding will be the first day of the rest of your life.
