Fashion Reverie’s 2020 Halloween Fun List

Halloweens that fall on Saturdays are rare. Not only will Halloween fall on Saturday this year, it will also fall on a full moon!  A lot of people are looking forward to this one. Alas, we are still in the middle of a pandemic. No trick or treating. No Halloween parties. For the first time in 47 years no East Village Halloween parade.

But people are finding ways to have fun. Zoom parties are all the rage now. They are a safe, socially distanced way to responsibly hang with friends. With that in mind, Fashion Reverie has rounded up some fun costumes, movie, and activity ideas for Halloween 2020.

Costumes

Debate Fly Wig

Did you watch the vice-presidential debate between Kamala Harris and Mike Pence? Well, if you didn’t watch the debate, one of the most startling aspects of the debate was the fly that landed on Vice President Mike Spence’s head and stayed there for some time, almost two minutes in fact.  Some pundits even compared the fly on the head to God’s wrath of flies on the Egyptian Pharoah. (Remember, Cecile B. Demille’s “Ten Commandments.) At any rate, the photo went viral and 3Wishes in response to this interesting phenomenon has produced a Mike Pence fly wig. You better purchase it quickly before they run out of stock.

Joe Exotic and Tiger Honey

A great idea for a couples’ costume is the Joe Exotic and Tiger Honey from 3Wishes. While the real Joe Exotic is serving 22 years in state prison, your Joe can sing loves songs to his tiger honey. You got to admit, Joe’s songs were genuinely catchy. During a Zoom party, you could have a stuffed tiger come in from off-camera to attack!

Carole Baskin

And of course, if Joe starts singing “Here Kitty Kitty,” well it’s time for Carole Baskin to appear. If she’s still on “Dancing with the Stars,” you can do the paso doble to “Eye of the Tiger” in your multi-colored animal print top and flower crown. Don’t forget to keep asking people if they’ve seen your husband.

Ruth Bader Ginsberg

After serving 27 years on the Supreme Court the Notorious RBG passed away at age 87. She was literally fighting until her dying day for the American people. She fought for LBGT, the disabled, and was tackling voter’s rights when she passed away. Once you have her iconic pearls, glasses, and tight bun, all you need is a judge’s robe and gavel to honor this pioneer in American law and civil rights.

Image courtesy of Robert Deutsch-USA TODAY Sports

Naomi Osaka

This nationally ranked tennis pro supported Black Lives Matter by wearing face masks with the names of black people murdered by police, like George Floyd and Breonna Taylor. A Halloween costume will be quick and easy. Don some athletic wear, carry a tennis racket, get a visor with the Nike Swoosh, and a face mask with a name on it. A black-owned, Esty shop (link provided) sells the masks you’ll need.

Black Panther

Revered actor Chadwick Boseman’s death from cancer at age 43 took everyone by surprise as he never spoke publicly about his diagnosis. Boseman wowed critics with his performances as James Brown in “Get On Up” and Jackie Robinson in “42,” but he’ll be most remembered as T’Challa from “Black Panther.” All you’ll need a black muscle shirt and a spikey necklace.

Looking for a quick cheap easy costume? Write “Blessing” in white chalk on a black t-shirt and wear a Groucho nose and glasses. What are you? A blessing in disguise! Write “Go Ceiling! GO!” on a tee shirt and carry some pom poms. What are you? A ceiling fan!

Movies

It’s just not Halloween without some scary movies! Nope, we can’t go to the movies this year, but a lot of people are having watch parties via Zoom.  You’ve got the candy, now get out the popcorn, the show is about to start!

“Tales from the Hood 3” – Hulu, VOD

This horror anthology series will release it’s the third installment this month, with four spine-tingling stories, each one from the minds of directors Rusty Cundieff and Darin Scott. This entry will focus on race-related stories, reminding us that simply being black in modern America can be truly terrifying.

“Host” – Shudder

If you’re setting up a watch party be careful to choose 2020 film directed by Rob Savage (cool name) as there are several movies with the same title. Hit the bathroom before you start or risk wetting the couch. This is one scary movie! Several people gather via Zoom to perform a séance failing to take it seriously until it’s much too late.

“The Cleansing Hour “– Shudder

Looking for some bloody gore and body horror? Father Max hosts “The Cleansing Hour” an online show that streams live exorcisms. Why yes, they do have merch! The show is completely fake. That is until a real demon decides to crash the party.

“Rebecca” – Netflix

Looking for a stylish psychological thriller? Check out this remake of Hitchcock’s 1940 Oscar winner.  A young woman played by Lily James (who is never given a name) is swept off her feet in a whirlwind romance marrying a charming Maxim De Winter (played by Armie Hammer). But after arriving at his windswept English estate finds herself haunted by the specter of his late wife.

