A Fashion Lookback at 2023

2023 was an interesting year with great challenges. In the greater global community, this was a year of Russia assault on Ukraine, continued Israel and Palestinian conflicts, and a year emerging out of the COVID-19 pandemic.

In the fashion community there were similar shifts, conflicts, and transitions. Some fashion industry professionals transitioned to fashionable Elysian Fields of another dimension, while others exited iconic fashion brands and the transmutational nature of fashion continued in true form.

Fashion Reverie looks back all the comings and goings of 2023:

Goodbye and so long!

Paco Rabanne

Paco Rabanne was a fashion visionary who helped transform fashion in the 1960s. His chainmail creations and futuristic A-line minidresses became the go-to fashion for those young consumers that wanted to express their freedom from the restrictive clothes of the 1950s. Think Jane Fonda’s film vehicle, “Barbarella,” which Rabanne designed many of the clothes. Rabanne also made strides in the fragrance industry with his successful 1 Million and Lady Million fragrances. Rabanne was 88 years of age.

Gail O’Neill

If you are fascinated by those leggy black models of the 1980s and 1990s, you are very aware of African American model Gail O’Neill. The black glamazon graced the runways of Ralph Lauren, Calvin Klein, Donna Karan, Perry Ellis, Marc Jacobs, and Michael Kors. Additionally, O’Neill secured ad campaigns for Coca Cola, Avon, and Revlon. O’Neill was known for her stance against smoking and would not appear in ad campaigns that promoted cigarettes or for companies that would not divest investments from South Africa. Gail O’Neill passed away from a terminal illness at the age of 61.

Mary Quant

When you think about sixties mode style, Mary Quant comes immediately to mind. Referred to as the ‘Mother of the Miniskirt,’ Quant is synonymous with Twiggy’s 60’s style and that ‘Georgy Girl’ style of the sixties. Think of those Peter Pan minidresses in bold prints. Quant was ninety-three when she transitioned.

Jane Birkin

We’ve all heard of Hermes‘ Birkin bag. Well, who do you think the Birkin bag was inspired by? Jane Birkin was a French film star and style icon of the 1960s. Complaining that she could not find a bag that met her needs, while seated next to Jean-Louis Dumas on a plane, Dumas sketched a design of bag that met Jane Birkin’s needs, and voila the Birkin bag was borne.

Marc Bohan

Though some consumers may not be familiar with Bohan, he helmed Dior for over 30 years, replacing Yves Saint Laurent after Laurent departed from Dior. Paying close attention to pop culture influences of the 1960s and 70s, Bohan helped usher the House of Dior into a luxury brand the young consumers could embrace.

Fashion trends of 2023

Plus-size no more, or almost

One of the biggest fashion trends of the 2023 fashion season is the lack of plus-size models on the runway or in fashion campaigns. For over a decade there has been a concerted effort to have fashion brands include a diversity of sizes in their runway collections and campaigns. And it appears that change is afoot. In fact, some top plus-size models in the last decade became supermodels, namely Precious Lee and Ashley Graham.

In 2023, the change that we all supported and hoped for seems to have evaporated. According to an article in The Cut, “an analysis of 9,137 looks across 219 shows in New York, London, Milan, and Paris during the recent fashion weeks, only 17 brands included at least one plus-size (U.S. size 14-plus) look. That means that 95.6 percent of looks were worn by models in U.S. sizes zero to four. And just 3.8 percent were worn by midsize models (sizes six to 12).”

What has replaced sized models are very tall models, from 5`11 and up, with curvy bodies—models from a size six to a size 12. There was also a drastic reduction in trans models in campaigns and runways for 2023.

African designers proliferate in the US

Another big fashion trend of note is the inclusion and expansion of African designers onto the US ready-to-wear and bridal platforms. Fashion designers from the Motherland for several decades have been a part of the fashion pantheon. However, there was not the plethora of African designers that we are now seeing, particularly in the bridal market.

Nardos Imam , Ese Azenabor, Daniel Mofor, and Rami Al Ali, are a few African fashion designers that have made inroads into the New York Fashion market in 2023. Nardos, Mofor, and Azenabor have even opened boutiques in New York City. And when presenting their collections they choose the most elite venues for their collections, namely the Grand Ballroom at the New York Plaza Hotel, and The Regency Hotel.

Changes and Migrations

John Varvatos

Every year there are job migrations and changes in the fashion industry. As Heidi Klum would always so on “Project Runway,” “One day you are end, and the next day, you are out.”

