Pop star Pharrell Williams has yet another reason to be happy.  Uniqlo has hired Pharrell to be the new face of its T-shirt line, designed by Japanese streetwear legend and A Bathing Ape founder NIGO.

Williams will serve as spokesperson and collaborator for the line’s spring/summer 2014 campaigns. His image will also appear in campaign images and television commercials.

The global unveiling of the spring/summer 2014 campaign will be on March 28 with a SPRZ NY (“Surprise New York”) project, a collaboration with the city’s Museum of Modern Art. All of this is on the heels of Pharrell Williams’ recent collaboration with G-Star Raw’s collection to benefit the environment. The RAW for Oceans collection is set to hit stores on Aug 15 and uses “Bionic Yarn” (fibres made from recycled plastic collected from the sea).

Subway’s fashion venture

It seems Subway has also jumped into the fashion fray. As a part of its new campaign around the “Flatizza,” Subway’s newest food creation, Subway produced a few flirty dresses from the materials that package the “Flatizza.” Jennifer Henry of FlockFlockFlock designed the flirty culinary fashion delights.

This is not the first time Subway has ventured into fashion. During New York Fashion Week September 2013 as a part of its SUBWAY Restaurants’ SUBtember celebration, Subway produced a fashion show with garments made from Subway packaging materials.

Miley’s new job

The full spread from Marc Jacobs’ spring/summer 2014 campaign featuring pop star Miley Cyrus has just been released. And the word on the street is that Miley might just have a new career as a fashion model. Add this to her accomplishment as a pop singing sensation and actress.

The Marc Jacobs spring/summer 2014 campaign, photographed by David Sims concentrates on the dark, brooding side of Miley Cyrus: a real contrast to Cyrus’ booty shaking, party girl on-stage persona.

Hmm, a career in fashion for the twerking, pop phenom; why not? If Kendall Jenner can light up the runway in Paris,  Miley can certainly inspire fashion designers. And she is!!

Breaking Fashion News: Anna Wintour Smiles, but Off with Their Heads

How important is the front row? Well, apparently it’s not as important as it used to be. At the Valentino show during Paris Fashion Week, Vogue editor-in-chief and Conde Nast creative director Anna Wintour was seated in the second row; horror of all horrors!! And to make matters even a little stickier, Wintour’s Vogue confreres creative director Grace Coddington and fashion editor Tonne Goodman were seated in the front row.

Something is fishy in Paris!! In New York City, the front row doesn’t hold the same value that it once held. With the exit of pop stars and Hollywood celebrities from Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week, the front row is now the final resting place of fashion posers, wannabees, and the occasional washed-up, desperate-for-attention reality TV stars. Only the runway shows of Anna Sui, Diane von Furstenberg, Marc Jacobs, Calvin Klein, Michael Kors, and few notable others merit the presence of Anna Wintour.

However, London, Milan, and Paris are another matter.  Is Wintour’s seat demotion the result of a twitter tiff with Giorgio Armani? It seems that Wintour opted out of Armani’s show in Milan for shows in Paris.

“She took an airplane, dumped me and went to Paris,’ said the 79-year-old, whose brand is a major advertiser in Vogue. ‘It’s not professional. She is influential and powerful. But, perhaps, I’m influential as well.”

Or is this much ado about nothing? According to Valentino’s spokespeople Vogue’s seat assignments were cut dramatically this season and Wintour opted to sit in the second row so that Vogue columnist Sarah Mower, who was reviewing the show, could have better sight vision.

In the words of Gertrude Stein, “there is no there, there.”  Hmm, or is it?

Adidas aims for Bigger

Being the second largest sportswear retailer is not enough for Adidas. Losing market share to the world’s largest sportswear retailer, Nike, has prompted Adidas to launch its “HomeCourt” concept.

Adidas is aiming to replicate a stadium experience in all of its flagship stores. The “HomeCourt” concept has already been launched in Adidas’ biggest store in Beijing, China.

The new-look stores will have a tunnel entry which welcomes shoppers with the sound of cheering fans as well as a “team room” fitting area and a central spot recalling the middle of a sports field equipped with touchscreens to help find products.

Menkes will serve as fashion critic and reporter for all international websites—Britain, France, Italy, China, Russia, Japan, Germany and Spain.

“I am thrilled to become international Vogue editor at Condé Nast International, which has a real commitment to journalistic excellence, and to have the opportunity to write for a wider global audience through the Vogue websites,” said Menkes. “I am grateful to have spent 25 years at the International Herald Tribune—a newspaper where I had unstinting support in being able to express myself freely and honestly. Ralph Lauren comes under attack

The USA Winter Olympic team uniforms were unveiled last Thursday. In spite of the controversy that ensued around the USA 2012 Summer Olympic team uniforms, Ralph Lauren was again chosen to create this year’s Sochi Winter Olympic togs.

However, many social media fans expressed that Ralph Lauren’s uniforms looked like a woolen patchwork of stars and stripes. Team USA will be dressed like your rich aunt at Olympics,” posted @Rio2016 on Twitter. “It was so nice that Ralph Lauren’s grandmother volunteered to knit all the Team USA sweaters herself. I like the personal touch,” tweeted @My_Lo.

