Beauty Tips for Dry, Brittle Winter Hair

a beautiful woman on a winter snowFrom static cling to dry flyaways and thinning strands, tis the season for winter hair.

With winter you get a combination of bad situations when it comes to your hair,” said Redken Artistic Educator Kellie Diana Johnson. “You’ve got the harsh cold temperatures. AT the same time you have forced, hot air on the hair—dry heat from hair dryers and straighteners.

“You end up with dry, brittle hair. The combination of the dry heat and the cold weather take all the moisture out of your hair.”

The problem is more than an issue of aesthetics. Dry hair means breakage, Johnson pointed out.

And, she added, “Putting on a wool hat is probably not the best thing either because of the abrasion of the wool against the hair. They say you should wear a silk scarf under your hat. You’re supposed to sleep on a silk pillowcase, too.”

Redken chromatics haircolor

But who does that really? “Honestly, I don’t know that many people that do that,” said Johnson, who addition to her work around the country on behalf of Redken also owns Elan Hair Studio in Sea Girt, NJ. Johnson also has worked on hair teams for New York Fashion Week and the MTV and Bravo cable networks.

Instead, Johnson said the key is to use products that put the moisture back into the hair and protect against damage from the winter temperatures and exposure to extreme heat.

winter_hair_02“There are all kinds of technology today with hair products so the best thing I would recommend is to really take advantage of these products,” Johnson said. “I would also recommend you not wash your hair every day. I think we overdo that. You can go three times a week just to maintain the moisture in your hair,” she said.

In addition to thermal protection products, Johnson also recommends regular usage of moisture masks and conditioners. Frequent trims to prevent split ends should also be part of your winter hair routine, she said.

date:modify: 2012-09-13T13:29:44+00:00

“We focus so much on winter skin but the hair is an organ, too and we have to moisturize that as well,” Johnson said. Of course if one is going to add moisture, it’s important not to counteract that effort by overdoing it with the heat one applies to the hair.

“A lot of people turn up their flat irons over 450 (degrees). Use a thermal protecting product is only one part of it. The other part you have to remember is not to turn up the temperature so high. 385 (degrees) is fine for most heads of hair,” she said. “If you have coarse hair you can put that temperature a little higher but remember hotter isn’t always better.”

Even the quality of the bristles in your hair brush can make a difference, Johnson said. Brushes with boar bristles are best; stay away from metal bristles and make sure you don’t pull the hair too hard when blow drying, she said.

Here are some of Johnson’s other suggestions:

  • For oily hair you may want to just add moisture to the ends instead of rubbing a moisturizing mask or conditioner into the scalp. People with very long hair may want to follow this tip.
  • Stay away from clarifying shampoos during the winter. Your hair and scalp are dry enough.
  • If you opt for a hair weave or hair extensions, make sure you condition your own hair as it is growing out.
  • If you color your hair, remember that you need to deep condition your hair to restore the lipids.
  • Dry shampoo can be a good option if you need to clean your hair between shampoos.

Beauty Alert: Soft, Vibrant Skin during Harsh Winter Months

Frozen. Chilled female face covered in snow iceNo, it’s not your imagination. Your skin is probably drier than usual, especially your hands. You can thank Old Man Winter and this winter’s frigid temperature phenomenon dubbed the Polar Vortex for this particular hand jive.

“Cold air holds less water vapor than warm air,” said noted dermatologist Dr. Leslie Baumann, author of “The Skin Type Solution” and CEO of Baumann Cosmetic & Research Institute in Miami, Fl. (www.derm.net). Baumann also writes the Yahoo! health blog, The Skin Guru, and is a regular expert for numerous publications as well as on television shows like “Good Morning America” and “The Today Show.”

Baumann said of all the parts of the body it’s the hands that suffer the most when it comes to dry skin. “Hands can be drier. They have different types of lipids,” she said of the naturally occurring molecules that include oils. “That’s why they wrinkle in water while the rest of the body does not.”

Dry-winter-skin-tips_05Baumann said the problem is exacerbated by the use of certain products such as hand sanitizers which, because of their high alcohol content, dry the skin. And, she added, there’s also a link between one’s diet and dry skin.

