Fashion News Alert: Melania Mayhem, J Lo Opens New Stores, Vera Wang and Hugo Boss Exit NYFW, and Cindy Crawford Scion Lands Marc Jacob Beauty Campaign

The public backlash and expanded beyond President Elect Donald Trump to his wife Melania. French designer Sophie Theallet has declared that she will never dress the FLOTUS to be, and encourages other designers to follow suit. Theallet in the past has dressed First Lady Michelle Obama.

“As an independent fashion brand, we consider our voice an expression of our artistic and philosophical ideas. The Sophie Theallet brand stands against all discrimination and prejudice. Our runway shows, ad campaigns and celebrity dressing have always been a celebration of diversity and a reflection of the world we live in,” confides Theallet in a letter on her social media outlets.

I am well aware it is not wise to get involved in politics. That said, as a family-owned company, our bottom line is not just about money. We value our artistic freedom and always humbly seek to contribute to a more humane, conscious and ethical way to create in this world,” continues Theallet.

“As an immigrant myself in this country, I have been blessed with the opportunity to pursue my dreams in the USA. Dressing the First Lady Michelle Obama for the past 8 years has been a highlight and an [honor]. She has contributed to having our name [recognized] and respected worldwide. Her values, actions and grace have always resonated deeply within me.”

While Theallet has taken this militant stance, Tommy Hilfiger has a more conciliatory approach. At the Angel Ball, Hilfiger told WWD, “I don’t think people should become political about it”…”I think Melania is a very beautiful woman and I think any designer should be proud to dress her,” added the designer. “Ivanka is equally as beautiful and smart, although she wears her own clothes. I don’t think people should become political about it. Everyone was very happy to dress Michelle [Obama] as well. I think they look great in the clothes. You’re not gonna get much more beautiful than Ivanka or Melania.”

Since Hilfiger’s comments were shared on social media, the public has been outraged at his comments.

J. Lo expansion

“American Idol” may be over, but Jennifer Lopez’s media domination continues. In early 2016 Jennifer Lopez opened the J. Lo by Jennifer Lopez store in Unicentro, Colombia. J. Lo by Jennifer Lopez is in partnership with local distributors.

Next week, the international pop artist plans to open another store in Cali. Colombia is the second Latin American country to carry the boutique.

The brand offers women’s wear items that are reminiscent of the singer and actress’ outfits and style. Jeans, party dresses, tops and leather jackets are combined in unique and glamorous ways, empowering women of all ages. J Lo intends open three additional standalone stores in Colombia by the end of 2016.

Crawford dynasty

The Cindy Crawford fashion dynasty continues. At 50, Cindy Crawford is still going strong with a plethora of projects in the works. However, not far behind Cindy is her 15-year old daughter, Kaia Gerber.

Kaia Gerber has been pegged as the new face of Marc Jacobs’ beauty campaign. “I’m so excited and honored that my first beauty campaign is with Marc Jacobs, an icon in the fashion industry. I’m obsessed with his beauty products, and like everything else he does, Marc Jacobs Beauty makes you feel feminine and playful,” exclaimed Kaia Gerber in a fashionnetwork.com article.

This campaign stays true to the Marc Jacob aesthetic with Kaia sporting wild, red hair and dramatic blue and black eyeliner. This campaign is not Kaia Gerber’s first campaign. Kaia has posed for such major brands as Chrome Hearts, Alexander Wang, and Miu Miu.

Boss and Wang bow out

There is more trouble for New York Fashion Week: The Shows (NYFWS). Vera Wang and Hugo Boss have opted not to show during New York Fashion Week: The Shows fall 2017 season in February. These latest exits from two major brands continue to demonstrate that significant changes need to be made to NYFWS if the fashion week is to continue and not go the way of Miami Swimwear or LA Fashion Week.

Boss is putting most of its effort into New York Fashion Week: Men’s fall 2017 that shows from January 30–February 3, opting out of NYFWS. Wang has decided to make a short film of her fall 2017 collection to be shown in Paris on February 28, the same day Wang receives the Legion d’honneur in Paris.

