Celebrity Style – More Than a Touch of Velvet

Velvet, known throughout the centuries as one of the most luxurious fabrics in both texture and drape, has been raising its distinctive head on celebrities and red carpets for the last couple of season. Traditionally worn by nobility, in the tenth century velvet emerged in the Middle East by first being introduced in Baghdad during the rule of Harun al-Rashid, and later emerging in Florence, Venice, and Genoa.

In the modern era velvet is shown in a variation of garments in intense colors created by the intricate use of light and shadows. Although the extravagant fabric is predominately seen throughout the holiday season, in this current incarnation celebrities have chosen to incorporate velvet into their fall wardrobe.

Sarah Jessica Parker channeled her inner “Carrie Bradshaw” this season by making a velvet blazer a wardrobe staple piece. No stranger to color, she opted for tailored blazers in emerald green, black and eggplant. From cocktail dresses to designer jeans, Parker shows immense versatility with velvet.

Ideal for formal garments, velvet hangs elegantly and conforms to curves. A beautifully constructed velvet dress is both appealing and elegant for black tie occasions. Kim Kardashian opted for form fitting velvet looks from the finest designer houses. In a refreshing twist, Kardashian’s choices range from a floor sweeping gown to a black pantsuit with a plunging neckline.

Bottega Veneta, Dolce & Gabbana, Balmain, and Gucci introduced the most innovative velvet designs for the red carpet this season. It’s not unexpected that a fabric so enthralling would be chosen by the seductive Angelina Jolie. Despite remaining committed to classic black, Jolie keeps her selections interesting by opting for a Swarovski crystal bodice and thigh high slit.

Whether celebrities decide on tailored blazers, chic pant suits or glamorous gowns, velvet continues to reign supreme.