“The sweater is a ‘patchwork’ in the true sense of the word to make a collage that represents the American athletes who each have their own unique story to tell,” the brand said in its release. This is the fourth time Ralph Lauren has created Olympic uniforms for team USA.

Glamorous Paris Couture

Paris Couture Week ended with a marriage between Hollywood glamour and Gaultier–like avante garde. Belgian couture designer Serkan Cura successfully combined these two disparate points of view for the last show on Thursday of Paris Couture Week.

The couture shows this season were marked by a return to glamorous romanticism and a lightness of being. “It has to be light otherwise couture’s image will be dated,” Lagerfeld told reporters after the show on Tuesday.

Serge Carreira, a professor at Paris’s famed Sciences-Po University and an expert on the luxury industry, said “romanticism and lightness were the keywords of this season”. Carreira said this was accompanied “by a certain sobriety with just a hint of subtle exoticism with the hats of Schiaparelli, Gaultier’s butterflies and the African motifs of Valentino.”

Drew adds another one

Drew Barrymore always has her hands in a lot of pots. Well, add her new job as editor-at-large at Refinery 29 to the mix. Now, we all know that at a lot of publications, the editor-at-large position is a perfunctory job where the editor gets to write what they want, when they want. However, it appears that Barrymore is taking her two-year stint at Refinery 29 seriously with already posting articles since her start date on January 7.

Drew Barrymore will write about balancing work, art, fashion, and health. Editor-in-chief Christene Barberich said Barrymore was hired “because she’s always out there in the world, searching for inspiration as it relates to how real modern women want to look and feel.”

Gwen Stefani is back

Gwen Stefani’s clothing brand, L.A.M.B., has not shown at MBFW for a few seasons. But, that doesn’t seem to be holding Stefani back from creating chic clothes. Stefani has partnered with 7 for All Mankind and Citizens of Humanity’s Michael Glasser for an eco-friendly, affordable line named DWP (Designs With a Purpose).

“I was trying to get all the basics. Michael nailed the bottoms,” detailed Stefani. “For tops, I was trying to think about what I wear besides a tank top. I love cuffed-up sleeves, tops that are long in front and short in back. And we did a jumpsuit and a dress to fill in the gaps.”

DWP retails between $80 and $130 and will hit stores for spring 2014.

You may have heard of “driving while black.” Well, “shopping while black” has now come front and center as a lawsuit by Trayon Christian, an African American college student, was filed on Tuesday in a Manhattan Supreme Court claiming that Christian was racially profiled while purchasing a $350 Salvatore Ferragamo belt at Barneys New York last April.

In response to the racial profiling claim, Barneys has released the following statement, “Barneys New York typically does not comment on pending litigation. In this instance, we feel compelled to note that after carefully reviewing the incident of last April, it is clear that no employee of Barneys New York was involved in the pursuit of any action with the individual other than the sale. Barneys New York has zero tolerance for any form of discrimination and we stand by our long history in support of all human rights.”

Wal-Mart Brings it Home

Retail giant Wal-Mart has joined the economic movement around homegrown manufacturing. Wal-Mart pledged in January of this year to buy an additional $50 billion in U.S.–made goods over the next 10 years.

This decision has come on the back of some of Wal-Mart’s supplier’s decision to produce more products in the U.S. due to rising wages in China. Critics of Wal-Mart’s homegrown initiative have expressed concern over the mega brand sincere efforts to support U.S.–based manufacturing.

Bangladesh Fires Spark Global Protests

Global concerns and protest continue as concerned groups united in June to protest against multinational retailers that have yet to support improving labor conditions and safety protections in Bangladesh’s booming garment sector. Activists staged protest around the world in major cities to draw attention and raise consumer awareness on safety violations and labor abuses in Bangladesh factories. These protests coincided with U.S. campaigns against the working conditions of Wal-Mart workers in stores and warehouses.   Activists groups staged a variety of protests and demonstrations from Osaka, Japan to New York City.

Since the Rana Plaza factory collapse in April that took the lives of 1,100 workers, Bangladesh factories, as well as multinational brands have come under international scrutiny. According to the Death Trap campaign, about 50 international retailers have signed on to a proposed safety agreement that establishes a “binding contract between the brands and worker representatives that make these commitments enforceable—so the brands have to follow through, even if it means increased costs or longer turnaround times on orders.”

Dolce

Dolce & Gabbana, Caged Birds?

In June designers Domenico Dolce and Steffano Gabbana were found guilty of failing to declare 1.3 billion in income to Italian authorities. Domenico and Steffano were both sentenced to 20 months in jail. Though both designers have denied the charges, prosecutors contend that the design team evaded taxes on earned income through a Luxembourg‒based company.

When brought up on charges of fraud two years ago, this highly publicized case was thrown out of court. Still, Italy’s high court stated the Dolce and Gabbana could be charged with evasion of taxes.