Noted American menswear designer John Varvatos has been appointed as the new creative director of Under Armour. Varvatos has an incredible resume of accomplishments in the fashion industry. He has manned his eponymous brand for almost three decades, as well as having worked for Calvin Klein, Converse, and Polo Ralph Lauren.

Under Armour is betting that Varvatos can bring a fresh approach to the brand with retail sales waning in the past few years. In the past recent quarter. Revenue fell 2.4% to $1.32 billion.

Jenna Lyons

Who would have believed the Jenna Lyons, once the creative director of J. Crew, would join the cast of Real Housewives of New York City (RHONY). Lyons admitted in a Page Six interview that after leaving J. Crew, her phone was not ringing with fashion offers. “And then all of the sudden I didn’t have anything on my agenda, and no one was calling, and no one was getting me lunch, and no one was inviting me anywhere, and I was like, ‘Whoa,’” she told Page Six. “Now I can look back and say… I was really struggling. I was just exhausted.”

Lyons admitted on the “Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon” about being cast on “RHONY,” “[It’s] not the most, like, natural career change, I know.”

Edward Enninful

Lots of folks were excited when Edward Enninful took over the helm of British Vogue, especially people of color. As the first black to serve as editor-in-chief at a British fashion magazine, Enninful had many accomplishments since taking over British Vogue in 2017.

As a high-profile advocate of diversity and inclusion, Enniful put first mixed-race model on the cover of British Vogue. He also allowed the first man, Timothée Chalamet, to grace the cover of British Vogue in 2022, and he also placed the first climate activist, Greta Thunberg, on the cover.

Enninful will stay within the Conde Nast family, assuming the position of Vogue‘s global creative and cultural advisor. He will continue as association with British Vogue as an editorial advisor.

Peter Do

In 2023 the elusive Peter Do was named creative director of Helmut Lang. Peter Do will remain at his eponymous brand while assuming his post at Helmut Lang.

“Last year, when I was thinking about the next move in my career, one thing remained consistent even when everything else felt uncertain. I needed to continue doing my part in helping the city I love most regain its stature as the center of gravity for everyone who cares about radical thinking in fashion,” he wrote, as reported in dailyfrontrow.com.

Tom Ford

After Tom Ford’s eponymous fashion brand was acquired by Estee Lauder for 2.3 billion dollars, it was questioned if Ford would stay on as creative director. Well, Ford did step down with his post assumed over by Tom Ford senior vice president Peter Hawkings.

“Since the creation of Tom Ford menswear, Peter has been instrumental in the success of the brand. He is an incredibly talented leader with tremendous industry experience, and his appointment gives me confidence that my commitment to creating fashion products with the highest level of design and quality will continue,” explained Tom Ford.

Martha Stewart

Speak, about 2023 as a year of change? Who would believe an octogenarian would grace the cover of Sports Illustrated Swimwear edition? Martha Stewart to the rescue.

“When I heard that I was going to be on the cover of Sports Illustrated [Swimwear], I thought, ‘Oh, that’s pretty good, I’m going to be the oldest person I think ever on a cover of Sports Illustrated,’” said the 81-year- old Stewart, adding, “And I don’t think about age very much, but I thought that this is kind of historic.”

Martha posed for the 2023 swimsuit issue in the Dominican Republic. The issue showcases Stewart in a total of ten looks.

Don Morphy Sets Men’s Luxury Standard for the Holiday Season

This time of the year, the weather outside could be frighteningly cold, giving rise to those warm, sentimental feelings that go with Yuletide bliss. Those Yuletide memories conjure up images of family, good food, and cheer. Not far behind these images are all the colors, textures, and glam and glitz of the holiday season. Add to that, memories of holiday parties and great fashion.

The 2023 holiday season should be the season that you stand out from all others. And if you are a male consumer there is no better way to grab attention than in a Don Morphy luxury suit.

If you don’t know who Don Morphy is, you should. In the ever-evolving menswear market where menswear glitz and glam is becoming the order of the day, Don Morphy is setting a luxury standard.

Daniel Morfo

From the brand’s 2019 Fashion Group International menswear win, this exciting menswear brand is enjoying great success and gaining brand recognition in a very saturated market. Fashion Reverie was fortunate to visit the Don Morphy store in New York City and talk with creative director Daniel Morfo about his exciting men’s luxury brand.

