Do fashion designers and creative directors of fashion brands still sketch? In an era where technology and innovation is moving and evolving all industries very quickly to better modes of production many fashion pundits ask if sketching has outlived its time.

Many fashion designers and industry professions would contend that sketching collections as a process tool is not antiquated. When designers put pen to paper, or in some cases stylo pen to I-Pad, fantasy and creativity takes flight. And Fashion Reverie, true to form, has the sketches from three design teams that proves sketching is still a relevant and necessary tool.

Nautica is one of the most sought-after shows during New York Fashion Week: Men’s (NYFWM). For their spring 2017 collection, the tailored traveler inspired Nautica’s design director Steve McSween. McSween has been the vice president of menswear global design since 2014 with his first collection debuting for spring 2016. And since his ascendency Nautica menswear reach, scope and design aesthetic has been directed to a menswear appeal that incorporates a more global arch.

“The texture of colours in the still heat of the Arizona desert inspired this season’s journey,” explained Brett Johnson of his spring 2017 collection. In his second season at NYFWM, Brett Johnson, scion of BET founder Bob Johnson seeks to expand his design aesthetic to include more bold color and a more varied masculine silhouette. While his debut collection at NYFWM was well attended and well received, Johnson is now looking to push his brand’s DNA beyond the urban aesthetic seen in previous collections.

David Hart is a fashionisto’s favorite during NYFWM. From collections that were inspired by Miami nightlife of the 50s and 60s to New York City jazz clubs, for spring 2017 Hart collaborates with Hart Shaffner Marx , as well as produces his eponymous line for spring 2017. “The Spring ’17 collection for David Hart x Hart Schaffner Marx is inspired by the iconic environmental photography of Slim Aarons.  From palm prints to colored linens, the collection is reminiscent of escapes to the Maldives, Mustique, Palm Beach, and Provence in the 1960s,” details David Hart.
