Bridal Beauty Trends Straight from New York Bridal Week from Spring 2024 Season

New York Bridal Week is well known for being a fantastic place to scope out all the most amazing wedding dress trends, but it’s also the perfect spot to discover bridal beauty as well.  If you’re planning your upcoming nuptials and want a fresh bridal look, be sure to save this list to share with your makeup artist!

Watercolors

We all have that image of the blushing bride in a long white dress on their wedding day.  Gowns made in shades of ecru and ivory lace, makeup soft and romantic … the only real pop of color might be a hidden blue garter as the traditional “something blue.”

While we adore a classic, if you’re a bride that’s not afraid to mix things up, there are so many ways to incorporate a little color into your wedding look.  This season, designers including Badgley Mischka, Ines di Santo, and Anne Barge showed off gorgeous dresses in hues of blue, violet, and lilac for spring 2024, featuring both fabric and hand-painted florals, tiers of tulle, and ruffles, which provided subtle touches of spring hues, as well as full-on pastel-colored gowns.

If you love a touch of color but a baby blue or purple dress is a bit too modern for you, add the colors to your makeup.  Cassandra Garcia, Global Pro Artist for Bobbi Brown at Ines di Santo’s, took inspiration from the gorgeous colors of the collection; however, you could recreate this stunning eye and wear it with any bridal ensemble.  Garcia created a “watercolor eye” for a monochromatic romantic style using Bobbi Brown’s eyeshadow in Heather.  “This is perfect for the bride who wants to dip their toe in color. It’s soft and subtle,” explains Cassandra Garcia.

Add a little Shine

Beads and sequins are a great way to incorporate a little glitz, whether it be on the dress’ bodice, part of an amazing scalloped, crop top, 2-piece set, such as the amazing one Sachin & Babi designed or on a fun accessory, such as a stunning hood like at Cinq.

However, even if your dress is lacking in sparkle, a good highlighter is the perfect way to add that subtle reflection to your complexion for a lit-from-within glow.  At Sachin & Babi, Rhona Samuels and Rafael German with Valentino Beauty, focused on giving each model a little extra radiance with Valentino’s V-Lighter.  According to German, V-Lighter is a must have on your wedding day as it’s a primer and highlighter in one.  “It literally reflects light without being shiny. So, it will mattify, but will also blur all the pores, blur all imperfections, and correct redness.”

Samuels stresses that it also contains hyaluronic acid for continuous hydration “… you can put a little bit into your moisturizer … You can use it on the décolletage, and legs. You can mix the two together [for the perfect hint of shimmer.]”

While you can tone down the glow, a very strong highlighter also looks amazing for any bride.  The models at Badgley Mischka wore a very iridescent highlighter for maximum radiance. However, for an extra shimmery touch, metallic shadows were swiped across their lids for a beautiful modern and high-shine bridal look.

Keep it Casual

Gone are the days of runways filled with French twists and stiff, complicated up-dos.  Now it’s true that brides have been trending towards relaxed hair for a while, but this season the simpler the better. The spring bride is all about casual elegance, whether it’s wearing their hair down in loose waves or in the perfect stunning messy bun style.

Want to add a little something extra? Use strands of hair (real or extensions) to create braided headbands for additional interest in the hair like they did at Anne Barge.  Another idea is to add flowers, Fashion Reverie loves the gorgeous Cherry Blossoms tucked into the models’ buns at Reem Acra.  Flowers are an easy way to bring feminine touches and update a basic style.

Pretty in Pink

While pink wasn’t reflected much in the wedding gowns or accessories for the spring 2024 bridal season, shades of pink were unsurprisingly incorporated into almost every beauty look.

From the most traditional pink blushes for that flushed look to simple, demure pink manicures.  However, this season to add a soft elegance, many designers opted for pink eyeshadows to complete their bridal looks. According to Samuels, pink is the go-to shade for eyeshadow for brides right now.  At Sachin & Babi, Samuels used Valentino’s color flip in the pink shade, but stresses the fluidity of a perfect blush into that perfect pink shadow.  “You can use the primer on the eyelid and put a little bit of the blush on top, which is eye to cheek. And you can create that soft but very feminine look on the eye without looking so harsh,” Samuels suggests.  And for the perfect pink blush, German recommends mixing Valentino blushes in Numbers 1 Born in Rome and 3 for the perfect wedding day flush.

Classic or modern, it’s important that you wear whatever makes you feel beautiful!  After all, it’s your day!

