Editors’ Pick: Mercer Amsterdam Sneakers’ Spring 2020 Collection

Can a fashion brand be inspired by New York City without being based in New York City or even in the US? Of course, that’s possible. And Dutch footwear designer Pim Dresen has done just that.

Pim Dresen bought his first pair of sneakers in New York City when he was 10 years old. And he purchased those sneaks on Mercer Street. Years later when Dresen launched his luxury sneaker brand he combined the names of his hometown, Amsterdam, and where he bought his first pair of sneakers.

Since the launch of  Mercer Amsterdam, the luxury sneakers have been worn by Future, Bella & Gigi Hadid, Lewis Hamilton, Chadwick Boseman, Lady Gaga, Common, Quavo Huncho, Roddy Rich, Steve Aoki, Chris Brown, others. And was the first footwear brand to collaborate with Pinatex, the first fully sustainable vegan sneaker made from pineapple leather. Additionally, Mercer Amsterdam has made a name for itself with its many collaborations with NASA.

Images courtesy of CLD Style

Mercer Amsterdam’s latest line boasts pastels, neutrals, and hints of neon! The W3rd Suede Flame Multi is by far one of the most original designs for a shoe that one has ever made. For this sneaker the brand merges pastel purple with neon yellow, separated by black flames sprinkled throughout the side of the shoe. The W3rd Vegan 3M Race shoe is ideal because it can easily go from the basketball court, to a night out with your buds. Last, the Jupiter Ponyhair Zebra sneaker is a must-have for any guy that’s coupled up. The unisex style isn’t only an eye-catching design for him, but cute enough for her, too.

NYFW Fall 2020 Editors’ Essentials

New York Fashion Week (NYFW) is almost here. And sandwiched in between all the fashion shows and presentations, brand parties and events, there are fashion editors—slowly becoming a dying breed—that are shuttling from show to show, and event to event.

Whether this is your first NYFW or your 30th, you still want to look your best. Which is hard to maintain with your fashion plate stuffed to the max with shows and events. You also need to have all the necessary essentials to get you through your day. There is nothing worse than having your cell phone die or looking wretched and ragged because you haven’t had time to charge your phone or touch up your look.

Fashion Reverie has curated a short list of things that keep you fashion ready throughout this very hectic week. Though you may not be strutting down a runway, you still want to look your best and perform your editorial duties to the best of your abilities.

Every male editor needs a great bag to hold all the stuff you will need throughout the day at NYFW and nothing looks for chic and sophisticated than Il Bisontes men’s crossbody and messenger bags. And as the name implies there is a bison logo embedded into the fine Italian leather.

Originating in Florence, Italy in 1970, Il Bisonte was borne out its founder, Wanny Di Fillippo’s affectation for the American Bison and the Wild West. Di Fillippo believed, If I can draw them … I can also manufacture them.” And Fashion Reverie testifies that there is nothing better than a bag made of Florentine leather.

It is so important to stay hydrated during NYFW. However, it is equally important to stay centered and calm. NYFW is extremely hectic and can really make havoc on your energy levels and your state of mind.

Zodica Perfumery mindfully combines astrological traits, aromatherapy principles, and seasonal cues to express the vibe of each sign through scent. Zodica Perfumery makes finding your fragrance soulmate as easy of as love at first sniff.

Nothing is worse during NYFW than having your cell phone die. Remember, during NYFW you are constantly taking pictures of garments, and you need your phone to pull up your seat assignments to various shows. If you cell phone dies out, it could be disastrous for you.

There’s also a standard USB-A port that charges more slowly. And its a find at just $24 from amazon.com.

NYFW is all about functionality. Still, it is important to look good. And nothing sets you a part from other industry professionals than a fashionable bag.

Flaunting one of Hester van Eeghen bags will make you all the rage at NYFW. And another plus, you will be making a great fashion statement.

NYFW can be really tiring, particularly with the men’s starting three days before the women’s shows, cumulatively adding up to 10 days of shows. That said; you will need a product to get rid of dark circles and eye puffiness.

Editors’ Pick: For HANH MERRIMAN Necessity Is the Mother of Invention

It is not uncommon for a designer to create a brand based on what they like to wear or would want to wear. Ralph Lauren, as revealed in the documentary “Very Ralph,” created a tie brand because he couldn’t find the kinds of ties he wanted. Donna Karan created an entire fashion legacy based on clothes that she wanted to wear. And Diana Vreeland created the “wrap dress” according to her needs a young working mother.

Vietnamese designer Hanh Merriman has done something similar. Growing up in Vietnam, Hanh Merriman had no concept of fashion design, pattern making or even ready-to-wear clothes. “When I was growing up in Vietnam there were not a lot of fashion design opportunities. Things are different there now. Back in the day, there was no ready to wear. You would go to the tailor and the tailor would make clothes for you. I had no concept of pattern making or designing clothes. There were no malls or retail, ready-to-wear clothes, everything was made by a dressmaker,” explained Merriman.

HANH MERRIMAN Fall 2019

Still, that lack did not suppress her love of fashion. And in Vietnam, Hanh would express her love of fashion through garments that were unusual and unexpected. “I love things that are unusual; I also love asymmetrical cuts and designs. Even back in Vietnam I would ask the dressmaker to make asymmetrical garments for me. That was 40 years ago. I wanted things that were off-the-shoulder with triangle and rectangular cuts. That was very weird for style in Vietnam at that time. I believe that fashion should be fun. I always wanted something that was different from what everyone else was wearing.”