In September, Sophie Theallet, Derek Lam, Diane von Furstenberg, and Kate Spade chose presentations over runway shows for their spring 2017 collections. And missing from the September roster was Venexiana, Badgley Mischka, Greg Lauren, and several others.

Trouble for Nasty Gal

Last week the Los Angeles–based clothing brand Nasty Gal filed for bankruptcy. The announcement came after Nasty Gal let go of 10% of its staff in February.

Launched in 2006, Nasty Gal has grown to a 100 million dollar empire with two brick and mortar stores in Los Angeles. In 2015 the brand tapped a venture capitalist firm for $65 million in order to roll out more brick-and-mortar stores.

Nasty Gal currently carries a wide array of brands, as well as its own private label with price points ranging from low to mid-level.

70 is the charm

In celebration of its 70th anniversary, Christian Dior is publishing a superb seven-volume anthology, each book dedicated to one of the seven couturiers that have been in charge of design at the Parisian luxury label since its creation in 1947. Those seven designers include Christian Dior, Yves Saint Laurent, Marc Bohan, Gianfranco Ferré, John Galliano, Raf Simons, and Maria Grazia Chiuri. The seven-volume anthology will be published by Assouline.

The seven-volume anthology will be published in 2017 and 2018 with the first volume, “Dior by Christian Dior 1947-1957” being released in December of 2016 in French, English, and Chinese. “Dior by Christian Dior 1947-1957 is illustrated with pictures by Laziz Hamani, and contains a selection of Christian Dior’s most important haute couture creations. The text by fashion historian Olivier Saillard tells the story of the eighty items chosen, including the renowned ‘Bar’ two-piece suite designed in 1947.

Another fire

Thirteen Indian garment workers were killed in a fire that raged through a leather factory in the Uttar Pradesh state. Another eight workers were critically injured.

We are reason to believe that it may be linked to an electrical short circuit, but we are still looking into it,” Deepak Kumar, Ghaziabad’s Senior Superintendent of Police, told reporters. “Everyone worked together to rescue the people inside the building. These included local residents, police, fire and ambulance services.”

This recent fire highlights the neglect and lack of safety regulations in so many of the garment factories in South Asia. In 2013, the Rana Plaza factory explosion killed 1,100 garment workers and in October a fire in an explosive factory killed 8 workers.

“Despite the many disasters we have seen before, and the great amount of attention to the dangerous working conditions in the South Asian garment industry, factories there largely remain unsafe. These workers were killed because they were sleeping in the factory,” said Carin Leffler of the Clean Clothes Campaign.

“The deep tragedy that took 13 peoples’ lives in Sahibabad this morning shows that there is still a long way to go before workers can feel safe.”

There are a lot of new challenges for Pharrell Williams, from expecting a child to creating his first collection for G-Star Raw after being named the head of imagination for the brand in February 2016; Pharrell has a lot on his plate. Can he handle it all?

From the looks revealed at California’s ComplexCon event, Fashion Reverie says, yes!! The “G-Star Raw Ellwood X25” collection contains 25 prints from checks, camouflage, stripes and leopard print, which according to the brand, symbolizes G-Star’s “ever-present commitment to innovation and self-expression”.

“What we are trying to do is make a space for creativity and experimentation. We’re not trying to tell people what to do and what to think, but just help them to express themselves openly [, to] choose what to wear and how to wear it. This collection is about freedom of choice—it’s about adding democracy to your wardrobe,” comments Pharrell Williams.

Another one bites the dust

J. Crew is saying adios to its bridal wear. Once J. Crew’s current stock of bridal wear sells out, the brand will not restock.

J. Crew expanded into bridal wear in 2004, opening a Madison Ave boutique in 2010. J. Crew’s bridal wear very quickly became known for simple, yet elegant silhouettes at an affordable price. The bridal wear also was recognized as one of the first bridal brands to embrace same color, different cut bridesmaid dresses.