Editor’s Picks: Seven Sleek Outfit Options for Spring Weddings

Weddings celebrate love and devotion to that very special person. That said, weddings also celebrate the union of two families. And when invited to a wedding, whether as a guest or a member of the wedding party, it’s important to pay attention to your outfit. As wedding season starts this spring and invitations start to find their way to you, it’s important to have a few items you can pull out of your closet. Most of the time you’ll find that dresses are what’s recommended to you for these formal events. However, if you’re someone that prefers to buck the trends, opting for a pantsuit or sleek romper is another great option.

As tree blooms take hold in many parts of the country, natural or floral tones are a great option for colors. In this article on the most highly covetable spring wedding dresses, we focused exclusively on the colors of pink and blue. Each of these options were popular on the spring 2023 runways for this season and with the upcoming “Barbie” movie, pink has become a color that no one can get enough of. These colors are great for every skin tone, but if you are interested in a different hue, these items come in several color variations.

Below are the top seven items that Fashion Reverie is confident should be in your closet—and maybe packing into your suitcase if you end up on a couple’s trip to Vegas.

BEBE Strapless pink bandage gown, $259

Apart from the bandage material of this hot pink dress, the silhouette is timeless and elegant. Just check the wedding invitation carefully before wearing this one or consider if your host might wear it. While it is well-covered and stunning, the bodycon silhouette can be too much for conservative church and family members. If other’s opinions worry you or a cold breeze is enough to make you shiver, this dress does pair well with cropped jackets or a loose shawl.

Hutch Sabrina Strapless V-Neck Pleated High-Low Gown, $280

Anthropologie’s designs never cease to amaze. This pink hue is perfect with Barbie-core on the rise again. With the high-low design and pointed cups of the bra, this dress has a sharp design that is extremely attention-getting. Apart from the rich color and silky fabric, the pleats dropping from the waist in a high-low design accentuate the female figure to make you feel beautiful.

Banana Republic Italian Blue Wool Suit, $270

Whether the wedding is outdoors or indoors, the sky-blue wool of this suit is a tone that easily compliments various backgrounds. Soft, subtle and a perfect piece for layering the vest style of the top makes, this is a great go-to when it comes to events in warmer months of the year.

Child’s Tutu du Monde dress, $129

It never hurts to have an idea of what your child is going to wear to the wedding ceremony. If you happen to be stumped on how to find an item that is playful, elegant, and still suitable for a child, this option from mytheresea.com is a great choice. The shimmering dress has multiple tiers of tulle that makes it fit for a princess.

Lulu’s Give It a Twirl Blue Metallic Sleeveless Tiered Maxi Dress, $89

Why must nice dresses always cost so much? This is the question that the online boutique Lulu’s answers. Two dresses on this list come from their site. The ‘Give it a Twirl’ dress is a rich blue with multiple tiers of metallic fabric. It is not exactly what you would call simple, but it’s a fun, playful option. Almost the adult version of the BEBE child’s tutu except for the difference in fabric and richer tone, these dresses could be a prime mother-daughter photo opportunity.

Lulu’s Beyond Exquisite Gown, $98

Just under $100, this beautiful gown is sure to make a statement without upstaging the bride. Available at Nordstrom’s, this dress is an item that could be worn again. Made with two color variations, the metallic dress is a loose column dress with a thigh-high slit and V-neck top to give a hint of sexiness without giving it all away!

Images courtesy of the respective brands

BEBE Illusion mesh panel wide-leg jumpsuit, $138

Not in the mood to wear a dress? Culturally that is no longer a problem. Apart from the suit on the list, this jumpsuit is the choice to make when you don’t want to float around in a dress all day.

Still chic and feminine, the mesh design makes the garment more appealing. The rich black tone also sets this garment apart from the others on this list. Perhaps you can say it’s to mourn your friend getting married; however, add a few pops of color and you won’t look like Wednesday Adams.

The Best Bridal Shoe Trends for Spring 2023: Chat-in with Shoe Designer Vanessa Noel

For the past few seasons, bridal shoe trends have been heavily slanted towards the razzle dazzle and extremes.  And when it comes to embellishments, the more pearl and crystal detailing, the better!

White shoes were noticeably absent but gold and silver options were aplenty as were clear PVC “Cinderella” heels in lieu of the classic white shoe. That said there is a shift in the air with a renewed focus on classic designs such as modern versions of the streamlined white satin pump fashion icon Jacqueline Bouvier wore to her Newport Rhode Island wedding to John F. Kennedy in 1953.