After moving in the US in 1994, Hanh became noted through her fashion and travel blog, Life in Travel, for her innate sense of style. Even famed photographer the late Bill Cunningham was seduced by Hahn inimitable sense of style. Hahn was even featured in Vanity Fair’s International Best Dressed List, as well as in local publications DFW Style Daily, D Magazine, and Dallas Modern Luxury.

HANH MERRIMAN Fall 2019

However, being a style maven was enough for Hanh. She wanted something more. And she discovered what that more was when she decided to update her wardrobe and couldn’t find the kinds of clothes she wanted. Starting with just 10 looks she designed, Hanh started to get lots of compliments on her clothes at the many events she attended in Dallas. “Everyone asked me about these looks and wanted to know where they could purchase the garments. Everyone told me that I should have my own fashion line, and they would buy the clothes. This gave me a lot of confidence to launch my own fashion line. I took the risk and now here we are two years later.”

That said; Hanh Merriman’s collections are designed for that women who wants to stand out in a crowd, who is also ready for something different. “My customer is very brave and loves fashion and is not afraid to express themselves through what they wear.” And brave and confident she must be. The perfect pairing of pop and restraint is how Hanh Merriman defines her brand’s aesthetic. The women’s ready-to-wear collection is composed of edgy and bold, yet elegantly restrained pieces, which are defined by fine fabrics and the perfect fit.

This juxtaposition of elegance and edginess is perfectly expressed in Hanh Merriman’s spring 2020 collection which is both elegantly timeless and boldly fashion forward. In other words, in as the great fashion editor Diana Vreeland would say, “now and next.”

HANH MERRIMAN spring 2019 images courtesy of Seventh House PR

I took a trip with my family to the Southwest—Utah, Arizona, and some cities in California. I was inspired by the rock formations that I witnessed in the Southwest and just the calmness of life in the Southwest. In my spring 2020 collection I use a very calm color palette composed of pale and deep blues, beige, white, and a deep orange which relates to the rock formations,” explains Merriman.

Out of necessity a unique and fashion-forward fashion line has emerged. And in just under two years, Hanh Merriman has expanded to designing for someone other than herself. Well, maybe unconsciously she always was. Whether designing clothes for just herself or herself and other women, Hanh Merriman has tapped into what modern women want to wear, and it is time for the entire fashion industry to stand up and take notice!!

Editors’ Pick: Ruthie Davis x Disney’s “Frozen 2” 2019 Holiday Capsule Collection

Even though Fashion Reverie has already published our Holiday 2019 fashion collaborations, we just couldn’t leave out footwear designer Ruthie Davis’ collaboration with Disney’s “Frozen 2” sequel, timed to be available with the launch of Disney’s animated feature “Frozen 2.” No stranger to Disney’s powerful female characters, Ruthie Davis has had a three-time hit with her Disney Princess collaborations with Jasmine, Snow White, and Mulan.

“This is an exciting collection as it is inspired by not one but two incredible sisters: Anna and Elsa.  They each bring their own voice and journey to the designs, so we broke the collection into two distinct groups—one more Anna inspired and one more Elsa inspired” shared Ruthie.

Comprised of six styles—the Frozen II holiday capsule collection—embodies the voices of “Frozen 2’s” Anna and Elsa, the shoes, like Anna and Elsa, are larger than life. Comparable to the journey we experience the film’s heroines take as they evolve with courage and confidence, Ruthie Davis designs shoes that make women feel optimistic and empowered throughout their own journeys in life.

“I was very much inspired to design this collection as it is very sensory involved” said Ruthie Davis. “You can feel the icy temperatures, see the incredibly rich and multi-dimensional forest hues, touch the soft luscious materials and hear the swirling Nordic wind spirit. This group of shoes is designed to take you away to a faraway mythical place that is exquisite and otherworldly.”

Editors’ Pick: adidas x MISSONI Vol. 2

Unless you’ve been sleeping under a rock, you are aware that fashion collaborations are all the rage. And when it comes to footwear, particularly sneakers, without an alignment to fashion brand, celebrity or sports figure a sneaker brand could go the way of the pet rock!! (In case you were not born in the 1970s, the pet rock was an American cultural phenomenon of smooth rocks from Mexico that were marketed like another version of man’s best friend. By the way, they are still around, but do you know anyone who owns one.)

Converse resurrected itself from a cultural desert by collaborating with the likes of Chinese fashion designer Feng Chen Wang, author Jerry Lorenzo, tattoo artist Dr. Woo, fashion designer J. W. Anderson, hot fashion brand phenomenon Off-White, and Yoon and Ambush. And that was in 2019 alone.

Adidas definitely will not be out done by Converse of any sneaker brand to that effect. Adidas has had successful collaborations with Pharrell Williams, Kanye West, and Jeremy Scott. Add Virgil Abloh of Off-White and recent collabs with Prada and Adidas is positioned to have their sales go through the stratosphere. (Well, they already have!!)

Images courtesy of MISSONI/C&M PR

In this second collaboration with Missoni, the iconic Italian knitwear house looks to expand on the knitted Ultraboost sneaker which has become a cult favorite. With sport in the house’s DNA and following the path of its founder Ottavio, an Olympic athlete with a passion for color, the adidas x MISSONI partnership interprets sportswear in a contemporary way; redefining classic running garment silhouettes, and transforming colors into a living matter that follows and frees movements.

Energy, strength and agility are emphasized and enhanced with form fitting pieces, all brought to life in iconic Missoni colors; the new Pulseboost sneaker has been perfectly engineered. And the campaign images and video further expand on the MISSONI’s synthesis of color, movement, energy and fashion-forward sensibility.

adidas x MISSONI Vol. 2 are now on sale and can be purchased online or in select MISSONI stores.