It is believed that J. Crew is shuttering its bridal wear because of waning sales.

Fashion News Alert: Ivanka Trump Label under Attack, Zendaya’s New Line, Andreja Pejic’s Holiday Campaign, and H&M Says Goodbye to David Beckham

Macy’s cut commercial ties with Donald Trump months ago, is the same thing about to happen to Ivanka Trump? If social media has anything to do with it, Ivanka Trump might be feeling the sting as well.

In recent weeks, there has been a rallying cry on social media for major retailers like Nordstrom’s, Lord & Taylor and other major retailers to dump clothing and accessory brands that Ivanka Trump may be associated with, according to USA Today. And e-commerce shopping tool ShopRunner confirms a 40 percent drop in interest in the Ivanka Trump brand since the online boycott began in early October.

Still, the online social media protest does not seem to be hurting Ivanka’s brands when it comes to purchasing. The privately held company said earlier this month that it saw 37 percent growth in sales and revenue last year compared with 2014. “When it comes to Ivanka, I think people make the distinction between the political and the paternal,’’ says Robert Passikoff, president at Brand Keys, a brand loyalty consultancy company.

Transitioning back

Transgender supermodel Andreja Pejic is not looking back!! Since transitioning from a non-gender conforming male to a transgender female in 2014, supermodel Andreja Pejic has scored two campaigns; Make Up Forever in 2015 and mostly recently Reformation’s holiday campaign.

Fashion pundits believed that when Pejic transitioned to trans female his meteoric career will fizzle out. And to some extent, the momentum did die down from Pejic’s heydey of modeling for Jean-Paul Gaultier, Marc Jacobs, Richard Chai and many others, with an additional over 100 magazine covers to Pejic’s credit. Still, you gotta be who you are!! And Pejic’s career is beginning to get back on track.

The 20-image Reformation holiday campaign shows Pejic in a vintage-looking hotel, posing in the brand’s newest collection. The holiday collection features a selection of party dresses, with an emphasis on metallics, feathers, plunging necklines and sky-high hemlines. The holiday collection’s price points begin at about $128 and product is not available in Reformation stores and online.

Reformation is an environmentally friendly, Los Angeles-based fashion brand that prides itself in not increasing the global footprint with sound environmental practices. Reformation’s design aesthetic is a minimal approach to fashion to that appeals to millenials.

Au revoir Beckham

All good things must come to an end. And it appears that H&M is ending its long-time collaboration with European Football superstar, David Beckham after the current fall collection.

Since 2011, Beckham is been the front man for a number of collections with the Swedish mega-brand. Beckham has collaborated with H&M on outerwear to knitwear, tailoring and the Bodywear offer, as well as being the face and body of major ad campaigns in the five years since. H&M has not ruled out collaborating with the 41-year old ex-football player in the future.

Fashion News Alert: Donatella’s New Book, Gigi and Bella Hadid Tapped for Victoria’s Secret, and Anniesa Hasibuan’s Causes Controversy

Donatella Versace is doing more than just designing clothes. With the help of fashion critic and curator Maria Luisa Frisa and W magazine editor-in-chief Stefano Tonchi, Donatella has recently penned a book about the House of Versace.

The 336-page tabletop book, “Versace,” details the history of the Versace brand with 250 black and white and color images by Richard Avedon, Steven Meisel, and Mario Testiono with additional commentary by Tim Blanks and Ingrid Sischy. “Versace” includes runway, red carpet, and backstage images of the Versace collections, as well as images of Naomi Campbell, Linda Evangelista, Christy Turlington and celebrities.

“For me, fashion cannot be confined to one enclosed space. Fashion is part of pop culture, speaks the language of rock and is closely related to art and technology. It is thanks to clothing that contemporary icons create their unforgettable image,” explained Donatella.

“Versace” published by Rizzoli, is available now in Europe and will be released in the US in November.