Fashion Reverie turned to Vanessa Noel, who has been one of the bridal industry’s preeminent wedding shoe designers from the time she began designing bridal shoes at the start of the 1990s. Already a red-carpet favorite, her decision to branch out into bridal was a calculated one.

The decision to delve into bridal footwear paid off with legions of brides flocking to her for the most up-to-the-moment and beautiful shoes on the market. To this day, discerning brides who want luxurious fashion -forward shoes turn to Vanessa Noel for the perfect shoe that reflects their lifestyle, from a classic pump for urban girls, to white satin cowboy boots for Aspen brides and committed horsewomen.

Vanessa Noel shared four shoe trends her brides, who are shopping for their spring/summer 2024 weddings, have been clamoring for and scooping up.

Trend 1: Pumps – The Classic Pretty Choice. “For my brides, there is a very marked return to the classic coming in and it’s back to a pretty shoe. The pleasing silhouette of a pump with pretty and whimsical embellishment is a favorite.” The “Zenith” fits the bill, a forties retro wrap around style with a tasteful sprinkling of crystals around the ankle.

Trend 2. Platforms – The Thick 3-inch-High Heel. “Younger brides are favoring destination weddings and are lusting after a very high platform strappy sandal.” Tops in this category are Noel’s white satin platform with a Swarovski crystal buckle, and the “frisk,” a high heel platform crystal cage sandal with a white satin bow detail at the back of the ankle. For minimalist brides, the “Dover,” a silk satin cross-strap high heel platform is the perfect choice.

Images courtesy of Vanessa Noel

Trend 3. White – It’s Always Right. “Brides come to us desperate for a white wedding shoe; there’s an abundance of gold and silver in the market, but very little white to choose from.”

Continues Noel, “If you’ve committed to getting married in a white or cream gown, what looks best is a shoe that matches.” This could be an option as simple as the elevated silk satin “jet set” lug sole docksider for sporty brides who love sailing, to the “Apollo,” a mid-calf white boot with a detachable gladiator style crystal shin guard for those who want a modern twist on the Greco-Roman goddess look.

Trend 4. Toned-down Embellishment. Noel notes a turn away from the “more is more” embellishment trend that has consumed the bridal market for the past few years. “It’s all about placement—where the embellishment is; a shoe is not a cake.” She notes that a pretty shoe that enhances the foot and the leg with well-placed touches of crystals is far more flattering than a shoe that boasts more embellishment than shoe.

The beauty of the shoes that fall into the four trends outlined above is that they are “forever” shoes, ones so beautiful that they could be kept and passed on to the next generation. Brides planning their 2023 weddings have everything to look forward to when shopping in the coming months for themselves and their bridal party.

Beauty Alert: What’s In and What’s Out for Spring 2023

Fashion Reverie spoke with the top hairstylists and makeup artists to get a handle on what trends are passe and what to do to update your look for spring. With so many trends the one piece of advice nearly every expert wanted to pass along is, when in doubt, just keep it simple!

Out: Baking Your Skin

In: Cloud Skin

“Baking has a time and a place, most of the time it’s not required.  It’s really for the stage.” explains Nick Luhan, lead artist for Kevyn Aucoin backstage at New York Fashion Week (NYFW) who instead recommends a lighter, more natural cloud application.

To get the look, Luhan recommends starting off with a beautiful complexion and a really lightweight skin tint, before applying powder.  “Then you’re going to use a small fluffy brush and you’re going to work the products really good into the bristles.”  Kevyn Aucoin’s Duet Blush Brush is Luhan’s favorite for this.  “You’re not going to bake with it. You’re not going to pack it on thick,” Luhan explains. “You want the brush to almost look like there’s nothing in it and then you just gently press and roll it into the complexion. So, it’s just a really sheer application versus really packing it on. Then you flip the brush over, and you dust it off. So, it’s really allowing the skin to really be its beautiful radiant self.  We’re not packing on that powder and muting it down anymore.”

Out: Overly Done Perfect Hair

In: Effortless, Grungy and Casual Styles

Jon Reyman of Spoke & Weal Salons, Lead Guest Hairstylist for Aveda created individual bun/ponytail hybrids for the runway, bringing that casual look onto fashion’s main stage. “This season, grungy has been a story, kind of rock and roll-ish, but also quite glamorous,” Reyman explains.  “It’s a lot of graphic hair, a lot of done hair … really chic, but there’s this juxtaposition of edge and grunge, sort of rockery.”