“The Witches” HBO Max

Looking for some family friend fare? Based on a novel by Roald Dahl, Anne Hathaway stars as The Grand High Witch in “The Witches,” a role originated by Angelica Houston. A young boy visiting a hotel with his grandmother (Oscar winner Octavia Spencer) stumbles upon a coven of evil witches and gets transformed into a mouse! Can he stop their wicked plot?

With trick or treating cancelled this year, what activities can parents do with their young children?

  • Scavenger Hunt – Hide several plastic bags filled with candy (tightly sealed so they won’t attract vermin) around your house with riddles guiding players to the next bag.
  • If you have a backyard you can safely build a campfire, you can make smores! No backyard? A BBQ on a terrace could work in a pinch.
  • Kids love making and then consuming candy-covered gingerbread houses at Christmas. Why not make a Haunted house this year? Trader Joe and Target both sell kits for less than $10.
  • There’s always that old standby: light some candles, turn off the lights and tell ghost stories! An old camp favorite is “pass the story”. Everyone tells a portion a story and when they reach a climactic moment passes the story to the next person.

Banishing Seasonal Dry Skin

For some reason it seems that no matter how much we moisturize throughout the year, with the colder weather comes dry skin.  After years of constantly finding dry patches, you’d think we’d be prepared. But every autumn these skin woes seem to creep up on us.

To keep our skin as healthy as possible, especially as the temperature starts to drop, Fashion Reverie spoke with medical and cosmetic dermatologist Dr. Joyce Davis.

According to Dr. Davis, seasonal dry skin comes from a decrease in humidity in the atmosphere.  “Typically, we notice this at the end of summer, because summer is a humid time …” explains Davis.  “In the autumn the humidity drops abruptly, and our skin reacts to that and reflects it.”

Since we can’t change the weather, we need to change our skincare regime. “Ensure you apply lotion after a bath,” stresses Davis. “If you have been using a lotion, you may want to advance to something thicker like a cream or an oil which will be heavier and hold the moisture in, forming a barrier for your skin.”  When determining what type of moisturizer to use, you need to look for ingredients that hold the water in the skin, such as petrolatum, which is a popular option.  “Hyaluronic acid and lactic acid binds water and keeps it in the skin. Along with shea butter and other oils too, especially on dry areas like around ankles and the heels of the foot.”

You may notice when on your quest for the perfect lotion and serum that there are to be dozens designed specifically for one part of the body … foot creams, hand creams, face creams, and even booty creams.  Dr. Davis explains that while you need something a bit heavier this time of year, that there are different degrees of heaviness. Your face, for example, needs something a bit lighter than the rest of your body, like a serum, while your feet and bum might react better to a heavier lotion.

Now is also the time to really avoid drying products “… such as salicylic acid, glycolic acid or any glycerin cleansers, which are the clear soaps.  These are more summertime products.”  Davis also suggests avoiding acne products, as they also can be very drying.

Taking a supplement can also help keep your skin in tip-top shape.  Davis recommends Vitafusion’s “Gorgeous Hair, Skin and Nails” gummies that include Vitamin E, as well as adding more oils to your diet.  However, for faster results, Dr. Davis recommends more topical treatments to directly moisturize the skin.

Out of lotions and finding dry, itchy skin unbearable?  Davis says pretty much any cooking oil will help, so she recommends coconut oil as one of the best options to apply to your skin.

While dry skin might always be an annoying problem, these quick switches to your routine can keep it at bay.  So there’s no need to stress over that crisp air; you can keep glowing and feeling comfortable in the skin you are in.

Editors’ Picks: Fashionable Money-Saving Tips that Are Good for Your Wallet and the Environment

2020 is one for the record books and things are tough all over. Many people are experiencing some painful financial struggles, and the fashion industry has been hit particularly hard. With that in mind, Fashion Reverie has put together a list of products that will save you money and, in some cases, are kind to the environment.

Beautiscoop

One dirty little secret of the beauty industry is how products are packaged. Often, containers are specifically engineered to make it difficult to get the product out. This forces consumers to saw open plastic bottles and realize there is still 5 more days of moisturizer in them. But what can you do if your container is hard plastic or glass?  Beautility’s Beautiscoop will get every last drop of your beauty products out of the container easily and retails for a mere $9.99 (before shipping). If you use high-end department store products, it could pay for itself the first time you use it.  AUTILITY™, Beauty on Purpose™, recoup BEAUTISCOOP™.