Earlier in the week, it was announced that both Hadids walking in the Victoria’s Secret show will be the first time two siblings will walk in the show together. Gigi and Bella will join the likes of Adriana Lima, Alessandra Ambrosio, Lily Aldridge, Jasmine Tookes, Lais Ribeiro and Martha Hunt, among others.

The 2016 Victoria’s Secret fashion show will air on CBS on December 5.

Hajib controversy

Though Indonesian designer Anniesa Hasibuan’s spring 2017 collection was positively hailed by the critics, not everyone praised her efforts. Hasibuan’s spring 2017 collection marked the first time a designer had all the models in a show wear hijabs during New York Fashion Week: The Shows.

“Everyone appreciated my designs, praise be to God,” she said Friday at Jakarta Fashion Week, according to fashionunited.com. Hasibuan has previously shown in Cannes, Istanbul and London, and while Hasibuan has been praised internationally, many critics in her native Indonesia have found her colorfully decorated hijabs immodest.

Conservative Muslims criticize Hasibuan for elaborately embellishing the hijabs in collection, arguing that hijabs are symbols of modesty, not luxurious fashion items. Others complain that Hasibuan’s hijabs did not adequately cover the models’ neck and chest. All the Indonesian criticism of Hasibuan is surprising in that Muslim fashion in Indonesia are more extravagant and daring than in more conservative Muslim countries.

Still, Anniesa Hasibuan is not discouraged. “Controversy is everywhere, I faced it here (in Indonesia) and all over the world,” she said. “But I try to stay positive.”(Associated Foreign Press)

Diversity takeover?

Thefashionspot.com just released its highly anticipated diversity report on model castings for major fashion weeks for the spring 2017 season. It seems that the spring 2017 season was the most racially diverse season in recent years with models of color making up 25 percent of the model castings.

“For the first time in recent history, more than 25 percent of the model castings were nonwhite,” the report noted, calling the runways for Spring 2017 lines “the most diverse in history…,” as reported in the huffingtonpost.com. New York Fashion Week: The Shows spring 2017 featured 30.3 percent models of color overall, while Milan used just 20.9 percent models of color, making it the worst offender. Paris employed 24.1 percent models of color, while London featured 23.5. This report is compiled from a survey of 299 shows and 8,832 model appearances from the just-concluded fashion weeks in New York, London, Paris and Milan.

While models of color seem to be making bigger strides, transgender models, curvy models and older model inclusion on the runway/presentations still has a long way to go. According to thefashionspot.com report, sixteen plus-size models walked in New York, but there were none in Paris, Milan and London. Ten transgender models appeared in total: eight in New York, one in Paris and one in Milan. According to the report, “women age 50 and above turned up on more runways this Fashion Month than in any other season in recent memory.”

Hailey Baldwin guesses right

Having Alec Baldwin as your father can be a boon to your career, but in order to have a continued relationship with a brand you need to be more than the scion of a celebrated thespian. Hailey Baldwin appears to have more going for her than having an Academy Award-winning mom and hugely popular dad.

Since being signed as a Guess spokes model a few season ago, the not yet-20-year old Hailey Baldwin has scored another success with Guess by landing both the Guess Jeans and Holiday campaigns. Not bad for a model who is only 5`7. But I guess having an Instagram following of 8.7 million helps a lot, too.

In addition to her campaigns for Guess, Hailey Baldwin has been seen on the spring 2017 catwalks of Jeremy Scott, Prabal Gurung, Dolce & Gabbana, Julien Macdonald, Elie Saab, and Tory Burch.

Fashion News Alert: Nordstrom’s Throws Moschino Out, CoverGirl’s Male Brand Ambassador, Jean Paul Gaultier’s New Fragrance Campaign, and Conde Nast Shakeup

Nordstrom’s declares a resounding no to Moschino’s “See Now, Buy Now” drug-themed spring 2017 collection. After much debate and brouhaha over Moschino’s drug-themed spring 2017 capsule collection, Nordstrom has decided to pull the already available collection from its shelves and website.