Images courtesy of pexels.com

Out: Extremely Fluffy Brows

In: In-between Brows

Fluffy brows had a moment, alright a big moment.  However, according to makeup artist Molly Ganster, lead artist with New York Makeup Academy, “Fluffy brows are still staying, but they’re not as fluffy as they used to be. Everyone is asking for fluffy but tame.”  It’s still a statement, but a much more subtle statement now.

Out: Hard Contour

In: More luminous natural skin

“It’s really been about a nice, fresh complexion—very natural just enhancing [your] own features,” shares Aveda, Pro Makeup Artist Maria Livingood.

Cassandra Garcia, Lead artist for Bobbi Brown also agrees, “I love to see fresh skin. So, the less is more approach is for me, nothing too much.”  Garcia explains that makeup is ever evolving, but really loves that Fashion Week is embracing natural.  “I love that each model is individual. We really get to let the skin shine through, too.”

Out: Super Lined Lips

In: Celebrating Your Natural Lips

Ganster stresses natural is in this season and to skip overly lined lips.  The focus is no longer on making your pout bigger but celebrating what you have and keeping [your] lips more realistic.  Ganster kept lips more natural backstage at Homolog, instead focusing on giving each model a nice blush, resulting in a pretty look that wasn’t overly done.

Out: Exaggerated Edges

In: Playing Up Natural Textures

“Natural. It is all natural,” lead hairstylist Jorge Luis explains.  Sharing how much [he is in love] with all the natural textures on the runway and on the streets, too.  “It is all effortless. Chic, natural, beautiful hair… the wet pieces stuck to the forehead, I’m so over that.  It is time to move on …”

“I’m seeing a lot of natural hair, which I love, I think the story for me with like consumer side is like, let the hair be… just let it be,” Reyman explains. “Put a good product in, let it air-dry or diffuse it, but don’t overdo it.”

Reyman also loves natural hair because it is better for your hair.  “Heat damage, mechanical damage, chemical damage … I think hair health is such a big conversation right now. So, for me, I support [natural].  I mean I am backstage with all the models and their hair is destroyed because they’re going from show to show, and hairdressers are just pushing [their hair] as far as it can go.”

And if your hair needs a little help before you’re ready to embrace your natural texture, whether it be straight, curly or something in-between, Reyman recommends everyone starts by minimizing damage—make sure your irons and blow dryers aren’t too hot—and then using a product that supports the hair, such as Aveda’s Botanical Repair Bond Building Styling Cream, a vegan award-winning cream that repairs strands from the inside out, while smoothing frizz at the same time.

Out: Short Plain Nails

In: Long, Sparkly Stiletto Nails

Long nails have been dominating the runways, especially the stiletto style categorized by its thin pointy look.  According to Pattie Yankee, celebrity nail expert, “right now I’m seeing a lot of stilettos … However, it’s all about long lengths this season, as well as a lot of nude shades with sparkles.” To get the look, start with a long nail and apply a nude base with a touch of shine or a full-on glitter topcoat.  One gorgeous shade from Yankee’s own namesake collection, Have a Little Faith, which is a shimmery peachy shade, was very popular backstage and incorporated in many of Yankee’s gorgeous creations including her updated Aurora Nails created for Pamella Roland’s latest collection.

Out (kind of): Red Lips

In: Mauve Lips

While the red lip will always be a classic, Livingood explains that this season it’s more mauvy, more natural and more nude.  She’s loving these more natural shades for a fresh look for spring.

Out: Long One-Note Strands

In: Short Hair and Bangs

TRESemmé Global Stylist Justine Marjan loves a fresh cut for spring.  “We’re seeing a lot of short, really cute haircuts, bangs and face framing pieces. More individuality with your haircut.”

Also add some accessories! This season it’s all about adding a little something extra; bows, scarves and flowers are great adornments for any haircut.  “We’re kind of in an era where anything goes,” shares Marjan.

Fashion Reverie loves these tips from the experts, but all of them agree … at the end of the day there are no rules!  Wear whatever makes you feel your very best.

By blending the rich culture of the Halo gaming franchise with the ultimate comfort found in Wolverine’s shoe, this collaboration is making a return. This time around, the theme behind this collection and collaboration is Spartan-inspired, taking its cues from the Spartan’s armor and the customization option in the Halo universe.