Fashion Reverie: How did you get started in the fashion industry?

Daniel Morfo: I am originally from Cameroon, and I moved to the United States to attend Texas Southern University (TSU), majoring in computer engineering. When I graduated from TSU, I started working for Walmart in Arkansas as a computer engineer. I worked at Walmart for 13 years. Later, I quit my job at Walmart to follow my dream of becoming a menswear fashion designer.

FR: That is a very brave move, how did you find the courage to quit a stable job and work in a field as unstable as the fashion industry?

Daniel Morfo: I was very successful as a computer engineer, but I wasn’t happy. I didn’t know if I would be successful as a menswear designer, but I took the risk. I did have a bankroll to finance my dream, but it was all or nothing, so I took the plunge.

I quit my job and moved to Dallas, and it was very difficult the first couple of years. My first clients were the Los Angeles Lakers’ Dwight Howard and Televangelist/Author T. D. Jakes. Acquiring these clients gave me a lot of confidence and I knew I was on my way. Additionally, I was the Fashion Group International menswear award winner in Dallas and New York City in 2019.

FR: How did you come up with the name of your company, Don Morphy?

Daniel Morfo: Back in Cameroon, friends called me ‘The Don,’ because I love to wear hats and I was the best dressed guy in the class. When I started my company, I wanted ‘Don’ to be a part of the name. My last name is Morfo, so I conjured up the name ‘Don Morphy,” which is a play on names. It sounded just right!!

When I dress my clients, I want them to feel like ‘The Don,’ because a don is a boss.  The word don also means to dress. When my clients get dressed in my menswear they are morphing into ‘The Don.’

FR: Your design aesthetic is men’s luxury suiting. Why that direction for your company?

Daniel Morfo: Men’s luxury suiting is a niche. Every man can dress casually, but luxury dressing is something special. I learned about luxury suiting while studying menswear in Naples, Italy. And suiting is what I love to do.

FR: And why did you choose Dallas, Texas to start your company?

Daniel Morfo: Dallas was a much better menswear market than Arkansas and a more affordable place to launch my business than New York City or Los Angeles. There is also a large African population in Dallas, and African men love to dress and show their personal style.

FR: How did you come to open your menswear boutique on the Upper Eastside in New York City?

Daniel Morfo: As my Dallas boutique was doing very well, I was contemplating opening another store in a major American city. I considered Houston and Los Angeles. New York City was actually third on my list.

That said, my good friend Ese Azenabor was opening her bridal boutique on Madison Avenue and East 91st Street. When I came to check out her boutique, I fell in love with New York City and more importantly the Upper Eastside. I wondered if there was a space available on Madison Avenue, the luxury shopping center of the world, and behold there was a space available right next to Ese Azenabor’s bridal boutique.

So, I decided to take the blunge. I knew it would be tough; however, I have survived tough times before and I knew I could do it.

FR: What makes your luxury suits and jackets stand out among similar brands?

Daniel Morfo: We stand out because we know how to play with colors and patterns. We are confident in our abilities to mix and match colors and patterns to the best effect. Normally, men are afraid color. To be a Don Morphy man, you are not afraid of color because we demonstrate to our male consumers how to wear color in a way that suits their personal style and taste.

FR: What would your attribute to male consumers current embrace of color and embellishments?

Daniel Morfo: The expansion and injection of social media plays a huge role in this embrace of color and embellishments in menswear. Everyone wants to stand out and be different.

A have consumer who owns about 100 of my suits because each time he wears a suit and puts it on social media and gets a great response, he wants to show something different. Men’s fashion is usually very basic, unlike women’s wear which has a huge array of colors, textures, and fabrications. Now, because of social media, a basic suit gets you no likes or followers. You need something that catches online consumers’ interest.

FR: Do you believe that hip-hop culture is adding to this widening acceptance of more color. In other words, a new definition of masculinity?

Daniel Morfo: With the music videos and a wider embrace of style and distinctiveness, there is more of a demand for garments that are eye-catching. For male consumers who are bombarded with so many images every day, you cannot keep their interest with the same basic silhouettes, colors, and patterns.

Remember, so many boundaries have been broken down and the world is now one place. Distance and time no longer divide people. And social media gives exposure to so many things quickly and globally.

Africans love bold colors and instead of the embrace of bold color being something that African embraced on the African continent, that aesthetic is now shared around the whole world.

FR: Who is your customer?