The drug-themed collection that debuted during Milan Fashion Week this past September featured images of medicinal packaging and instructional inserts of over-the-counter medication over several of the pieces in the collection. Playing on the words “capsule collection,” Moschino creative director Jeremy Scott used prescribing information—“shake well,” “warning,” consult for physician before using.”—as graphics on his garments.

Infuriated and appalled by Moschino’s drug-inspired spring 2017 collection, change.org issued a petition that asked for a boycott of Saks Fifth Avenue and Moschino stores that carried the spring 2017 collection. The petition reads, “These accessory items you are choosing to market and sell to the public for profit, which include the Chain-Strap Prescription Bottle Bag and Printed Backpack, will most likely promote more drug use. Do you have any idea of the message your company is sending to those who have suffered the loss of a loved one due to a drug overdose?”

Spurred by the heated protest against the collection Nordstroms’ told Fortune magazine, “We appreciate all the constructive feedback we received from concerned customers and ultimately decided to remove the collection from our site and the three stores where we offered it.” According to CNN, a spokesperson for Moschino said, “There was never any intent to promote prescription drug abuse. We are disheartened to hear that there has been a misunderstanding of the underlying theme of the collection.”

We always knew it would only be a matter of time before CoverGirl had a man promoting its products. With the rise of social media influencers and the popularity of transgender models and/or non-gender specific spokespeople, CoverGirl has followed suit by having social media influencer and internet makeup star James Charles become its first male brand ambassador.

Seventeen-year old James Charles spent the entire past weekend on the set working on his new CoverGirl Commercial spot. James Charles has over 400,000 followers via Instagram.

Conde Nast shakeup

When cages start to rattle at Conde Nast, you know things are not good in the publishing world.

Under pressure to increase revenue and circulation, Conde Nast recently appointed former AOL executive Jim Norton for the new role of chief business officer and president of revenue. At the same time, Edward Menischeschi, president of Conde Nast Media Group and Jill Bright, chief marketing officer, have departed Conde Nast’s hallowed halls.

“By organizing the company’s numerous revenue operations under Jim, Condé Nast will be well-positioned to quickly respond to the dynamic marketplace and our clients’ needs,” Conde Nast CEO Robert Sauerberg said in a statement on Monday. “Jim brings a great understanding of the complexities of running a massive sales enterprise and the importance of data-led sales products to maximize our effectiveness. His digital and video media expertise, vast relationships with top global advertisers and commitment to business innovation will be instrumental in our continued transformation into a next-generation multimedia company.”

Hopefully the appointment of Norton can boost Conde Nast slumping digital and video advertising. Time can only tell!!

Fashion News Alert: Transgender Models Make Big Strides, Beyoncé’s Ivy Park Second Season Collection, the Reverse Gender Pay Gap for Male Models, and Indian Textile Workers Suffer under Dutch Retailers’ Pay Scale

“Strut” image courtesy of hypebeast.com

Transgender models have recently been getting lots of media attention. From Whoopi Goldberg’s reality TV show “Strut,” to H&M’s recent fall 2016 campaign featuring transgender models to Francisco Terra, creative director of Neith Nyer, sending four transgender models down the runway during the recent Paris Fashion Week, transgender models are gaining industry traction. But, this inclusion and industry traction did not only happen in Paris.

During New York Fashion Week: The Shows spring 2017 season Gypsy Sport had six transgender models in their show. And Hood by Air, Telfar, Chromat, Kim Shui, and Eckhaus Latta peppered their shows and presentations with transgenders. There are even two model management companies, Slay Models and Trans Models that cater exclusively to transgender models. And the embrace does not seem to slowing down.

“Absolutely, it’s growing,” Pamela Tapper, the casting agent for this season’s Gypsy Sport show, told Teen Vogue.“I think anybody that can wear these clothes should be represented on the runway.”