Editors’ Pick: Run DMC and Burton Collaborate on Two Collections

Around this time of year, people from all over the country travel from warmer areas to hit the slopes and enjoy the snowy conditions the winter months bring. Last month, a new entry to the ski category carved its way into the market, thanks to a collaboration between hip-hop group Run DMC and Burton.

For those not in the know, Run DMC is an OG (original gangster) hip-hop group from Hollis, Queens. Their collection with Burton, itself the originator of the world’s first snowboards, kicked off Feb. 9, and features a limited-edition run of snowboards, boots, bindings, outerwear, streetwear, bags and other accessories.

It became available for purchase Feb. 15 for the Mine77 x Run DMC collection. The second collection became available for purchase Feb. 22nd for Burton x Run DMC.

The idea and inspiration came from a tightly bound friendship rooted in passion for snowboarding, according to George Burton Carpenter. He worked on the collection with TJ and Jesse Mizell, the sons of the late Jam Master Jay of Run DMC. All of them share a love for the winter sport. The Burton x Run DMC collection is an homage to the legacy of Carpenter’s father, Jake Burton, founder of Burton Snowboards, and Jam Master Jay.

“The Burton x Run DMC collection breathes life into the legacy of our fathers, or as the world knows them,” Carpenter said. “Through this collaboration we carry on their legacy and amplify the connection between hip-hop and snowboarding. The designs remain true to our heritage while evolving the style and culture that we intend to pass on for generations to come.”

This collaboration is meant to bridge the gap between cultures and strengthen the connection between hip-hop and snowboarding. It celebrates the evolution and style that Run DMC brought to hip-hop and what Jake Burton brought to the world of snowboarding. This collection includes pieces inspired by Run DMC’s signature look, like the high contrast Run DMC Frostner Jacket, a throwback hip pack, and a Process snowboard that features a portrait of the group as base and topsheet graphics.

The Mine77 x Run DMC collection embodies hip-hop and snowboarding’s intertwined history of performance and culture. The bold pieces—like the Gore-Tex Tracksuit, as well as hardgoods featuring turntables and tape cassette graphics—look good but are also built to last.

Top Beauty Trends from New York Fashion Week Fall 2023

This season it’s all about easy, natural beauty looks with just a dash of “cool.”  While the models at New York Fashion Week (NYFW) have a team of expert makeup artists, hairstylists, and manicurists to make sure every pimple is covered and every hair is in place, these understated styles can easily be done at home.  All the experts we spoke to agreed that this season it’s about enhancing natural complexions, following the texture of your natural hair, and playing with nude manicures (with just a touch of something extra).

Fashion Reverie has rounded up our top tips from the New York runways so you can recreate them yourself—no beauty team needed!

Metallic French tips

Nude nails with a metallic tip was a staple at top collections, including Cucculelli Shaheen and LoveShackFancy!

“It is about Radiance. The radiance of darkness turning into light… and finding a light in the dark, Explained” Pattie Yankee, lead nail artist and owner of the Pattie Yankee line of polishes.  “We wanted a shiny, metallic tip to be the light at the end of like the darkness … a continuation of their skin [that extends] into light.”

Rather than painting on the tip, Yankee and her team applied Dashing Diva Magic Press press-on nails to each fingertip.  They then matched each model’s skin tone with a Pattie Yankee lacquer and applied that, leaving the chrome tip uncovered for an updated French manicure. “We just painted over it to the match the skin and so it had a little bling at the end,” Yankee explained.  Also sharing that the same nude shade was also applied on their toes for a very clean, basic pedicure.

Similarly, LoveShackFancy also featured a golden tip.  Lead artist and KISS Brand Ambassador, Gina Edwards used KISS Voguish Fantasy French Design press-on nails, which complemented the brands, girly-with-an-edge collection.

Bibhu Mohapatra fall 2023 backstage image courtesy of Janine Silver

However, shades of gold were found in other subtle manicures, too. At Bibhu Mohapatra, Pattie Yankee created metallic scribbles to represent the writings of Nancy Cunard, political activist, heiress and writer, who’s poem “Wheels” really inspired the designer on a deep, personal level.  Yankee and her team used Have a Little Faith, a shimmery shade from her own line topped with golden abstract scribbles.  “We wanted to create a nude that wasn’t a boring nude,” Yankee states while explaining that we will be seeing a lot more variations on a sparkly, long, nude nail.

