The 2023 American Apparel & Footwear Association Awards: Embracing Diversity and Inclusion

NEW YORK, NEW YORK – APRIL 25: Guests attend the 2023 AAFA American Image Awards at The Plaza Hotel on April 25, 2023 in New York City. (Photo by Slaven Vlasic/Getty Images for AAFA American Image Awards)

We all love awards shows, well, some of us do. And when it comes to fashion awards ceremonies, most of us are only familiar with the CFDA Fashion Awards, Fashion Group International Awards or the International Woolmark Awards. But there are others.

At New York City’s Plaza Hotel, the American Apparel & Footwear Association (AAFA) hosted the 2023 AAFA American Image Awards. This is the seventh year that the AAFA has partnered with the Council of Fashion Designers of America (CFDA) Foundation as its beneficiary with the proceeds funding the future of the industry and the development of invaluable philanthropic programs.

“The individuals and entities we are honoring this year for 2023 are initiators, leaders, and progress drivers,” said AAFA President and CEO Steve Lamar. “The power of the U.S. fashion industry is anchored in its global value chains and the billions of people around the world they employ and serve. This annual event demonstrates our evolution as an industry and celebrates these outstanding individuals and companies for their leadership, excellence, and noteworthy achievements in all sectors of the apparel and footwear industry.”

“Each of tonight’s honorees are at the forefront of our changing industry, and they are building communities that will shape and define the future of American fashion,” said Steven Kolb, CEO of the CFDA. “We are very proud and thankful of our partnership with the AAFA and the positive impact it has had.”

For 2023, the AAFA has made significant inroads in supporting and celebrating the work and contributions of people of color in the fashion and retail apparel industries. This was made evident by honoring at this years’ awards ceremony Willy Chavarria, creative director of his eponymous brand and creative director of Calvin Klein menswear, Brandice Daniels, CEO of Harlem’s Fashion Row, and Director General of the World Trade Organization, Dr. Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala.

Willy Chavarria accepted the Isabel and Ruben Toledo statuette; Brandice Daniels accepted the Fashion Maverick honor on behalf of Harlem’s Fashion Row; Dr. Uzodinma Iweala accepted the Global Vanguard for his mother Dr. Ngozi Okonio-Iweala, and New Balance received the Company of the Year award. The entire awards ceremony was hosted by Segun Oduolowu.

As honoree Brandice Daniels so elegantly put, “Fashion can be an uphill journey, and times will get hard, but you have to stay in the race.” All of these honorees have stayed in the race and persevered with elegance, grace and tenacity.

Skinny Mixes: Once Again, Necessity Is the Mother of Invention

Spring is here!! So, whether you are prepping your body for those short shorts or girls’ night out or attempting to slim down for romps on the beach, you don’t have much time left to get that bod in spring/summer 2023 shape.

No need to fret!! Fashion Reverie has the perfect low-calorie, zero sugar product to help you shed those winter pounds. And it comes in a variety of flavors with no bitter aftertaste.

Who says those cocktails around the pool must contain so many calories? They don’t!! You can get your drink on or have those lattes that we love without worrying about your A1C levels going sky high or putting on extra pounds.

Skinny Mixes to the rescue!! And rescue it is!!

Finding a niche in the market is just what Skinny Mixes’ Jordan Engelhardt did during the Great Recession of 2009. And a decade later her low-calorie, zero sugar mixes are flying off the shelves.

Jordan Engelhardt took time out of her busy schedule to speak to Fashion Reverie about her product, her niche in the market, and why Skinny Mixes is the perfect low-calorie, zero sugar product to help you slim down for spring/summer 2023. And have some fun while doing it!!

Fashion Reverie: You are a brave lady. In 2009 you left your job in real estate and launched Skinny Mixes out of your mother’s kitchen. Could you talk about that?

Jordan Engelhardt: My mom and I do like a cocktail from time to time. I had thought about creating a margarita mix without all the sugar and calories in the mixes I had previously used. And I thought about why a mixer product that was low calorie didn’t exist. I started doing research and found that there was not a low-calorie or zero calorie cocktail mix on the market at that time.

I tried to create something that was zero sugar or low calorie on my own. So, that is how the idea started.

It was also a pivotal time in my life. I produced this idea during the financial crisis of 2009. I was a real estate appraiser, and the bottom was falling out of that market. So, the timing was key.

FR: So, tell us more about Skinny Mixes.

Jordan Engelhardt: Skinny Mixes is a line of low-calorie cocktail mixes, coffee syrups, low-calorie enhancers for desserts, and water enhancers. It is all about indulging without the guilt of calories and a lot of sugar.

Images courtesy of Skinny Mixes

FR: Your product has zero calories and natural flavors and colors. Could you talk more about that?

