Celebrities that Support Black Fashion Designers

When you consider which celebrity or public figures wear black designers, who comes to mind first? I would guess political figures like Michelle Obama and Vice President Kamala Harris. Of course, you probably also thought of Beyoncé. However, there are many celebrities who show support by supporting designers of color. Since it is Black History Month, Fashion Reverie curated some looks for our viewers of some celebrities that we find super stylish and that are making some fashionable choices with black fashion designers.

Kerry Washington

Washington treated fans to her inaugural look with a sartorial choice in a suit designed by Autumn Adeigbo. Adeigbo’s namesake label was founded in 2016 and is known for eco-friendly bright and colorful dresses and ensembles.

Serena Williams 

LaQuan Smith work has been noted by fashion industry professionals for some time. Smith’s design aesthetic is daring and perfect for risk takers. Even though Serena Williams is more of a risk taker on the tennis court, she has been a supporter of the gifted designer throughout his career.

Kim Kardashian shared her love for JBD Apparel on Instagram last year. Founded in 2017 by Saudia Islam, Kardashian exclaims, “you’d be surprised at how affordable the pieces are.” And she is right, if you are in the market for affordable and stylish garments, should be your go-to brand.

Hipsters come to mind when Fashion Reverie saw this gray oversized blazer from Heron Preston during Men’s Fashion Week in January 2018. Bella Hadid has been photographed supplementing her street style in Heron Preston tweed jackets during Paris Fashion Week. Preston’s design aesthetic brings back the good old days of fashion week back when you could catch so many great celebrity street style looks!

Naomi Campbell is an activist and a name the fashion world symbolizes with elegance and fashion-forward sensibility, Naomi Campbell, was one of the very first celebrities outspoken about inequality of people of color who work in the fashion industry. 

Kenneth Ize who works with Nigerian artisans to preserve fabric-making techniques and then makes these fabrics into something modern debuted his collection at Paris Fashion Week. Naomi closed his show wearing a colorful-striped belted trench coat.

At the opening of the Smithsonian Museum of African American History and Culture Lupita showed up in a unique and head turning ensemble. She was wearing a stunning Maki Oh blue dress with prints, a turban, and bright blue stilettos. Maki Oh is inspired by African design and motives.

Meghan Markle

Markle is a trending topic, and she is expecting her second child. Fashion Reverie remembers when we first saw Meghan with Prince Harry. We remember the Wales Bonner trench dress Markle wore, designed by Grace Wales Bonner. Bonner combines European and African styles in her menswear and womenswear boutique.

We love Cushnie and we love Ashley in this mustard Cushnie wrap dress. She was on her way to Variety’s Power of Women event in this photo and it is a perfect. This Cushnie dress accentuated her curves in all the right places.
