For the spring 2020 and the ensuing fall 2020 season, consumers will witness a return to the roaring twenties. Vintage is expected to dominate the upcoming fashion seasons with streetwear aesthetics continuing to be prevalent—despite Virgil Abloh’s predictions. There’s a new generation of designers set to define the new decade, and here are Fashion Reverie’s picks.

Christopher John Rogers
Christopher John Rogers is the most recent winner of the Vogue/CFDA Fashion Fund, giving him the stamp of approval of Vogue editor-in-chief Anna Wintour herself. The Hollywood stylist set is loving him, and he’s been dressing red carpet celebrities, including Lil Nas X and Ashley Graham. The designer is part of a rising crop of black fashion designers that are finally earning their due.

Marine Serre
At just 26 years of age, in 2017 Marine Serre scored the coveted LVMH Prize. This also helped her acquire new retail partners, including Dover Street Market and Joyce. After interning for Sarah Burton at Alexander McQueen and Raf Simons at Dior, Serre acquired a junior designer position with Balenciaga under Demna Gvasalia. Serre has found a cult following for her sportswear infused styles.

Avoc
Designers Laura Do and Bastien Laurent were the 2017 winners of the coveted ANDAM Prize for their Avoc label. Their gender-neutral label is on trend for a growing microcosm of gender fluidity fashion.

TRE by Natalie Ratabesi
A nominee for the CFDA/Vogue Fashion Fund, Natalie Ratabesi’s line TRE by Natalie Ratabesi can already be found at Bergdorf Goodman and Saks Fifth Avenue. The designer is also finding a growing cohort of editors and stylists who have fallen love with the brand. You can start expecting to see her garments in a lot more fashion editorials and on red carpets.

At 22 years of age, Reese Cooper has accomplished so much. He’s already shown at New York Fashion Week and Paris Men’s Fashion Week, garnering the attention of top editors and stylists. Charles Jeffrey
This young designer, who graduated from Central Saint Martins in 2017, has found a burgeoning following for his campy, maximalist designs. The designer is known to collaborate with London artists and drag queens for his colorful collections.  Ssense and Farfetch carry his bold designs that have become known for their intricate details.

Phoebe English
Phoebe English completely rejects the concept of fast fashion. Her eponymous brand is made entirely in England in small quantities with very close attention to detail. After graduating from Central Saint Martins, English was awarded the L’Oréal professional prize which helped her jumpstart her career and position her brand as one of British fashion’s most beloved emerging fashion brands.

Matty Bovan
Look out world, here comes the new king of camp. Matty Bovan’s avant garde styles are virtually costume worthy, and he takes maximalism to a whole new level. Since 2016, Bovan has been described as a designer London loves. He loves to make a statement, so expect to keep hearing plenty about him.

Arthur Arbesser
Viennese Arthur Arbesser became a finalist for the LVMH prize in 2015 for his eponymous label, and from 2017 to 2019 he was the creative director of Italian brand Fay. The designer has a penchant for patterns. His playful approach to patterns has been described as beautiful and has earned him rage reviews from top fashion critics.

Kalmanovich
Although fashion designer Julia Kalmanovich started her label back in 2009, only recently that it has found more traction outside of Russia. The designer has found a celebrity following that includes Hailey Bieber, Katy Perry, Chrissy Teigen, Constance Yablonsky, Lena Perminova, Natasha Osmann, Ravshanа Kurkova, and Marusya Zykova.

Seven Fashion Predictions for 2020

The fashion industry is one of the most peripatetic industries. In fact, the only constant in fashion is change. And surviving the vicissitudes of fashion is a feat within itself. This is not an industry for those stuck in certain patterns or ways of doing things.

Perhaps, the biggest evolutions in fashion have happened in the last decade. From the advent of social media to the proliferation of e-commerce and the demise of brick and mortars to the seeming embrace of diversity, the fashion industry is experiencing a seismic shift.