Low ponytails

This minimalist style appeared on dozens of runways, proving that sometimes less is more.  Dennis Basso celebrated his 40th year in fashion with a collection featuring fur coats and lots of gold from shimmery mini dresses to the finale number, a gold gown with a long cape worn by supermodel Beverly Johnson … and very simple low ponytails with side parts. Similarly, Malan Breton also showcased a collection featuring a lot of metallic elements and simple low ponytails, again with side parts.

Son Jung Wan fall 2023 backstage image courtesy of Janine Silver

However, at Song Jung Wan, lead stylist Jorge Luis, created center parted, low ponytails with knots on the side, to add a little fun to the look. Wanting to keep the focus on the clothes, Luis explains, “I always try do something off the face, so people would not miss any detail of the clothes, because at the end of the day it’s all about the clothes.”  However, not wanting just a plain ponytail, Luis wrapped strands of the models’ real hair around the ponytail and tied it into a series of small knots, reminiscent of the friendship bracelets that were popular at summer camps. These ponytails might be simple but are anything but basic.

Smoky eyes are back

Growing up in the late 90’s early 2000’s, no one was talking about cut creases or contouring—the staple look was the smoky eye.  With the return of so many 90’s trends, it’s no surprise to see many designers asking for the look to complement their collections.

At Veronica Beard, lead artist Romy Soleimani with Bobbi Brown created a very alluring look by smoking out chocolate shades from Bobbi Brown’s Golden Nudes Eye Shadow Palette and the Long-Wear Cream Shadow Sticks in Cinnamon, Bark and Golden Bronze.  “It’s a lot of rich browns. It’s very sultry.  It’s a little bit wet on the lid and there’s a nude lip. It just feels very seductive … very sexy,” explains Soleimani.  To balance the eye look, brows were kept soft, and pouts had a swipe of Bobbi Brown Luxe Lipstick in Beige Dew.

Dennis Basso also featured a smoky eye created by Marylisa Diaz-Aronsen Artistic Director of Makeup at Julien Farel Salon.  “The look is very soft, earth tone eyes, smoky, sexy, but not strong lines,” she explains.  The look is complemented with dewy skin, half lashes, and pinkish neutral lips with a touch of gloss.

Glowing pale pinks

Reds might be rocking the runways in terms of clothing, but pinks aren’t going anywhere, anytime soon.  Nowhere did we see lots of pink—both in the makeup and in the collection itself—than at LoveShackFancy.

Cassandra Garcia, lead makeup artist with Bobbi Brown is all about the pink.  “The two shows I’m leading actually have a nice pink lip. I think everyone’s looking for something fresh and pretty and bright. Which is fun,” Garcia shares.

At LoveShackFancy, “it’s a really pretty pink blush to the cheeks, a lit from within glow, and we paired it with a matte lip color to kind of balance the glow in the matte … “Garcia then added a beautiful black winged liner to complement both the rest of the look and the clothes as well.

Bobbi Brown Boss Pink Luxe Matte Lip color was then applied, “we just pressed it on with our finger. So, it looks like almost like a powdery finish, which is nice, because it’s that luxe matte finish. It gives you that powdered look,” Garcia explains.

The rosy hue was continued onto the cheeks with a highlighting powder to match each model’s complexion and then of course. Bobbi Brown Pot Rouge in Pale Pink which is a glowing cream blush. “So, whether it’s a pink glow, or an apricot glow, or a bronze glow, we matched it to the girls’ skin color and then pressed the Pot Rouge on top to keep that glow,” Garcia explains.

Done/Undone hair

Aveda Guest artist, Jon Reyman of Spoke & Weal Salons, created not one, but two perfectly done/undone looks backstage at Veronica Beard and LoveShackFancy.

For LoveShackFancy, Reyman was going for this “kind of Kate Moss 1990/2001 just lived in, kind of dirty, grungy, cool look … It’s done, but not done, heroin chic (minus the heroin).  It’s healthy, party at night and wake up and have cool girl hair.”  To get the look, he prepped the hair with Aveda Pure Abundance Style Prep to give the hair that late 90’s texture.  The hair was then dried with the Dyson blow dryer and waves were added with the Dyson Corrale. “Then we added some texture cream and a little of the Aveda Control Force to give some definition and to help support that lived-in look,” Reyman shares.