Daniel Morfo: My customer is that guy who is very stylist and wants to look different. We also make high-end menswear for grooms. And many potential grooms come to us because they don’t want to diminish next to the bride who is getting all the attention. They want to stand out also. They want to keep up with the bride, not outshine her. What should also be noted is that we also dress the entire groom party.

FR: Does your customer need deep pockets?

Daniel Morfo: We make garments for a variety of male consumers at different price points. Our price points for our basic suits are at an affordable price point and as the embellishments are added, the price point goes up.

We have 20,000 fabrics to choose from, so eighty percent of our business is custom made garments with 20 percent being off the rack. Depending on a consumer’s budget, we can match style and fabric to the price point.

The average price point for a groom’s tuxedo is $1800. And, if you want to add crystal embellishments, the price point could go up to about $3000.

FR: What’s next for Don Morphy?

Daniel Morfo: We are thinking about stores in Houston and Los Angeles. The most important thing right now is to get more traction in the New York market.

Dippity Don’t Says: October 2023

Fashion Reverie would like to take this moment to wish you all a happy fall. Halloween season is upon, and October fashion also includes moments for great costumes. While you were at the Spirit Halloween store trying to figure out what to dress as, Fashion Reverie was gathering scandals and getting the behind-the-scenes dish in the fashion industry. Dippity Don’t is prepared with your October treats.

This designer, who was known for being on a reality fashion competition series, was originally one of the headlining acts for this New York Fashion Week (NYFW) event. However, after this scandalous lawsuit against this reality star, he had to pull out. The case is currently making its way through court, and it’s unclear as to when he’ll return the runway in the wake of his legal woes.

This designer, who had a spectacle of a fashion show during NYFW, was almost a few sponsors shy of his fashion show not occurring. At the eleventh hour, his sponsors pulled out, leaving him high and dry, with the venue asking who was going to pay the bills. While the show went on, payment on those bills was delayed.

A fashion designer, who was profiled by the New York Times, has been dropped by her PR firm. She was reportedly increasingly difficult to work with and was become known for her volatile social media persona. While the designer has talent, it looks like her attitude is setting her brand behind the eight ball, so to speak.

This top fashion designer is set to launch a new line; however, they are now in hot water. Clips have resurfaced discussing how she once complained about using Black models. In this day and age and with Black consumers being major drivers of luxury fashion sales, it’s not a good look for her amid a brand launch.

One top fashion editor’s sitting placements and early show departures caused quite a scandal during Paris Fashion Week. She reportedly expressed disdain at being seated next to this major celebrity and also left one major designer’s show during the finale walk. What happened to fashion show etiquette?

The new creative director’s first collection for this major luxury brand just landed in stores … but it doesn’t look like they are seeing the sales rebound. After sales fell to the depths of Hades under their last creative director, this brand is desperate for a rebound. Is it possible they’ve lost too many of their old customers to reclaim their once coveted status?

New York International Bridal Week Fall 2024 Pre-coverage

If you live in New York City and you are a fashion industry professional, you are very aware of the fact that New York Fashion Week and Bridal Week are scheduled very close to each other. In fact, the two fashion weeks are only a month apart.

The close scheduling of these two esteemed fashion weeks gives industry professionals only a short breather between the hustle and bustle and the fabulosity. And though New York Fashion Week undoubtedly has more variety in terms of bold color, fashion-forward sensibility, and design aesthetic, Bridal Week does hold its own.

Several things have occurred in the bridal market that should be acknowledged. For way too long bridal design was the province of white bridal designers with a few Asian and Latin designers thrown in for good measure. That is no longer the case, The bridal market has expanded to include designers of color from not only the US, but designers that have deep roots in Eritrea, Nigeria, Syria, Egypt, and Haiti.

Additionally, the bridal market has expanded to include more options for grooms and the wedding party in general. All these new directions have resulted in a bridal market that is more inclusive, diverse and ever evolving. And Fashion Reverie will be front center bring our viewers all the action.

Stay tuned!!

Fall 2023 Trends

As we are solidly into the fall season, old trends are back with fresh new twists. Autumn staples are receiving updates and designers are pushing the boundaries of old classics. They are leaving the staid fall color pallets behind embracing the saturated versions like Fiery Red.