That said; there are opportunities to predict what changes the industry will experience in 2020. Fashion Reverie always has its fingers on the pulse of change and evolution.

The Return of Brick and Mortars

Brick and mortar stores have been the bedrock of retail since consumers started going to stores as opposed to relying on seamstresses and family members to make their garments. With the market proliferation of e-commerce stores, it seemed that consumers—particularly young consumers were opting to shop online rather than spend their dollars in brick and mortars.

This lack of retail traffic has prompted many brick and mortars to close stores or reduce the amount of brick and mortars. According to businessinsider.com, in 2019 alone, over 9300 brick-and-mortar stores closed—this includes Payless, Dress Barn, Charlotte Russe, The Gap, Chicos, Forever 21, and Sears stores, in addition to many others.

This woeful shuttering of brick and mortars has had a deleterious effect on retail. Still, there is a silver lining and rays of hope!! Fashion Reverie associate editor Kristopher Fraser in his article “How Generation Z Is Shaping the Future of Retail,” extensively details that Gen Z has more brand loyalty than millennials, mix and match high-low fashion, and are more apt to shop at physical stores.

Fraser’s article further explains that Gen Z is looking for experiential shopping and retailers that are expanding along that trend are not only attracting Gen Z; however, keeping them as consumers. Additionally, Gen Zers see brick and mortars as a way to disconnect from social media and apps and have a real, physical experience as opposed to a virtual experience.

A More Expansive Definition of Masculinity

Thirty years ago, it was rare to see men wearing very fitted slacks, bold, colorful sneakers, lots of arm bracelets, or skirts. Those looks were reserved for women or men that were fashion risktakers.

The times they are a changin’. Young male consumers now not only wear very fitted pants, but very colorful ensembles, as well as embellished shoes and sneakers, and a lot of jewelry. (And I don’t just mean the neck jewelry of the disco 70s or hip-hop era. I am talking about stacked arm bracelets, rings and ear jewelry.) Less is not more for this generation.

Fashion Reverie’s associate editor Kristopher Fraser in his 2019 “Male Music Celebs Push the Genderless Trend” explains how male music stars are helping to push this trend. And in GQ’s  November 2019 “New Masculinity” issue, hip-hop and pop music icon Pharrell Williams discusses his fashion choices—which have more to do with what he likes than attempting to be gender fluid or binary—and being comfortable to who he is evolving into it.

Like Pharrell, male consumers are becoming more comfortable with garments that go beyond gender definition and are beginning to look beyond things that outwardly define their masculinity. 2020 promises to be a year of masculine expansiveness.

Social Media Reboot

While the last decade in fashion has been defined by having a strong social media presence, 2020 will be prompt a re-examination of social media and its viability to fashion and retail markets. While millennials made social media, as it relates to fashion, a popular vehicle to promote brand campaigns and new collections, many fashion insiders contend that social media does not really aid in moving garment purchases along any more than print publications, TV commercials, and billboards, particularly the collections of luxury brands. And while lower-priced retail may have some traction on social media, luxury brands are questioning if all the hype translates to real significant sales.

2020 will see a serious re-examination of fashion social media with a possible demotion of key influencers, who in the past were paid big bucks for their followers but recent seasons have rendered their market influence nonproductive and flat.

New York Fashion Week’s Continued Decline

If you were fortunate to attend New York Fashion Week (NYFW) when it had a residency at Bryant Park or Lincoln Center, you experienced NYFW at its most glamorous and inspiring. There were major brands that showed at NYFW from all continents, not to mention supermodels strutting in the most innovative and stunning garments. Add to that the bevy of celebrities that peppered all the top shows, and you had a fashion week that, at times, excelled all expectations.

