The 90s supermodels are back!! But not in a music video or documentary.

Naomi, Cindy, Linda, and Christy are gracing the covers of Vogue’s and British Vogue’s upcoming September issues.  Styled by the iconic Edward Enniful and photographed by Rafael Pavarotti in New York City, these runway legends, who are all in their 50s, look incredible. Naomi is 53, Linda Evangelista is 58, Cindy Crawford is 57, and Christy Turlington is 54,

The cover for the September issue was shared on Instagram. And there were several comments about 90s supermodel Claudia Schiffer missing from the lineup. There were also comments about the supermodels’ images perhaps looking too retouched.

The Vogue September issue Instagram issue was accompanied by a quote. “In the late ’80s to mid-’90s, high fashion went from a niche aspirational hobby to a pillar of mainstream entertainment—and at the center of this transformation were Christy, Naomi, Cindy, and Linda, whose rare combination of extraordinarily photogenic features, born-with-it confidence, quick wit, intuitive style, intense curiosity, and utterly bananas work ethic flipped the switch for the industry,” the caption reads. “And the lights have never gone off.”

The editorial images are accompanied by a must-read article by Sally Singer. The article details the 90s supermodels’ rise to fame, adjusting to changes in the fashion industry and how they have stayed relevant for over 30 years.

Trouble at H&M

Polyester breakdown

For sustainability advocates, the fabric polyester has been anathema to the recycling and sustainability movement. The challenge has been separating cotton from plastic, the two main combinations that make the blended polyester fabric.

Well, young chemists at the University of Copenhagen have come up with a breakthrough solution that can make polyester recyclable. “The textile industry urgently requires a better solution to handle blended fabrics like polyester/cotton. Currently, there are very few practical methods capable of recycling both cotton and plastic—it’s typically an either-or scenario. However, with our newly discovered technique, we can depolymerise polyester into its monomers while simultaneously recovering cotton on a scale of hundreds of grammes, using an incredibly straightforward and environmentally friendly approach,” explained the young chemist from the University of Copenhagen.

“We can take a polyester dress, cut it up into small pieces and place it in a container. Then, add a bit of mild solvent, and thereafter hartshorn salt, which many people know as a leavening agent in baked goods. We then heat it all up to 160°C and leave it for 24 hours. The result is a liquid in which the plastic and cotton fibres settle into distinct layers. It’s a simple and cost-effective process,” said Shriaya Sharma, a doctoral student of the Jiwoong Lee group at the department of chemistry and study co-author.

Currently, the breakthrough solution has only been used in the lab, but there is a lot of potential for applications outside of a laboratory environment. The young chemists have already been in contact with businesses that explore the possibilities of taking the solution to the industrial level.

Layoffs at Hearst

As temperatures continue to rise this summer and we struggle with trying to stay cool, so is Hearst struggling to keep employees. It appears that Hearst Corporation has cut 41 employees from its publications as of Thursday. These layoffs add to employee layoffs at National Geographic, ESPN and Grazia magazine.

Hearst’s 41 employee layoffs come mostly across Cosmopolitan, Seventeen, and Elle magazines. A Forbes magazine spokesman said that the layoffs were the result of “making strategic decisions that position the business for long-term growth.”

The company restructuring translates into the layoff of Seventeen editor-in-chief Kristin Koch, who will leave her post in September. According to the Hearst Magazines Media Union wrote on Twitter: “Due to ‘company restructuring,’ we are losing talented people whose creativity and institutional knowledge is immeasurable […] We are disappointed and angry that Hearst unilaterally chose to lay off our members instead of coming to the table to explore alternative options.”

“In my teen and college years, I fell in love with the Blumarine brand and aesthetic—it was the ultimate in feminine, aspirational fashion to me. I remember lusting after Blumarine advertisements. Naomi back in the news

Naomi Campbell continues to be in the news. This time her newsworthy story is not about her family but details her partnership with the Boohoo Group-owned fashion label, PrettyLittleThing (PLT).

Campbell has had a long-standing relationship with former PLT CEO Umar Kamani. Kamani stepped down from his position at PLT earlier this year but was crucial in acquiring Campbell for her partnership with PLT.