At Veronica Beard it’s about simplicity.  The first look, “it’s pulled back, like they did it themselves.  Each girl is unique … we wanted it to be as if each girl knew what they were doing, but didn’t want to look like they knew what they were doing,” Reyman explains while describing the ponytail bun hybrid which he secured with Aveda control force firm, holding hairspray to make sure it stayed put, without looking too stiff.  The pony/bun hybrid has gone from a doing-the-dishes quick-up-do to a red carpet staple, seen on many celebrities, the most photographed being Kim Kardashian who wore the look to Milan Fashion Week last season.  However, Reyman was able to make each girl look fashionable and composed and as he put it, “done, but undone, but done …”

Not every model had their hair up, though.  “For the natural girls, we really are pushing for the natural curl and texture, because we love it so much … we just love to see hair being it’s natural, beautiful self,” Reyman says, while discussing the second look at Veronica Beard.

When it comes to picking a new beauty style, if this season teaches us anything, it’s to keep it light, keep it fun, and keep it natural!

On the Runways at New York Fashion Week, Everyone Is Just Winging It!

Bold, dramatic, and perfectly precise—the strong winged eyeliner has made a triumphant return to the runways of New York Fashion Week (NYFW) fall 2023 season. From edgy and angular to softly curved and reversed, modern takes on this iconic makeup look have been seen across a range of collections, from LoveShackFancy to Son Jung Wan. Adding a touch of edge and glamour, the strong winged eyeliner has proven to be a versatile choice for designers looking to make a statement on the runway, and a trend that is sure to inspire makeup lovers everywhere.

At LoveShackFancy, lead makeup artist Cassandra Garcia with Bobbi Brown created a look that was all about balancing pretty with a touch of edginess.  “The look is a really pretty pink blush to the cheeks, really a lit-from-within glow and we paired it with a matte lip color to kind of balance the glow …” Garcia explains.  Then she added the beautiful black winged liner that was “crisp and perfect” to give a bit of an edge. The liner was used to complement the clothing, which featured dresses and tops in shades of pink with unfinished edges, bows, ruffles, and beading.  Additionally, the collection featured jackets, sequin pants, miniskirts and floral dresses in shades of cream, gray, black, and different metallics, which kept true to creative director Rebecca Hessel Cohen’s vision of “unabashed femininity and strength.”

To complete the look, Garcia added a couple of coats of mascara that gave a bit of volume without being clumpy, keeping the overall effect fun and playful. For those looking to recreate the look, Garcia recommends grabbing a favorite pink lip color, using it on the cheeks for a quick and easy flush, and then creating a nice crisp winged liner with any black eyeliner, whether it’s a gel eyeliner or a pencil. Garcia also recommends using a Q-tip for that perfect winged shape.

Nick Lujan, lead artist for Kevyn Aucoin, brought his unique touch to the runway at Cucculelli Shaheen, with a beautiful, winged eyeliner and luminous rose gold makeup look. “We know winged liner from the ’50s. We know winged liner from the ’60s, and now certainly in the 2000s, winged liner has taken a new shape and form,” Lujan explains.

Drawing inspiration from the radiant beams of light as the sun sets, “It’s all about that glowing skin. Really, really light foundation, we want to see the models’ skin through the makeup … and then that winged eye.” To achieve this look, Lujan used Stripped Nude Skin Tint for the foundation, as well as Glass Glow on the high points of the cheek, a main staple in all his runway looks.

But the star of the show was definitely the winged eyeliner, which Lujan describes as an “understated fierceness.” He notes that the shape of the winged liner has evolved over the years, and this latest trend is “more elongated, more pulled out, for a siren eye mixed with a little bit of the fox eye that was popular a few years ago.” To round out the look, Lujan applied a highly reflective rose gold eyeshadow powder (which he mixed with a little bit of rose water) for a metallic and slick effect to pair with the winged liner.

Unsure how to get the perfect winged liner yourself?  Lujan also struggled for years and shares his tips for achieving the perfect winged eye. “When you’re working in scenarios like this, you want to balance the eye at the same time as you’re doing the winged eyeliner application. So, step one on one side, step one on the other side. Don’t try to make one perfect wing [on one eye] and then recreate it on the other side, it’ll never happen. You’ll drive yourself insane” Lujan loads his go-to liner brush with product, the Duet Definer brush—which has a lip brush on one end and an angled brush on the other end, then stamps right in the center of the eye.  He then dips his brush in more product and connects the inner corner to the middle.  Next he connects the outer corner to the middle.  “No wings, just the classic line.  After that point is done, you can apply your wings by looking straight into your mirror, which I think nobody does, they always stretch or close.  But just looking in the mirror, with your eyes open makes it so much easier, because you can see the angle you’re creating … and it’ll be a lot more symmetrical,” Lujan explains.