Unfortunately, those days are gone!! With major American fashion houses opting to skip NYFW and showing in LA or Europe, and the international press exiting for greener pastures, you now have a fashion week with only a few major brands that can inspire and excite. And with the CFDA now selling tickets—at a very high price, I might add—to anyone who still believes that the current NYFW mimics NYFW of almost a decade ago, you have a fashion week that is heavily populated with wannabees and spectators and slim on real industry professionals.

Contrary to what some folks believe, exclusivity and excellence is what made NYFW so special. Imagine going to American Ballet Theatre and seeing almost anybody trying to dance “Swan Lake” or going to the NBA Playoffs and seeing a second-string high school player in the lineup. Not happening!! Maybe the CFDA could learn some lessons from these great institutions!!

More Fashion Designers of Color

Expect more fashion designers of color in 2020. In the past five years we have seen the rise, and the demise of fashion designers of color that are making an impact on the fashion industry.

At the head of the pack is Virgil Abloh. A breakout star in his own right, Abloh is known for his Off-White fashion brand, his many collaborations with Nike and as the first African American to main a European luxury house. Abloh is the creative director of Louis Vuitton menswear.

Also, of note is Kirby Jean-Raymond of Pyer Moss, Christopher John Rodgers, Telfar Clemons of Telfar, Laquan Smith, Tracy Reese, Carly Cushnie of Cushnie, and a host of others—and that does not include the celebrity-helmed fashion brands. This is much larger group than the iconic names who have all come to love, i.e., Willi Smith, Stephen Burrows, Patrick Kelly, Jeffrey Banks, Byron Lars, and Ozwald Boateng.

Still, as the constellation of color expands, the larger question is if any of the designers of African ancestry and the ever-expanding list will get anywhere near the market acceptance and proliferation of Virgil Abloh. Fashion Reverie is divided on that question.

This is a very difficult industry for any emerging designer to achieve traction, especially black designers. Good Luck!!

Sustainable Fashion Will Explode

Unless you are living under a rock, you cannot deny that we are living with climate disaster! While governments vacillate and hassle over how to combat climate disaster, individuals are making conscious choices around their products that they purchase that affect climate disaster.

With the advent of activism around climate disaster, many fashion brands are directing their collections toward sustainability. Fashion sustainability goes beyond animal fur, leather and textiles that use dyes that hurt the environment. Fashion sustainability is more concerned about the global footprint that happens with fashion goods that sold all over the world. With the local production of goods, the global footprint is diminished exponentially.

Brands that have made a commitment to fashion sustainability include Eileen Fischer, Mara Hoffman, Grammar, Reformation, Patagonia, Boden, Ciden, Araks, and many others.

“Making the Cut” Will Trump “Project Runway”

There is new fashion design competition show on the horizon, and unlike “Project Runway” will give the winners some real dollars to turn their fashion line into a global brand. As interesting and groundbreaking as “Project Runway” was in its day, one of the drawbacks was that it never really gave designers enough prize-winning cash to adequately launch their fashion brands. “Making the Cut” is proffering a million dollars to the winner.

One hundred dollars may seem like a lot of money to someone from humble beginnings, but in the fashion industry that is a meager drop in the buck, particularly when good fashion PR—a necessity for any burgeoning fashion brand—can easily cost $5000 a month. (There goes $60K of your $100K out the window.)

“Making the Cut,” hosted and executive produce by “Project Runway” alums Heidi Klum and Tim Gunn promises to a much more realistic approach to mentoring and supporting nascent fashion brands. The Amazon Studios show will have an e-commerce component with the winners of each episode able to sell the winning weekly garment for under $100 on Amazon. And the show will feature episodes from New York, Paris, and Tokyo, all major fashion capitals. Judges will be Klum, Joseph Altuzarra, Naomi Campbell, and Nicole Ritchie. (Hmm, Christian Siriano you might want to start sending out your resume!!)