Jordan Engelhardt: Our newest launch in the natural flavors line. The process of developing a natural flavors line had developed over time as consumers wanted natural flavors. So, it was a simple conclusion that we needed to add this dimension to our product line. We worked with a lab to get the formulations right and develop a product that is quite good.

FR: How long did it take you to find natural flavors that really worked?

Jordan Engelhardt: Over time we have added more flavors. Every year we produce forty new launches which includes new flavors. The process from start to finish takes anywhere from three to six months. Which is faster than a lot of similar companies.

FR: You have recently added new flavors French Vanilla, Caramel, Pumpkin Spice, and Peppermint Mocha. Could you talk about these new additions?

Jordan Engelhardt: We have had a lot of success with our natural sweetener line. We are now in Target and Meijer. And the product is selling well so naturally we wanted to expand the line to our new four flavors that consumers really wanted. We have a great relationship with our customers and communicate with them regularly. And these are the flavors they told us that they wanted. We pivoted and did it.

We have eight natural flavors combined with our eighty other products. And we are continuing to add more products.

FR: Do the French Vanilla, Caramel, Pumpkin Spice and Peppermint Mocha only work as coffee enhancers?

Jordan Engelhardt: They do work well as coffee enhancers, but people also use them to sweeten desserts and baked goods. You can add Pumpkin Spice to cupcakes, pies, and a variety of baked goods.

FR: Who is your customer?

Jordan Engelhardt: Our customer has broadened and continues to broaden. Our core consumer is anyone from 18 years of age to 55 years of age, and mostly female.

FR:  What are your price points?

Jordan Engelhardt: We are an inexpensive product, anywhere from $7.99 to $12.99. We do offer bundles and sales on our site from time to time.

FR: Is this a growing market where consumers are looking to add low-calorie sweeteners and/or zero sugar products to their food intake? Could you speak to that?

Jordan Engelhardt: Between customers wanting to be healthier to not wanting to add lots of sugar to millennials looking to customize their drinks, there is a trend to looking beyond Starbucks and other similar retailers for customized coffee drinks. By investing in coffee machines, consumers realized that they could make their own custom drinks and Skinny Mixes is perfect for that consumer.

And as many people are working from home and have coffee machines, why spend all a lot of money at Starbucks when you can make the same product at home while you are working and same some bucks at the same time. Skinny Mixes just blends into this new dynamic.

FR: Are you looking to expand to other products?

Jordan Engelhardt: We are always expanding and innovating, looking to produce something new for our consumers. There are new and exciting things in the pipeline.

FR: New York Bridal Week finished a week ago, why would your product be great for a bridal party or the bridal reception party?

Jordan Engelhardt: Skinny Mixes lends itself well to some beautiful low-calorie and zero sugar cocktails at bridal parties. Our product is fantastic for that bride who is trying to slim down a couple of months before her wedding and works well for those bridal guests who don’t want to overindulge in sugary cocktails at the reception.

Bridal Sketches from New York Bridal Week Spring 2024

Everybody loves a sneak peek, well most of us do. And Fashion Reverie is no exception. For us that means a preliminary glance into what bridal designers are designing for the spring 2024 bridal season at New York Bridal Week.

Though not as many designers create bridal sketches as was once the norm decades ago. Some bridal designers still rely on this age-old craft. And Fashion Reverie is so thankful that some of the brilliant designers who present their new bridal collections at New York Bridal still possess that skill set which manifest in beautiful sketches.

Here are just a few, so enjoy!!

Get Your Spring 2023 Looks on with Barbie and Ken-Inspired Looks

Last summer we saw the start of Barbie-core, with stills released from Greta Gerwig’s live-action film based on the well-known doll. Suddenly, Barbie didn’t just infiltrate the minds of young kids. Now adults had permission to obsess over a toy–and its fashion.

So, instead of a 2023 hot girl summer, we had a Barbie-girl summer. Pink clothes became everything. Malibu vacations were the only idea. And a dream closet? That had to be on everyone’s mind once again.

After dying down for winter, Fashion Reverie is pleased to announce that Barbie’s fashion seems to be making a comeback. The trailer for the movie dropped on April 4th, spiraling the internet and fashion world into a pink-filled dream. According to WeThrift, searches on Google for Barbie-core increased by 7900%. On TikTok, #barbiecore had 275.1 million views as this is being written. That’s proof enough that for the internet Barbie-based fashion is here to stay.

That said, even with the amazing shot of Margot Robbie’s feet staying in Barbie’s position after removing her heels, it’s important to realize that no real person can become a Barbie … but if you’re interested in stealing some of her styles, then there’s a list of Barbie and Ken inspired looks below!

