Skinny Mixes: Once Again, Necessity Is the Mother of Invention

Finding a niche in the market is just what Skinny Mixes’ Jordan Engelhardt did during the Great Recession of 2009. And a decade later her low-calorie, zero sugar mixes are flying off the shelves.

Jordan Engelhardt took time out of her busy schedule to speak to Fashion Reverie about her product, her niche in the market, and why Skinny Mixes is the perfect low-calorie, zero sugar product to help you slim down for spring/summer 2023. And have some fun while doing it!!

Fashion Reverie: You are a brave lady. In 2009 you left your job in real estate and launched Skinny Mixes out of your mother’s kitchen. Could you talk about that?

Jordan Engelhardt: My mom and I do like a cocktail from time to time. I had thought about creating a margarita mix without all the sugar and calories in the mixes I had previously used. And I thought about why a mixer product that was low calorie didn’t exist. I started doing research and found that there was not a low-calorie or zero calorie cocktail mix on the market at that time.

I tried to create something that was zero sugar or low calorie on my own. So, that is how the idea started.

It was also a pivotal time in my life. I produced this idea during the financial crisis of 2009. I was a real estate appraiser, and the bottom was falling out of that market. So, the timing was key.

FR: So, tell us more about Skinny Mixes.

Jordan Engelhardt: Skinny Mixes is a line of low-calorie cocktail mixes, coffee syrups, low-calorie enhancers for desserts, and water enhancers. It is all about indulging without the guilt of calories and a lot of sugar.

FR: Your product has zero calories and natural flavors and colors. Could you talk more about that?

Jordan Engelhardt: Our newest launch in the natural flavors line. The process of developing a natural flavors line had developed over time as consumers wanted natural flavors. So, it was a simple conclusion that we needed to add this dimension to our product line. We worked with a lab to get the formulations right and develop a product that is quite good.

FR: How long did it take you to find natural flavors that really worked?

Jordan Engelhardt: Over time we have added more flavors. Every year we produce forty new launches which includes new flavors. The process from start to finish takes anywhere from three to six months. Which is faster than a lot of similar companies.

FR: You have recently added new flavors French Vanilla, Caramel, Pumpkin Spice, and Peppermint Mocha. Could you talk about these new additions?

Jordan Engelhardt: We have had a lot of success with our natural sweetener line. We are now in Target and Meijer. And the product is selling well so naturally we wanted to expand the line to our new four flavors that consumers really wanted. We have a great relationship with our customers and communicate with them regularly. And these are the flavors they told us that they wanted. We pivoted and did it.

We have eight natural flavors combined with our eighty other products. And we are continuing to add more products.

FR: Do the French Vanilla, Caramel, Pumpkin Spice and Peppermint Mocha only work as coffee enhancers?

Jordan Engelhardt: They do work well as coffee enhancers, but people also use them to sweeten desserts and baked goods. You can add Pumpkin Spice to cupcakes, pies, and a variety of baked goods.

FR: Who is your customer?

Jordan Engelhardt: Our customer has broadened and continues to broaden. Our core consumer is anyone from 18 years of age to 55 years of age, and mostly female.

FR:  What are your price points?

Jordan Engelhardt: We are an inexpensive product, anywhere from $7.99 to $12.99. We do offer bundles and sales on our site from time to time.

FR: Is this a growing market where consumers are looking to add low-calorie sweeteners and/or zero sugar products to their food intake? Could you speak to that?

Jordan Engelhardt: Between customers wanting to be healthier to not wanting to add lots of sugar to millennials looking to customize their drinks, there is a trend to looking beyond Starbucks and other similar retailers for customized coffee drinks. By investing in coffee machines, consumers realized that they could make their own custom drinks and Skinny Mixes is perfect for that consumer.

And as many people are working from home and have coffee machines, why spend all a lot of money at Starbucks when you can make the same product at home while you are working and same some bucks at the same time. Skinny Mixes just blends into this new dynamic.

 FR: Are you looking to expand to other products?

Jordan Engelhardt: We are always expanding and innovating, looking to produce something new for our consumers. There are new and exciting things in the pipeline.

FR: New York Bridal Week finished a week ago, why would your product be great for a bridal party or the bridal reception party?

Jordan Engelhardt: Skinny Mixes lends itself well to some beautiful low-calorie and zero sugar cocktails at bridal parties. Our product is fantastic for that bride who is trying to slim down a couple of months before her wedding and works well for those bridal guests who don’t want to overindulge in sugary cocktails at the reception.