Fashion Reverie’s Top Stories of 2019

2020 promises new beginnings and new directions; however, it is important to look back at some of things accomplished in 2019. The year 2019 was a very interesting year in fashion. We lost some iconic fashion designers—Karl Lagerfeld, Emanuel Ungaro, Max Azria, and Chris March. And some well-known fashion brands and retail stores had to close shop, declared bankruptcy or experienced financial difficulties, namely Zac Posen, Barney’s New York, Roberto Cavalli, Sonia Rykiel, Jason Wu, Charlotte Russe, Forever 21 and many others.

Still, with all the fashion moving and shaking in 2019, there were some triumphs and great stories. Reflecting on all the good times of 2019, Fashion Reverie has selected 10 of its top feature stories. These selected features are not in a particular order.

1)     CNN’s documentary on Halston was a great success, bringing in lots of viewers to CNN. Our contributing editor Kristopher Fraser was fortunate to secure an interview with “HALSTON’s” director Frédéric Tcheng prior to the documentary premiere on CNN.

2)     Have you ever wondered about the personal style of Frida Kahlo, Pablo Picasso, Jean-Michel Basquiat, Keith Haring, Richard Avedon, Cindy Sherman, Leigh Bowery, and many others? In her groundbreaking book, “Legendary Artists and the Clothes They Wore,” fashion editor Terry Newman profiles the work of more than forty iconic artists in relationship to how they dressed. And Fashion Reverie was blessed to be able to interview Newman about this seminal piece of non-fiction.

3)     Fashion Reverie’s beauty editor Janine Silver brought all her great skills to the fore in her “2019 Summer Music Festival” article. The article detailed how to look bright-eyed and bushy-tailed at the Governor’s Ball Music Festival, Bonnaroo Music & Arts Festival, Firefly Music Festival, and all the bold music festivals of Summer 2019.

4)     Associate editor Francesca Simon kicked the ball out of the park with her “From Clicks Back to Bricks” article. This article detailed how young consumers are moving away in record numbers from online shopping to brick-and-mortar stores; but not in traditional shopping modes. Francesca Simon aptly demonstrates in this article that young consumers are more and more attracted to experiential, brick-and-mortar retail shopping. Retailers take notice.

Image courtesy of Moulin Rouge/Fanny Rabasse

5)     Fashion Reverie had the unique opportunity in the summer of 2019 to interview Claudine van der Bergh Cook, lead dancer from the Moulin Rouge. Claudine was in New York City with Moulin Rouge publicist Fanny Rabasse for the opening of the Broadway musical” Moulin Rouge.” Our article, “The Moulin Rouge: 130 Years of Brilliance,” detailed the incredible history of the famed Moulin Rouge, its costumes and the origins of the can-can.

6)     Associate editor Kristopher Fraser delivered once again with his 2019 holiday article, “How Generation Z Is Shaping the Future of Retail.” This article gives deep introspection and nuance about the shopping habits of Generation Z. The timing of the article blended perfectly with the 2019 holiday season.

7)     Fashion Reverie is setting industry standards with our fashion editorials and 2019 was no exception. This year Fashion Reverie executed one of our most interesting and fashion-forward editorials, “Modern Fairytales.” In this editorial we explore fairytale characters—Cinderella, Rapunzel, Little Red Riding Hood, The Three Little Pigs, and The Emperor’s New Clothes—as seen through the lens of 80s street style.

Our managing editor Carl Ayers was able to get into editor-in-chief William S. Gooch’s head and style the bejesus out of this editorial. This editorial was edgy, chic, joyous, and both now and next!!

8)     This has been a banner year for associate editor Kristopher Fraser. Kristopher Fraser rendered a great interview with the director of “Very Ralph,” Susan Lacey.

9)     In case you didn’t know, legacy fragrances are becoming all the rage. And Fashion Reverie is always in the mix when it comes to being ahead of the fashion curve. Our story on “Blocki Fragrances: The True American Luxury Fragrance” gave voice to the reinvigorated Blocki Fragrance line. Blocki Fragrances has been around since the late 1880s and great grandson Tyler Kraemer has brought the company back with a bang.