PrettyLittleThing by Naomi Campbell will “intertwine the essence of PLT with Naomi’s unique style, promising a fashion experience like no other,” as stated in fashionnetwork.com. So far, this is the biggest collaboration for PLT.

While Campbell usually affiliates herself with brands that have a much bigger price point, PLT does align with Campbell’s many charitable efforts. PTL recently launched a swimwear line with a cancer charity and has launched a campaign that addresses sexual assault on women.

Out with the old

If you have been noticing the commercials about the new season of “The Real Housewives of New York City” (RHONY) that have been airing on Bravo recently, you will notice some interesting things. The old cast has been replaced by Sai De Silva, Ubah Hassan, Erin Dana Lichy, Jessel Taank, Brynn Whitfield, and Jenna Lyons. Now though this new cast was announced in late 2022, the commercials around the revamped RHONY started appearing this week.

I was just exhausted.”

Lyons admitted on the “Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon about being cast on “RHONY,” “[It’s] not the most, like, natural career change, I know.” The new season of the revamped “RHONY” premiers on July 16 on Bravo.

Footwear heaven

Collaborations in fashion are still the order of the day. The most recent fashion collaboration is kind of two unlikely bedfellows; however, what is likely these days?

Footwear giant Skechers and rock icon band The Rolling Stones produced in partnership with Bravado, Universal Music Group’s merchandise and brand management company are collaborating on a range of trainers and slip-on shoes. According to fashionnetwork.com, the pieces feature the band’s trademark tongue logo (in single or repeat designs) on a collection for women and men. One shoe also features song lyrics on its laces.

“For six decades, the Stones have endured like no other—rebelling, conquering and being listened to by billions. Nearly every adult on this planet knows their iconic logo,” said Michael Greenberg, president of Skechers, as reported in fashionnetwork.com. The shoes will be available in stores in the US and the UK on June 22, as well as the Skechers website.

Though Chloe representatives have confirmed Hearst’s departure, it is believed that Hearst wants to leave and concentrate on her eponymous brand which has been funded by LVMH over the past few years. Ryan and Ken

Martha Stewart made a lot of heads turn by recently gracing the cover of Sports Illustrated Swimwear edition. Well, Ryan Gosling is also making heads turn as he graces the cover of GQ’s 2023 summer edition.

Ryan Gosling’s GQ cover is the perfect lead-in for the new “Barbie” movie which hits movie theaters July 21. Interviewed by GQ staff writer Zach Baron, Gosling talks his controversial casting as Ken in “Barbie.” I would say, you know, if people don’t want to play with my Ken, there are many other Kens to play with,” he tells GQ. “It is funny … this kind of clutching-your-pearls idea of, like, #notmyken. Like you ever thought about Ken before this? … But suddenly, it’s like, ‘No, we’ve cared about Ken this whole time.’ No, you didn’t. You never did. You never cared. Barbie never f***ed with Ken. That’s the point. If you ever really cared about Ken, you would know that nobody cared about Ken. So, your hypocrisy is exposed. This is why his story must be told,” stated Gosling, as reported in dailyfrontrow.com.

In this very rugged, cowbo-inspired GQ cover and editorial, Gosling is styled by George Cortina and photographed by Gregory Harris.

A pride-less Target

Customer backlash is causing Target to remove some its LGBTQ Pride merchandise. Target exhibited its Pride Collection in the beginning of May. Target’s Pride Collection included more than 2,000 products which included books, clothing, music, and home products.

Target has been celebrating Pride Month for over a decade. Up until the monthof May there had been very few complaints about the LGBTQ merchandise in stores. “The criticism has been widespread,” Target spokesperson Kayla Castaneda told Reuters, calling the withdrawal of some products “adjustments.”

“Folks are reaching out with feedback … and while some are sharing it with constructive criticism, they disagree with product decisions that we made,” she said, as reported in fashionnetwork.com. “Given these volatile circumstances, we are removing merchandise that is the target of (customer) ire,” Castaneda said regarding the scrutiny for its association with British designer Eric Carnell.

This year there have been several confrontations in Target stores over the Pride Collection with some customers complaining, even pulling merchandise off the shelves, and throwing Pride Collection merchandise on the floor. The products that seemed to cause the most uproar is merchandise that had a transgender overtone.