Images courtesy of Citizens of Humanity and Levi’s

Resurgence of Denim

This fall denim is back once again and more popular than ever, appearing in new experimental ways. Not only will you find denim in its traditional form as jeans, but many brands and designers are using denim in a nontraditional sense. Long skirts, oversized jeans, cargo jeans and overshirts are just some of the denim pieces that are popular this season. Classic jeans are also getting an update which is exemplified with Emma Chamberlin’s collab with Levi’s harkening back to the 90’s when patches were commonly found. This fresh update also pays homage to the current trend of Thrift flips as well, where people are updating old jeans with creative patches of other used clothing.

The Skinny Jean resurgence is not happening this fall, Designers are continuing to offer more straight leg and even oversized jeans as well as releasing runway-inspired shapes such as the Horseshoe Jeans by Citizens of Humanity. Full denim looks are back again, now with new interpretations such as pairing tops with denim bottoms in the same or similar wash and embracing the super baggy fit. This fall we will be seeing denim used not only as a staple but also as statement pieces.

Big Shoulders

Big shoulders were seen repeatedly on the fall 2023 runway, embracing a trend that developed alongside the women’s movement. This fall designers are challenging the idea that broad shoulders are not feminine. Annakiki translated this trend into big puffy shoulders as part of a long sleeve houndstooth mini dress. Another designer that utilized this trend was Luar, who created a full-length dress in the style of a double-breasted coat with strong statement shoulders. Many mass market brands have been inspired to bring back boxy padded shoulders, such as Banana Republic as with a specific top are embracing the sharp and clean shoulder silhouettes of this fall. This trend is very in line with the wave of more androgynous clothing that challenges gender stereotypes.

Dresses and Skirts over Pants

The 2000’s fashion trend resurgence continues with the return of a trend that continues to be controversial. Layering skirts and dresses over pants were often a more juvenile look in the early 2000s, this trend is now back with a mature transformation. Instead of the youthful mixing and matching of patterns, you will now see this layering done within the same color or in matching tones.

Fendi and Chanel are just two of the fashion brands who have contributed to this resurgence. This look is more versatile than ever, even being translated into athleisure wear by pairing the look with tennis shoes or making it office appropriate by throwing a pleated skirt over a traditional suit for a fun feminine touch. Monochromatic pieces are a great way to get into this trend for a sleek yet fashionable update on the normal fall outfit. For those who are feeling brave, feel free to mix textiles and silhouettes like combining a flowy skirt with a structured pair of pants.

Elevated Trench Coats

Another classic trend that is making a comeback with a twist is the trench coat. Designers are taking this piece and giving it show stopping upgrades such as Fendi’s Sparkly trench coat or experimenting with asymmetrical hems. The popularity and reinvention of the trench coat also goes hand in hand with the emergence of business casual being brought to the mainstream market. Brands love the statement trench coat. You will be able to find them in all shapes, textures, and patterns this fall.

Fiery Red Color Tones

Goodbye Barbie Pink and Hello Fiery Red. This fall there is a new statement color in town. Designers and brands alike are embracing this bold color that is likened to fashion’s favorite accessory, a bold red lip. No more muted tones like Ox-Blood from fall season past, this fall brighter, and bolder tones will be the trend. Ferragamo and Tory Burch are some of the brands that are showing the versatility of this new IT color. Its versatility can be demonstrated in it being found anywhere from shoes and accessories to coats and even recycled leather pants like the ones from Agolde.

New York Fashion Week Spring 2024 Season Pre-Coverage

When temperatures start to cool down slightly—well, not exactly this year—and students head back to school, you know that it is that time of the year, the start of a new fashion season. New York Fashion Week (NYFW) almost marks the start of a new fashion season, always taking place right after Labor Day.

Unlike Bridal Fashion Week, which shows collections a year in advance, NYFW shows the spring fashion collections in September, only six months in advance. And some NYFW collections are employing the see-now-buy-now business model in which consumers can buy garments right off of the runway.

That said, like previous fashion weeks, some of the most well-known American fashion brands continue to present collections at NYFW, namely Calvin Klein, Michael Kors, Marc Jacobs, Anna Sui, Proenza Schouler, Bibhu Mohapatra, Christian Siriano, Badgley Mischka, Tommy Hilfiger, Ralph Lauren, Tory Burch, plus others. Additionally, there are fashion brands making their debut at NYFW week. The list includes Bugatchi, Mirror Palais, Priscavera, Nicholas Raefski, NARDOS, Connor McKnight, Zankov, Retrayage, Diotima, Kallmeyer, Ashlyn, and many others. In fact, this season there appears to be a significant injection of brands debuting at NYFW.