10) Associate editor Cameron Grey Rose curated a fantastic article on “Ethically Sound 2019 Holiday Gifts.” As we struggle globally with climate disaster, it is so important to not only take note of the global footprint of products and their effect on the environment, but to also do something about it!! For holiday season 2019, Cameron gave consumers a wealth of environmentally sustainable gifts to choose from.

Tea with Kristopher: The Month of December 2019

Happy holidays and happy New Year! Before you ring in 2019, let’s get in one last afternoon fashion tea.

A renowned jewelry brand paid a top influencer 2 million dollars and got no return on the investment. Someone should have told them that the type of people purchasing luxury jewelry are don’t take fashion cues from social media influencers and reality stars. You live and you learn, well, hopefully!!

A once gloried fashion PR agency has put a ban on their account people contacting editors. No wonder they have lost so many accounts. The reason their glory days are kaput might be their own fault.

A top fashion magazine lied to a particular trade publication about their performance. The magazine told the publication that they are one of the top three performing magazines. Turns out that is not the case, and in this tumultuous media landscape they are struggling just as much as anyone else.

A publication that is now digital only is still underperforming. While closing their print edition was expected to help this media brand’s bottom line, they still aren’t turning the expected profit. Hopefully, investment in video and more digital advertising will help them out.

Rock It or Leave It: Holiday 2019 Fashion

It’s the most wonderful time of the year! December means a heavy schedule of holiday parties and family gatherings. Let’s look to the celebrity red-carpet appearances for ideas for what to wear at these holiday soirees and what trends should be aggressively ignored.

Images courtesy of celebmafia.com and hollywoodlife.com

Feathers

This trend seemed to rear its head every few years on red carpets, but consumers are smart enough to leave it there. Feathers can make even the most put-together outfit look sloppy and give you odd silhouettes. Or in Emma Roberts‘ case make it seems like she’s being attacked by giant centipedes. The worst part is it’s difficult to anchor feathers, so often you’ll end up molting all over the party.

Leave it!

Images courtesy of D’Orazio and Associates, eonline.com, and tomandlorenzo.com, respectively

Red Suits

Red is the color of the season and the stars are donning red suits to walk the red carpet!  It’s a fun look, made chic by accessorizing red with black and keeping your ensembles tailored. Try to avoid white as that will steer your holiday outfit into Santa territory.

Rock it!

Blazers

This began as a trend on Milan’s runways this year and it’s wonderful to see it segue onto the red carpet. Blazers are perfect for holiday parties. They elevate any outfit and they often have pockets which are sorely lacking on most ladies’ garments. They help keep you warm and can be worked into your everyday wardrobe.  Rose Bryne nails the look by wearing her blazer with jeans (not sure about those shoes).

Rock it!

Images courtesy of tomandlorenzo.com

Sparkle

As much as we love to sparkle in gowns embellished with crystals or sequins, sometimes it’s just not appropriate outside of special events and parties. The holiday season is the perfect time to break out the shine! Avoid head to toe sequins or you risk looking like a drag queen, not to mention deeply sequined gowns can be very heavy. When choosing an embellished gown make sure you try it on first and move around in it including sitting down. Sometimes crystals or other embellishments can make it hard to move or poke you when you’re seated.

Rock it!

Images courtesy of tomandlorenzo.com

Waist bows

Why is this a thing? Waist bows? Bows are great of course but their placement can be tricky. Niecy Nash would look fabulous in this dress but the bow interrupts her silhouette and gives her a thick waist. Connie Britton and Julianne Hough are slender fit women, but with those bows even they look thick-waisted and hippy.

Leave it!