Bluapple Producer Freshness Saver Ball

What’s the most expensive food? Someone might say caviar or filet mignon, but the most expensive food you buy is the food you don’t eat—food that goes from the shopping bag to the fridge to the garbage. Bluapple Balls absorb ethylene gas given off by fresh produce, extending the life of your food three times longer than normal. The refillable balls last about three months and cost around $15. It can save you hundreds.

Sunbeam Heated Fleece Throw

Remember when you were a kid and you tried to turn up the heat and your mother yelled at you to put on a sweater? Well, this autumn when we will most likely still be stuck at home, a quick and easy way to cut fuel costs is to use a heated throw rather than turning up the heat. Another advantage? You and your honey can snuggle underneath it together to generate even more warmth.

Home Depot Tool Rental

Have you ever needed say a drill to install some shelves, so you buy an electric drill and then proceeded to never ever use it again? Why buy a drill when you can rent one for a fraction of the price?  Home Depot offers a multitude of tools and equipment for rent. Oh, and that drill you haven’t used since 2016? Sell it online.

Clothes Drying Rack

Using a drying rack in your home can dramatically reduce your energy bills. Clothes racks themselves cost between $20-$40 (or less if you find one used) and can save up to $200 per year in energy costs. But energy isn’t the only thing you’ll save. Do you ever wonder what lint is? It’s your clothes falling apart very slowly. Dryers in particular can eat up delicate clothes. Using a dryer rack can dramatically extend their life span.

Wool Dryer Balls

But what if for practical reasons a dryer rack simple isn’t an option? Here’s another easy way to reduce your energy bill. Wool dryer balls are a fantastic all-natural way to soften your clothes, eliminate static, and reduce energy usage by drying your clothes faster. Wool dryer balls work by bouncing their way in between layers of wet clothing that would otherwise stick together. The separation of the layers of clothes allows warm air to dry your clothes more quickly.

Makeup Eraser Cloth

Do you buy those makeup remover wipes? Not only can they clog up landfills (and your toilet if you try to flush them), but the chemicals used in them can be very drying for your skin. Makeup Eraser cloths will remove your makeup with nothing but water and in the long run, will cost considerably less than a plastic tub of wipes.

S’well Stainless Steel Traveler

Bottles of water can run around $2 at a typical convenience store. Not only that, but the plastic from the bottle and the fuel required to transport it adds up and negatively impacts the environment. Filling up your own water bottle at home will cost pennies and reduce waste. The S’well traveler can keep water cold for up to 26 hours and hot for up to 11. The wide opening can accommodate ice cubes and makes for easy cleaning.

Thinx Underwear

While this will require an initial investment, over time period panties will save you money as you can avoid buying pads and tampons. Additionally, it will save you money on dry cleaning (and big embarrassment) when tampons leak. If you need another reason, it will keep pads out of landfills and eliminates worries about tampons clogging your plumbing.

Blew Razor Blade Dryer

People often think that repeated use is what dulls a razor, but it’s the oxidation of the metal. Blew Razor Blade Dryer dries your razor to prevent that oxidation and keeps the blade sharp. The device even sanitizes the blade with a UV light to prevent infection. If you use high-end razors, it will pay for itself within a few months and save considerable money over the course of a year. Additionally, it will keep dozens of disposable razors out of landfills where they injure wildlife or sanitation workers.

Leave items in your online shopping cart

With so many of us shopping online, the competition for customers is fierce. One quick easy way to save a few bucks is to do your shopping online then log out before buying. After a day (or maybe two) you’ll probably get an email that says something like “Hey did you forget something?” and that email will often be accompanied by a coupon code to entice you to complete your purchase. There’s no guarantee, but it never hurts to try!

Beauty Alert: Eyetitude Keeps Your Eyes Bright

If you live in an area where the temperatures are beginning to dip and the leaves are falling off the trees, you may be suffering from fall allergies. And though there are prescription medications and a ton of over-the-counter remedies for red, puffy, itchy eyes due to seasonal allergies, most of them only work on one or two of signs of seasonal allergies. And these products do nothing for fine lines and wrinkles.

As some of the COVID-19 restrictions start to relax in some states, who wants to be seen with tired, puffy, red eyes. You not only want to appear bright-eyed and bushy-tailed; you also want to minimize the appearance of wrinkles and fine lines—which may have increased due to the stress of self-sequestering.

Eyetitude has an array of product that not only reduce some of the redness and swelling but can also minimize wrinkles and fine line. Think “eyes” and “attitude,” meaning windows to soul, as a reflection to what going on with us on the inside.

Founder Tricia Morris has created a brand that contains smart formulas that a pH balanced for maximum absorbability, while feeding the fragile eye are hydration and restorative ingredients. The three products that Fashion Reverie likes best—and yes, we tried them all out, is NoCrowZ Retinol Eye Cream, EyeZ-luronic Serum, and FixZer Instant Eye Repair.

