Where are the boys?

With the exit of Michael Bastian, Y-3, and several other menswear designers from New York Fashion Week (NYFW), many fashion industry insiders wonder about the future of menswear during NYFW. Though the Cadillac-sponsored Men’s Day prior to NYFW has kept some menswear designers showing in NYC, the initiative only has room for a dozen so designers showing on one day.

Well, the CFDA to the rescue. As reported this past September, the CFDA is organizing a New York Men’s Fashion Week that parallels to the men’s shows in London, Milan, and Paris. This project, launched two years ago is still in taking shape with plans to launch in mid- July of 2015, corresponding to Liberty, Project, Capsule, and MRket trade shows.

“We still have many points to verify, but we have tentative dates so that we can organize this first edition in July 2015,” said Steven Kolb, CEO of the CFDA, to WWD.

Ralph Lauren, Michael Bastian, and Michael Kors have already signed on with Calvin Klein, John Varvatos, and Thom Browne hopefully opting in.

This season Black Friday did not necessarily leave retailers in the black. Amid protestors shouting for higher wages and American citizens’ outrage over the Ferguson verdict, many holiday shoppers decided to stay away from stores and malls and shop online or not shop at all.

“Wal-Mart, Wal-Mart you’re no good. Treat your workers like you should,” a crowd of several dozen shouted outside a Wal-Mart store in downtown Chicago. Eleven police arrest was made at that location.

“It just looks like any other weekend,” said Angela Olivera, a 32-year-old housewife shopping for children’s clothing at the Westfarms Mall near Hartford, Connecticut. “The kind of crowds we usually see are missing and this is one of the biggest malls here. I think people are just not spending a lot,” as reported in a fashionmag.com article.

It has been estimated that Black Friday sales were down 11% as compared to 2013 sales.

For Condé Nast unpaid costs big bucks

Although the Condé Nast intern class-action lawsuit was settled out of court in April, the amount of the settlement, $5.8 million, was not determined until last Thursday.

The lawsuit—filed in June 2013 by Matthew Leiba former intern at The New Yorker, and Lauren Ballingerwho interned at W. Condé’s internship program—stated that interns were underpaid for their work. The settlement equates to approximately $700 to $1,900 per intern.

“While we continue to believe the internships that were offered at Condé Nast provided experiences that were among the best in the media business, we determined that settling the lawsuit is the right business decision for Condé Nast, as it allows us to focus our time and resources on developing meaningful, new opportunities to support future up-and-coming talent,” said CEO Chuck Townsend in an internal memo that went out to Condé staffers on last Thursday as reported in fashionweekdaily.com.

D&G found not guilty

The Italian Supreme Court of Justice found Domenico Dolce and Stefano Gabbana not guilty of tax evasion.

In April the design duo was found guilt of transferring control of their brand to a shell company in Luxembourg to avoid paying Italian taxes. The evaded taxes came to a total of 200 million euros ($277 million dollars).

Domenico Dolce and Stefano Gabbana appealed the conviction, and on Friday, April 24 the Italian Supreme Court of Justice annulled the conviction, declaring that the prosecution case was “unfounded” and ending the case.

“We have always been honest and we are extremely proud of this recognition by the Italian Court of Justice,” the two fashion house chiefs said in a statement, as reported in fashionmag.com.

Both designers were to serve 18-months in jail.

Family affair

OK, Vogue contributing editor Andre Leon Talley has declared Kanye, Kim, and daughter North West the “First Family of Fashion.” Really? Come on Andre, we know you have love affair with the media-crazed couple, but don’t you think naming them the “First Family of Fashion” is a bit of a stretch?

In a recent article Talley explained his choice. “The three were a force of iconic moments as they pivoted around Paris, the mecca of fashion during the last fashion shows this month [Paris Fashion Week in September] …[They are] the Nick and Nora Charles of our time, the Liz and Dick Burton, without the brawls.”

Stay tuned as Fashion Reverie’s celebrity style editor Tijana Ibrahimovic gives her picks as the “First Family of Fashion.”