Barbie

Asos ‘Lost in Gingham’ set, $100

When it comes to the looks everyone was excited about in the recent trailer, Barbie’s pink gingham outfit immediately drew excitement (along with the fact the Ken dolls were threatening to ‘beach’ each other off). This outfit was feminine and flirty, making it perfect for a Barbie Girl. Asos’ similar set gives a similar look, including the flirtatious ruffles we saw on Margot Robbie in the film.

Kasper Snap Detail Sheath dress, $89

This dress is perfect for an office meeting, it sits in between the fashion in many Barbie films with a dash of “Legally Blonde.”  Simplistic and classic in design, this Kasper dress is the ultimate sheath. Whether pairing it with a blazer and pumps or just wearing it by itself for a date night, you’re sure to make a statement. The snap closure and slight slit allow you to tease just the right amount of skin without going overboard.

Resa Jojo Mini in Barcelona, $148

This cut-out dress is comfortable, relaxing, and stylish. Something akin to Barbie beachwear, the loose satin-like fabric makes the dress an easy-to-wear summer option. Lightweight and playful, this Resa Dress is pink and white in an animal print—adding another element of design that makes it chic.

Roseark pink enamel hoops, $500

There is no bigger ongoing trend in the jewelry industry than hoop earrings. A bit of a splurge, these Roseark hoops are a warm hot pink and embedded with crystals. Not only great for a Barbie girl but also for someone who prefers gold jewelry. The pink enamel of the chunky earrings only allows small amounts of the gold to peek out.

Yvolution Pretty Fly Roller Skates, $59.99

While no one quite knows why there is such an obsession in this Barbie film with roller skating, that seems to be a main theme throughout the trailer and stills that have been released. Not only partially retro but also a great workout, maybe this love of roller rinks makes sense? Whatever the case, if you’re interested in working out like Barbie then a pair of cute roller skates is the way to bypass a gym membership in Malibu. These Yvolution pink skates scream Barbie, from the pink and white details to the sparkles put into the wheels. So, if you’re ready to get in shape and look stylish, these are the skates you’re going to want to buy!

Trina Turk Janniese Romper, $398

A good romper is one of the easiest ways to look put together even when you’re exhausted. And given Barbie’s popularity, she probably gets tired easily. As summer activities ramp up and you need to head out in a stunning outfit, this Trina Turk romper will be just what you need.

Baggalini flap crossbody bag, $80

Small, quilted bags with chains are timeless and simple. They are one of those pieces that must be owned by everyone. This was proved in the 2000s when Barbie’s parent company Mattel created a bag of this style for every Barbie owner. If you’re after your own life-size version of the purse, this purse from Baggalini is just what you’re looking for. The rose shimmer hue is a soft pink and is woven throughout the bag, from the chain to the buttery fabric.

Journee Collection Odete Sandal, $69.99

Within the first ten seconds of the Barbie trailer, we get a beautiful shot of these high heel shoes with large pink feathers accenting the toe of the heel. Not a shoe for everyone, given the large plume and vibrant pink hue, but if you want to give a statement then you’re going to need some similar shoes. The closest style comes from Journee, sold at DSW. Just like the ones seen in the movie, these are soft pink with feathers sitting on top. The only difference comes in the ankle strap and the fact these are more affordable … which honestly just makes them better.

Ken

Toafers Hampton loafers, $199

Not to judge Ken, but if he owns any type of shoes then they’re probably going to be loafers. It makes sense, they’re stylish, simple, comfortable, and easy to take off when you head to the beach. The Hampton loafer from Toafers screams Ken even more than the common loafer. Made of a velvet-like fabric in a pale blush tone, the shoe is as comfortable as it is stylish.

Banana Republic linen suit trousers, $75

Well-tailored pants in a soft pink? If the animated Ken voice isn’t in your head right now going, ‘eeeeekkk!’ then you might not have watched enough Barbie movies growing up. These straight-leg pants are simple, elegant, and perfect for the dandy in your life. Need more of an excuse? They are currently on sale!

Vineyard Vines shirt, $89.50

Throughout the entirety of the movie trailer, Ken is wearing bright-colored button-downs. If you think of yourself as more of a Ken than a Barbie, snagging one of these shirts is a must. Made from linen, it’s easy to tuck in or out of any pant. The tropical print also lends a reason to purchase, it’s exactly what you’re going to need for a beach vacation!

All brand images courtesy of the respective brands

Homme + Femme doodle puffer shirt, $175

Homme + Femme clothing uses the French words for man and women to create clothing that combines the aesthetics associated with both genders. This shirt highlights the unique design take. The shoulders are boxy and clearly designed to fit a man, but the pink pinstripes and kisses printed into the shirt might give someone less secure in their masculinity a bit of a jump scare. Thankfully, Ken wears pink. And those perfect kisses on the shirt? Maybe they came from Barbie?