The Beginning of the End of Fur

Is it safe to say that Generation Z and Millennials are the driving force of the faux fur movement? In the words of American rapper and songwriter Macklemore “I’m gonna pop some tags, [but I] only got twenty dollars in my pocket.” The younger generation does not shy away from seeking cost effective and animal friendly alternatives and the fashion industry is taking note. “Anti-fur messaging is being amplified by social media and a millennial customer base that is paying closer attention to the values represented by the products they buy,” reported Business of Fashion. And in this season of luxury gift giving, what are luxury gift givers going to do in this anti-fur environment?

As of 2019, California has officially banned and prohibited the sale, manufacture and production of new fur products. Nevertheless, California isn’t the only one paving the way for an environmental shift; countries such as Serbia, Luxembourg, Belgium, Norway, Germany, and Czech Republic have also banned fur farming. “On October 11, Governor Gavin Newsom approved bill AB44, which makes it illegal to sell, donate, or manufacture new fur products in the state,” detailed The Cut. Don’t worry your granny’s vintage fur is safe as this law solely focuses on the selling. Be sure to take note, as it comes with a hefty fine of $500 for first time offenders and $1,000 for multiple offenses.

Yet, the real question of the day is why are fashion designers really jumping on the faux fur bandwagon? The $40 billion global fur trade has always held a power position in the luxury industry. With a more forward thinking and modern approach, brands and retailers are redefining luxury and showcasing that real fur is no longer held as a status symbol. “For brands like Gucci, the goodwill generated by banning fur outweighs the sacrifice of a few million dollars in sales of fur-trimmed loaders,” explains Business of Fashion. Net-A-Porter and Farfetch, powerhouses in the fashion industry, have committed to going fur-free, resulting in a public stand to directly band fur sales on their platforms.

While being anti-fur brings awareness to the cruelty of animals, is it more sustainable for the world? Studies have found that faux fur, made from synthetics, acrylics and poly-fibers, is non-biodegradable and can last between 500 to 1,000 years. “Fake fur is obviously more of a polluter than real fur,” says American Vogue editor-in-chief Anna Wintour. Whereas, real fur is non-biodegradable, recyclable, lasting between 50 to 60 years.

On one hand you have the activists that stand for the cruelty of animals, and on the other you have those same very harmful products such as synthetic yarns that go into the production of faux fur. So, is it possible for brands to both be sustainable while being anti-fur?

“For the purpose of the law, fur is defined as “animal skin or part thereof with hair, fleece or fur fibers attached thereto. For the purposes of shoppers, that means mink, sable, chinchilla, lynx, fox, rabbit, beaver, coyote and other luxury furs. Exceptions have been made for cowhide, deerskin, sheepskin and goatskin. Which means that shearling is totally fine,” details The New York Times. But, is shearling only a loophole in the anti-fur movement? Dan Mathews, Senior Vice President of PETA, tells WWD “It’s definitely a big step. We would love to see people design without leather and without any animal products. But what’s happening now as these designers have shed their fur lines, it starts the ball rolling.”

As the hottest trend in fashion, this shift toward anti-fur marks an animal rights commitment. Consumers are ditching fur and fashion brands are following suit. “Faux fur is more than just simply a trend, it’s prominence,” reports American Vogue. People For The Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA), is no longer the only voice for the anti-fur movement, as the fashion industry supports their activism for the betterment of the planet and animal welfare. “Studies show activism is impacting purchasing decisions,” reports Business of Fashion.

Social media has opted as a direct line for consumers to hold companies accountable for their social and financial footprints. For most brands deciding to join the animal rights activism has played in their favor, as a marketing boost and overall business shift. But, is this risk strategy worth this new direction? Time will tell!!

“It’s about time that the fashion industry woke up to the fact that fur is cruel, barbaric, and simply incredibly old-fashioned and unfashionable,” Stella McCartney told WWD. As an advocate in the fashion industry, McCartney believes the subject of fur has to be addressed, you have to stand for your business, yourself and your beliefs. “I have started to think about legacy, the next generations and leaving a better future,” Donatella Versace told The Economist’s 1843 magazine.