And represented they are. Since Andre Pejic, now Andreja Pejic, made headlines closing Jean-Paul Gaultier’s show in a wedding gown and having just as many fashion covers as both a woman and man, the industry has started making room for this burgeoning force in the industry.

Reverse discrimination

As Hillary Clinton and Donald Trump battle it out in the run up to the Presidential Election,  issues of race, gender quality and a living wage are front and center. Still, very few fashion pundits comment on the fact that when it come to models income equality is reversed. Male models make substantially less then female models. “The top 10 female models all make millions,” detailed Elizabeth Rose, Head of the Men’s Board at Premier Model Management. “Only the top three male models make over a million.”

Female supermodels can earn up to $50, 000 dollars walking in top designer’s runway show, while a male supermodel might earn comparatively a paltry $13,000. Not a small check by any stretch, but when compared to a female supermodel, the male supermodel makes three times less.

However, things are looking up. Because of social media, male supermodels like Lucky Blue Smith, Chad White, Sean O’Pry and Adonis Bosso are demanding larger fees. And they are getting it!!

Second time around for Ivy Park

The second collection for Beyoncé’s active wear brand, Ivy Park, has hit retail stores. The first collection that launched last April was a big success.

Following on the heels of its inaugural success, the fall 2016 collection includes active wear pieces such as cut-away tank tops, boxy shaped hoodies and t-shirts, oversized sweats, puffa jackets, bodysuits and crop tops. The collection draws inspiration from menswear items with a heavy nod toward layering and bold color blocking.

Prices range from $11 for accessories to $38 dollars for joggers. Ivy Park can be found in Topshop, Zalando, Selfridges, Net-A-Porter, JD Sports, Nordstrom, Hudson’s Bay, Zalora, Namshi, The Iconic Glue Store and Myer, as well as online.

Shame, shame, shame

Garment workers in Southern India are being forced into crippling debt due to starvation wages imposed by Dutch retailers. Workers are paid an average of 90 euros a month according to a survey done of 10 garment factories in and around Bengaluru in the southern Indian state of Karnataka.

Surprisingly many of the Dutch retailers that are paying such abominably low wages have acknowledged the importance of a living wage. The Dutch retailers in question include Coolcat, G-Star, The Sting, MEXX Europe, McGregor Fashions, Scotch & Soda, Suitsupply, WE Fashion and C&A.

“Workers cannot properly support their families with this wage,” said the report, “Doing Dutch”, co-authored by Clean Clothes Campaign, the India Committee of the Netherlands, Asia Floor Wage Alliance and Cividep India in a Reuters article.

“Food and housing, usually a one-room apartment without a water tap and with a shared toilet outdoors, are the biggest expenses. Almost everyone would like to buy healthier and more varied food, but is unable to do that because of low wages.”

The textile industry in India is a $40 billion dollar a year industry with most of its workers coming from Southern India. The Indian textile industry employs over $45 million workers.

“We expect garment companies to make a concrete plan for a living wage for all workers and to make sure that their procurement price enables the suppliers to pay a living wage,” Gerard Oonk, director of the India Committee of the Netherlands, said in a statement.

“Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles” and “Transformers'” Megan Fox has a new gig. Fox has been named co-owner, brand stakeholder, collaborator, and global ambassador to Frederick’s of Hollywood. These prestigious titles were acquired for Fox due her being represented by Authentic Brands Group (ABG). ABG acquired Frederick’s of Hollywood in 2015.

“Frederick’s of Hollywood is an American original and an iconic lingerie brand, known for its avant-garde, innovative designs and notable influence on pop culture,” said Fox in a recent fashionunited.com article. “I look forward to partnering with the ABG team to reintroduce this legacy brand to an expanded global audience through new creative and a revitalized approach to sexy lingerie.”

An Italian revamp

Like New York Fashion Week: The Shows spring 2017 there will be lots of big name Italian brands missing from Milan Fashion Week’s roster of fashion shows. Held from September 21-26, Milan Fashion Week will miss such key designers as Iceberg, Costume National, Damir Doma, and I’m Isola Marras.