“You need fatty acids in fat and cholesterol for the skin to hold onto water. Lots of vegans have dry skin,” she noted. And, she added, that daily caffeine fix may also be adding to the problem since caffeine also dehydrates the body.

Downloads105So what’s the answer? After all, winter is also cold and flu season and the use of cleansers and hand sanitizers is frequently mentioned as a way to limit the spread of germs and viruses.

Baumann said one of her suggestions is to use cleansers that don’t contain alcohol. She encourages her patients to use GCP Skincare, a cleanser used by physicians before surgery.

“It makes a really great hand sanitizer that does not have alcohol and does not dry the hands,” she said.

As for moisturizers, Baumann said there are certain important ingredients to look for including glycerin, MLE emulsion, ceramides and shea butter. Drinking plenty of water is also important, she said, adding that she also likes to encourage her patients to use a new water additive called Drip Drop that helps the body absorb water.

Among her favorite products are Vaseline Intensive Care Total Moisture Dry Skin Lotion, Kiehl’s and L’Occitane brand moisturizers and Zeroid face cream, though she noted that hand creams really are best for the hands since they’re heavier.

“Stay away from peppermint, cinnamon and other allergenic substances. And foaming soaps are the worst for dry hands,” she added. “If you must wash then use a cream cleanser, a gel like Cetaphil or wash with GCP Skincare.”

Topaz and turquoise jewelry was quite a hit this season. Though Paula Patton’s beautiful David Yurman ring was hard to notice because of her overwhelming dress, the ring was a standout nonetheless. Sofia Vergara wore a lovely Lorraine Schwartz necklace and Emma Roberts and Jennifer Lawrence choose to represent Neil Lane. All great looks but Jennifer did best in bringing out her beauty with the pop of green and a chick new hairstyle.

Clutches are an important detail when walking a carpet. This year lots of starlets matched the clutches with blinged-out jewelry or nail art—manicure in case of Zooey Deschanel. It looks like we all have to go shopping for some gold oversized bangle cuffs.

Jessica Chastain in Bulgari necklace and Cate Blanchett in Chopard earrings went for a more classic, traditional look. With these two actresses, traditional sophistication is always in vogue. Until the next red carpet, stay fabulous!!

Are you looking for a facelift, of sorts, to your running sneakers? Well, look no further. As of late, running sneaks with an edge seem to be the go-to shoe for anyone looking to add a little bit of flair to their daily look.  From neons, prints/patterns, and different textures and fabrications, running sneakers have gotten the fashion-forward makeover it’s been waiting for! Perfect for men and women, running sneakers are hitting their stride this season with no signs of slowing down.

Ruffian Spring 2013

Ruffian Spring 2013

The mixing of sport elements into everyday wear began a few seasons ago, ending up in the wardrobe of sneaker aficionados. This trend has now caught traction on a commercial scale. The concept began with designers pulling inspiration from clothes that would be traditionally worn to the gym or reserved for outdoor activities. Caps, hoodies, sweatshirts, and sport pants have gotten modified to appeal to a more fashion-focused consumer. With the introduction of Isabel Marant’s wedged sneakers to the runways a few seasons ago, as well as looks from Ruffian’s spring 2013 collection, it has become trendy for fashionistas to add a more casual but rugged edge to their usually glammed up look.

Style-It girl of the moment, Solange Knowles was recently tapped to bring her brand of funk, flair, and fun to Puma as she was named art director and creative consultant for the shoe brand. With Solange Knowles solidly in step with this re-invention of the running sneak, this trend will amp up into overdrive! Now take a look at some of Fashion Reverie’s favorite styles of running shoes:

PUMA x Solange Knowles

When it was announced that Solange Knowles had been tapped to be the new art director and creative consultant at Puma, the blogosphere lit up like the Christmas tree at Rockefeller Center. Everyone wanted to know what the shoes would look like and when they would arrive in stores.  Well, the much-anticipated arrival is February 2014 and surprisingly for Puma, the product of his collaborative effort is relatively affordable.

The collection, “Girls of Blaze,” is inspired by Brazil.  Solange worked with three different design teams to get just the right look for her Puma debut. These are a must-have for any young fashionista wanting to bring a little bit of South American spice to their shoe collection.