If you’d like to try a new twist on a winged liner—look no further than Son Jung Wan’s fall 2023 show.  We caught up with lead artist, Marc Reagan to discuss the inspiration behind the reversed wing. Reagan shares that they wanted to bring in elements from the collection, such as different color palettes and textures, and create an icy, flushed, “coming in from the cold” feeling that felt modern and not just an average blush.

To achieve this, Reagan infused peachy tones into everyone’s complexion and used a white liner on the lower lash line to create the pièce de résistance, a white wing on the lower lash line bringing that element of iciness. By flipping the typical extension on the eye, creating it from under instead of on top, Reagan brought a unique twist on the classic wing.  To pair with the eyes, lips and cheeks had the same tones, and showcased a blurred lip line for an effortless look.

In terms of trends at NYFW, Marc noted that there was a white liner moment with many artists incorporating white makeup into their look. However, Reagan made sure to make it purposeful and work with the overall look.

Winged eyeliner has been a makeup staple for decades, but the latest trend spotted on the NYFW runways takes this classic look to new heights. Featuring a crisp, dramatic wing that extends past the outer corner of the eye, the modern wing gives a bold and edgy vibe to any makeup look. Overall, the winged eyeliner trend is a must-try for anyone looking to add some low-key intensity to their look. And with these tips, achieving the perfect winged eye has never been easier.

NYFW Beauty Trend Alert: Forget Glazed Donut Nails, There’s a New Nail Trend for 2023

While Glazed Donut nails had their moment, we’re calling it now—2023 is the year of the updated Aurora Nail!  Taking on an almost iridescent quality, the new Aurora Nail represents a pretty take on the swirling Northern Lights. It’s easy to recreate at home, even if you’re terrible at doing your own nails and highly customizable to fit your own color palette.

Inspired by Pamella Roland’s fall 2023 Aurora collection at New York Fashion Week (NYFW), Lead Nail Artist and founder of the Pattie Yankee brand, Pattie Yankee created mesmerizing nails to bring Roland’s inspiration to life.

“These are really, really easy. You don’t have to be perfect.  You can be messy and swipe them and put the colors any which way you want; whatever shades you want to use to create it,” Yankee shares.   For example, if you wanted a more blue or green nail, you could switch the order of the colors for a nail that resembles the green shades, which are more prominent in the Northern Lights in certain areas of the world.

To get the look from the runway, Yankee started by applying her own line of press-on nails, Patty Yankee Inspire 24 DIY Pre-Glued Clear Almond Nails (available at Sally Beauty and PattieYankee.com) Of course you could create this look on your own natural nail as well, but her press-ons are a great alternative (and perfect if you have trouble painting with your non-dominant hand, since you can create the look and then apply it!)

Regardless, if you use a press-on or your own nail, start by applying a clear base coat over the nail.  Think back to painting with watercolors.  If you apply the color to a dry canvas, it will make a sharp line; but if you soak the canvas beforehand, the colors will spread out into gorgeous patterns.  You want to make sure you don’t skip this step to ensure your nails have that magical, celestial vibe.

Next, Yankee lightly streaks four shades from the Pattie Yankee polish line onto the wet base coat.  The colors she used are Flower Power, a soft pink, Unbothered, a pastel blue lavender, Heavenly, a sky blue, and Abundant Life, a mint blue green.

“We wanted to mainly focus on the pink shades, so I started making light streaks of pink in the middle,” explains Yankee who knew Roland was a fan of a pink nail.  On either side of the pink, she lightly applied a little of the purple shade, followed by blue on the edges and just a tiny dot or two of green. (Yankee applied a small dot on the top right corner of the nail and the bottom left corner.)

Don’t worry about making straight lines or pretty swirls; the beauty is in the blending.  Once you have the colors how you’d like them, apply a sheer, shimmery polish on top of the wet nail, dragging the colors together.  Yankee used Have a Little Faith, a peachy shade with a touch of sparkle, again from her own line at Roland.  “It just all blends together and looks like the Northern Lights,” Yankee exclaims.

One helpful tip when recreating the Aurora Nail, is to make sure to have something to clean your brush between applications, Yankee shares.  Then once the nails are dry, Yankee added one more coat of Have a Little Faith to add a little more shimmer and then a topcoat.

However, an Aurora Nail doesn’t need to be pastel. Yankee also loves the look in darker shades and shared some sample nails perfect to wear for the next few months!  So, make the Aurora Nail your own and be sure to share your creations!  We’d love to see them!
