Editors’ Pick: Fendi’s Spring 2020 Peekaboo Bag Campaign

It’s been a decade and Fendi’s Peekaboo bag is just as popular as when the bag first debuted during Fendi’s spring 2009 show in Milan. Models Laura Stone and Anja Rubik flashed the classic black patent leather bags as they flaunted their well-honed signature runway walks.

“It is a timeless bag,” says creative director of accessories and menswear Silvia Venturini-Fendi who designed the bag with future generations in mind. “You buy a Peekaboo not only to wear now, but to wear in the future. One of your daughters will probably steal it from your closet!”

The Fendi peekaboo bag is a bag of two parts, divided by a rigid middle with a twist lock on both sides. The element of surprise is all down to its front flap which can be pushed down into a U-shape to reveal the strong central partition which acts a canvas to Fendi’s artisanal flourishes.

The peekaboo bag is made at Fendi’s ateliers by its esteemed staff of craftsman. These craftspeople join cuts of prestige materials, before fitting the leather case around its strong central core, itself fitted with a twist-lock which is matched with gold-finish or silvery-white Palladium hardware.

For the spring 2020 season Fendi presents its classic handbag in large and mini versions, with the leather ‘Interlace’ workmanship. The leather is cut and rolled into stripes that are hand-knotted to create a crochet-effect pattern with squared knots, giving life to the shell of the bag. The hand knotted shell is then folded on the opposite side showing the uniqueness of the backside of the workmanship and squared knots. The interlaced shell is then finalized with a maxi metal needle. Finally, the handle, the accessories and the inside pocket are sewn to the hand knotted shell.

Fendi places this spring 2020 campaign against the backdrop of bold floral prints, and a 1960s pastel color-blocked collage of color. True to form, the spring 2020 peekaboo bags fit very nicely into this explosion of color and joyous kaleidoscope of fun and frivolity.