NoCrowZ Retinol Eye Cream – Don’t let the creamy texture fool you. Behind this advanced strength pro formula there’s cutting-edge technology that allows delivery of retinol and other supportive ingredients deep into the skin targeting fine lines and wrinkles.

EyeZ-luronic Serum – This formula containing key ingredients Hyaluronic Acid and Japanese tea extracts is perfect not only for your eyes, but for the anti-aging concerns of your face, neck and decollete. As the serum generates cell turnover for stronger firmer skin, you feel silky smooth.

FixZer Instant Eye Repair – If you only have time for one product, this is it. This must-have instant (let me say that again), INSTANT eye repair will reduce inflammation and puffiness, minimize dark circles and fine lines while delivering a brighter, lifted appearance.

It is officially fall. What a year it’s been, and we’re not even done yet!

Either way, there are errands to run, people to see, and outfits to be seen in! The COVID-19 pandemic may have slowed things down, but it hasn’t completely stopped fashion. Even though many of us have not gone shopping for new fall wardrobes, there are still some autumn fashion trends to look out for.

Trends to Expect from Digital Fashion Weeks

Images courtesy of pantone.com

Just like the rest of the world, New York Fashion Week (NYFW) is adjusting to a “new normal,” thanks to the coronavirus pandemic. With the majority of this seasons’ fashion designers presenting their collections via computer screens and smartphones rather than live runway shows, fashion brands may now have to adapt their collections and design aesthetics to fit a digital audience. What might translate well on the runways may not always translate as seamlessly in a digital campaign. And though fashion weeks in London, Milan, and Paris are going forward with more in-person shows compared to New York, many designers are still opting for digital presentations in those markets as well.

The trends that editors, stylists, and customers can expect this year will be a little different. Fashion Reverie has curated some potential trends that you should be on the lookout for this Fashion Month.

Bras that Pass as Shirts

With people having less of a reason to dress up, and work from home expected to continue for some companies through 2021, the bra as a shirt trend could be here for a while. 2019 became the year that celebrities re-energized the bra as shirts trend before it even had a chance to really hit the runways. Now, as consumers opt for comfort or luxury style, the trend is making its presence known.

Heavily Patterned Face Masks

Designers are cashing in on the new essential fashion accessory, face masks. Of course, high fashion designers on the fashion week runways won’t be expected to produce your standard neutral-colored face masks or mundane cloth masks. Expect designers to give us everything from maximalist patterns, like florals and diamond prints, to bejeweled sequin fabrications.

Statement Earrings

Designers are focusing more on accessories that can work those who choose to leave the house and those who are sequestering and communicating via Zoom and WebEx. Enter big statement earrings—a great look for those who live in places where they can be out and about, and still great for those safely working from home and trying to make a fashion statement on a video call.

Statement Choker Necklaces

Trends from digital fashion weeks continue to be about the accessories.  Designers can be expected to create statement choker necklaces to help customers accessorize and accentuate from the neck up. The headshot has never been more valuable than in a world where digital conference calls are the new water cooler hangout spot.

Oversized Handbags

These days, your purse has to hold more than your standard wallet, phone, and keys. Everything from spare face masks, hand sanitizer, and disinfecting wipes have become part of the morning purse check before you leave the house. Designers are expected to accommodate for these extra needs with XXL-sized handbags that will have both the usual compartment for your cell phone and room for a Costco-sized bottle of hand sanitizer.

Camp Shirts

Somehow, out of the fashion trends that emerged during the COVID-19 lockdown, the one that might be the most surprising is camp shirts. Camp collars have long been a part of leisurewear, but with the options from neutral colors to bold patterns they come in, a lot of people are loving this shirt more than before. As people are more casual with fewer days spent in an office, the camp shirt has become the relaxed trend that we may flock to.

The Shirt Vest

The menswear vest, sometimes referred to as a waistcoat, is finding popular traction again. The trend originally came about in the mid ‘00s thanks to Kate Moss, and has recently been seen on the runways of Saint Laurent and Victoria Beckham. The vest-as-a-shirt’s return to glory was brought on by an increased need for comfort and a simple piece that can be dressed up for a digital meeting or dressed down for your walk in the park. The shirt vest is poised to be the next spring/summer wardrobe staple.

Righteous Reds

Red is one of the first colors that stands out to the human eye. At the recent digital fashion shows in Milan and Paris, many designers from Casablanca to Etro worked to incorporate red in some form into their collections. Red is an attention grabber whether it’s on video, at a physical presentation, or in a photo. Red also adds some fiery flare to spring/summer collections from the runway to your wardrobe.