Glitter Eyes and Flippy Ponytails Backstage at NYFW

While many designers went for more natural looks this season, Fashion Reverie caught up with the amazing T. Cooper backstage at BKLYN Studios at Richie Rich’s return to fashion featuring the up and coming brand, Real is Rare. (In case you were not aware, T. Cooper has worked on several Fashion Reverie photo editorials. Check out “The Nina Sisterhood” and “Grace, Charm, and Beauty“)

T. Cooper: I’m T. Cooper and were backstage at the Richie Rich and Real is Rare show because there’s an opening designer, in case you guys didn’t realize. Real is Rare, that’s the designer that I’m working with today. My team, Major Face, they did the hair and the makeup, and it’s a line by British basketball player, Aljami Durham.

So, we did a fresh, clean look. It was nice basic skin, dewy finish, and we did fun rhinestones on the eyes, we did like a nice little cat eye. All [the models] have a cute little wing, a nice pop of color on the lip and then we did flippy ponytails on the girls that we could.  Then the girls that had like natural hair, curly hair, we just worked with what they have.

Real Is Rare fall 2023 images courtesy of Runway 360 Magazine

Fashion Reverie: Are you seeing a lot of ponytails on the runway this season?

T. Cooper: Yes, there’s a whole lot of ponytails, because they’re cute and the ’90s are back, right? So, that get to the ponytail with a flip classic ’90s. I know I used to do that when I was a kid. I’m excited!

FR: What else are you seeing a lot on the runway. Are you seeing a lot of sparkle?

T. Cooper: I’m not seeing a lot of sparkle [in the makeup]. A lot of designers are afraid to take away from the clothes. So, I really like when I get to work with a designer who goes for it.  But, I need to let you know that the hair looks were created using our wonderful sponsor Amika.  We used Amika irons and Amika products.

FR: What trend are you sick of? What do you not want to see any more?

T. Cooper: If I see one more damn, cut crease with glitter. I’ll kill somebody. It’s done! We had a moment. It’s done. We’re done! Ya’ll was cute, but we’re done!

New York Fashion Week Fall 2023 Is Almost Upon Us

Another New York Fashion Week (NYFW) is just around the corner, in fact, only one week away. There are some interesting brands—Marc Jacobs, Thom Browne, Rodarte, Palomo Spain, and others that are returning to this hallowed week and there are some brands that are yet to make their presence known post-COVID-19 pandemic crisis.

Still, NYFW continues. And though this very important fashion week has changed dramatically from the glory days of Bryant Park and Lincoln Center, there is still much great fashion to be experienced.

With Tom Ford leaving the CFDA—replaced by Thom Browne—it will interesting to see if this new appointment will make any substantive changes to NYFW. Only time will tell. That said, something needs to be done to put some of the magic and majesty back in this bi-annual fashion event.

Since the demise of Lincoln Center, the pre-eminent venue for NYFW until 2015, NYFW is spread out over multiple venues in New York City. (The running around from venue to venue is almost intolerable.)

Though Spring Studios is a very important space for NYFW, since 2015 NYFW has continuously searched for other venues to house NYFW. And with Spring Studios only using one floor to present fashion shows and presentations, there is not enough space to house all the shows that would like to present there.

For the fall 2023 season, Pier 59 is once again housing a few fashion shows and presentations. Unfortunately, the fashion venue on Fifth Avenue is no longer being used to present fashion shows and presentations for this upcoming season. Once again fashion industry professionals will be hurriedly scuttering all over Manhattan to fashion venues that are spaced at a considerable distance from each other. (The CFDA really needs to work on getting a venue that can house more fashion shows and presentations.)

Fashion brands that are presenting at NYFW for the first time include, but are not limited to, Inherent, Saint Sintra, Cucculelli Shaheen, WITR-Immortalization of the Soul, Zimo, Denim Heaven, Kent Anthony, Finding Happiness, and others. NYFW fall 2023 starts on February 10 and runs through February 15.

This holiday season promises to excel our last two holiday seasons. We are living in a post-COVID era, the Marriage Equality Act has passed, the rightful political party has taken over the Senate in the US, and holiday consumer sales have already outpaced last holiday season.

Still, there is still so much left to work on. In this 2022 holiday season, Fashion Reverie urges its viewers to remember what the holiday season is about—forgiveness, love, peace, joy, and harmony with your fellow man and the world.

This holiday season let goodwill and good intentions be your guiding force. Fashion Reverie wishes you all the joy, grace, and peace of this holiday season. And let 2023 be a new beginning. Remember fashion can fade, but great style always triumphs!!