To add more oomph to Milan Fashion Week this season, the President of the Camera Nazionale della Moda Italiana (CNMI, the Italian fashion chamber) Carlo Capasa has added more fashion parties, store openings and other fashion events and exhibitions. “We are planning more than 30 events, not counting the unscheduled ones, creating a host of socializing opportunities within the city. All these events will be crucial for the fashion week,” details Carlo Capasa.

Other added attractions this season will be the return of Krizia, Daizy Shely and Maurizio Pecoraro, the ready-to-wear line of Capucci, as well the anticipated return of the Lucio Costa brand, with the presentation of the ‘So Lucio!’ book, dedicated to the talented designer who died in 2012.

Many emerging brands—Lucio Vanotti, Piccione.Piccione, Ricostru, and San Andres Milano—will be showing on September 26, the last day of Milan Fashion Week. “My ambition is to make the last day the most important time of the fashion week. These brands are full of potential, and they must prove they have something to say without being hampered by major names,” said Carlo Capasa.

H&M Says Goodbye to Curvy

Thin is still in at H&M’s New York stores. Recently, H&M brick and mortar stores in NYC have decided to shelve its plus-size garments to make room for other H&M product such has home décor, accessories, and beauty products.

“H&M’s product range has grown in the past few years, with e.g. an extended sports offering, a new beauty assortment and our interior concept H&M Home. This means not all stores have room for all our fashion concepts. The assortment in the stores is evolving as we continuously assess the product mix, which is decided by each store’s specific pre-requisites when it comes to e.g. its size and the customers’ requests. We refer customers to our online store hm.com, which includes all our fashion concepts, and a broader assortment,” as reported in the Revelist.

H&M’s largest store is in NYC and its campaign with plus-size supermodel Ashley Graham is still running.

The minds of fashionistas are a fascinating mix of designer dedication and DIY. Take Fashion blogger, Blake Von D, who went into her closet recently and worked a long-sleeved denim shirt into a sexy summer top. She said she was “stretching” her wardrobe. She’s got what ESSENCE Digital Fashion/Beauty Director Julee Wilson calls “black girl magic”—that ability to build a unique look with whatever is within reach.

Blake Von D, who currently serves as Brand Ambassador for L’Oreal Paris and Shoe Dazzle, will be honored with “Chevy Street Style Maven Award” for her creative street style skills at the 3rd annual Essence magazine Street Style Block Party during New York Fashion Week. The event will take place at the Dumbo Archway under the Manhattan Bridge on September 10th.

“Street style is huge in fashion,” says Ms. Wilson, “and the women in the black community have a way of wearing fashion that ends up inspiring the whole world.”

The ESSENCE Street Style Block Party will feature a mix of music, fashion, art and culture, during the day-long event, featuring a live performance by singer Ayo Jay, a Nigerian singer/songwriter, who recently signed with RCA/One Nation, and has released a new video “Your Number” which is climbing the charts.

Last summer Beyonce turned heads with body-hugging an asymmetric-wrap pinstripe dress designed by Romeo Hunte, a Brooklynite, specializing in street style.  Singer/Songwriter Zendaya is among the celebrities, who love Hunte’s “tamed rebellion” style.  And, that is why he will be honored as the “Designer to Watch” at the event. Actress Naturi Naughton, currently starring in the Starz drama “Power” will co-host a live fashion show, featuring real women at the event, strutting their personal street style.

“It’s really great for us—the editors. We’re always working at our desks, but we want to get out and talk and laugh with our readers and admire their style.  We are so excited to meet them,” explains Wilson.

Local vendors and designer will showcase their wares, and “ESSENCE Eats,” a curated food truck will feed the crowd.  There will also be an interactive Kids Zone with face painting and more fun surprises

“Everyone loves it,” says Ms. Wilson, “it’s like having a family reunion.  It’s a perfect way to celebrate our style. It’s just dope.”
