It’s hard to keep up with all the latest beauty trends with so much product coming out so frequently.   To help you sort through the clutter of product launches, Fashion Reverie has rounded up our beauty experts to discover what new products landed on their desks and really have them talking! Remember, just because temperatures are cooling down doesn’t mean that you can stop being concerned about sunscreen and sun bleached dry hair.

From protecting us from our phones—and the damage they’re inflicting on our faces—to recreating our favorite salon gel manicure at home, these products are our newest obsessions.  We’re sure they’ll soon be your favorites too!

The DIY 1 Step Gel Mani

Gelish Mini has been one of our favorite brands for at-home gel manicures, but now with their new Uno Collection, it’s faster than ever to get long-lasting color without a trip to the salon.  Just swipe on a thin layer (or two) of your favorite Gelish Uno hue and place your nails under the UV lights!  With virtually no drying time, you can head straight out the door and be on your way!  The only downside is that the one step collection doesn’t last as long as it’s multi-step predecessors (about 7–10 days versus 14–21 days) However, Uno will stay on longer than traditional polish and with it’s quick and easy application, it’s never been simpler!

Primer that Mattifies

If there’s one makeup tip we’ve heard over and over again, it’s use a primer.  While we can’t deny the benefits of preparing your skin before applying makeup, if you’re anything like us, you probably forgo this crucial step!  Despite all the experts telling us constantly how important it is—and yes even seeing the benefits for ourselves—it wasn’t until we discovered Catrice Cosmetics’ Prime and Fine pore refining anti-shine base that we really began to listen.  While it doesn’t provide some pore shrinking miracle, the lightweight formula will expertly keep your makeup in place and minimize the dreaded shine that accompanies a night of dancing!  So even at the end of the night, you’ll be selfie ready!!

The Sake Mask

If you’re only enjoying a glass of sake with your sushi then you’re really missing out on some amazing skin benefits!  Not only is sake known as a delicious alcoholic beverage, but also for it’s brightening and smoothing skin benefits; which you can thank the kojic and amnio acids for!  Rather than bathing in alcohol, Boscia has captured all the skin improving benefits of sake in their Sake Bright White Mask.  This peel-off mask promises to hydrate, firm, tone, brighten, and plump up dehydrated skin due to a mix of sake, sea fern algae, vitamin C, and peptone complex. The Sake Bright White Mask also reduces fine lines and wrinkles and minimizes the look of age spots.  After your first application, you’ll immediately feel the difference in your skin and notice a nice natural healthy glow as well!   Hey, another reason to love sake!

Tinted Protection from Our Smart Phones

By now everyone knows the importance of applying sunscreen daily to protect yourself from the sun’s harmful rays.  However, have you ever considered what damage those HEV (high energy visible) blue light rays from our electronic devices are doing to our skin?  Visible light (from the sun and electronics) penetrates deeper into the skin that UV rays.  Which has us wondering why we haven’t thought to worry about the long-term effects of these harmful rays known to cause irreversible damage?  Junetics understands the importance of protecting our skin from UVA, UVB, HEV and IR rays, so they’ve came up with Screen, a tinted sunscreen and HEV protector.  Wear it alone or with foundation and know your skin is protected from just about everything!  With this simple layer of protection, over time, your skin will certainly thank you!!

Volumizing Mousse

Don’t let your strands fall flat!  With Bed Head by TIGI’s Big Head volume boosting foam, it’s easier than ever to create full, voluminous hair!  Apply a pump or two to damp wet hair and style as usual.  Scrunch into hair for luxurious waves or blow straight for that perfectly polished salon blown out look.  Big Head adds massive “enviable” body, but keeps your hair soft all night long!  It’s the easiest way to achieve the volume of your dreams without a hair salon!

Editors’ Pick: The Highs and Lows of Fall 2016 Footwear

If you’ve been perusing fashion magazines and observing street fashion, super high, tottering heels are no longer the order of day. Unless you are a high-fashion model walking in an haute couture show, having a view from the top due to mountainous high heels are not a part of your wardrobe anymore. Most women are opting for style with comfort, and if they decide to don a pair of heels, the height is sensible, nor precipitous

For fall 2016 Fashion Reverie has come up with a range of footwear styles that meet consumer’s every need without sacrificing style and chicness for comfort. Remember, the day of suffering for fashion are over, style and comfort are increasingly becoming compatible bedfellows!!

Image courtesy of the Bromley Group

Latigo image courtesy of the Bromley Group

Who says flats have to be boring or just an opt-out for consumers who have tired of heels? Designed with the free-spirited woman in mind, Latigo combines urban flair with vintage flair to create footwear that reflects retro style funneled through a prism of modern sensibility. Latigo’s fall 2016 flats come in a wider range of colors and embellished details; perfectly suitable for that consumer that wants comfort and style in one package.

For fall 2016 Pikolinos reinvents itself with surprising new shapes, finishes and key designs. With functional purity being the brand’s raison d’etre this season the women’s collection has updated the traditional Pikolinos shapes with practical and comfortable alternatives that have a handcrafted feel but are still aligned with the latest trends. The subtly exaggerated proportions of chunky soles and large tongues are just some of the details. And who can beat a jazzed sneak with sneaks and a fur tongue!! Pikolinos, you rock for fall 2016!!

No fall footwear roundup would be complete including a duck boot. Remember, wet and frosty weather is only a few months away and why not look fashionable in a decked out duck boot. Sporto, the original creator of the Duck Book, has partnered with Vibram, innovators of outdoor footwear, to create a special duck book for its 40th anniversary.

The Sporto brand’s unmatched heritage in designing traditional weather-resistant duck boots will be shored up by the development of a Vibram IceTrek outsole technology collection, an addition that’s seen as a natural evolution considering Sporto’s commitment to design for “Yesterday, Today, and Tomorrow.”

“We’re excited to commemorate the Sporto Duck Boot’s 40th Anniversary with a partnership that brings this all-weather classic style to the next level of performance and functionality,” states Brandy McCarty, Senior Vice President of Brand Strategy for Eastman Group and Sporto. “It’s the ideal way to kick off a year of projects and partnerships to celebrate this iconic American brand.”

Pointed-toe flats are not just for guys. Remember, if Janelle Monae can get away with this style and cause a fashion sensation in this men’s style, why can’t you. And Nina Originals has just the right pair for you in black suede or black patent leather. Add to that some tan suede booties and you are certainly ready for fall 2016!!

Beauty Alert: Bright, Bold Hair for the Summer Music Scene

Images courtesy of pinterest.com

Images courtesy of pinterest.com

OK, it’s the end of July but that doesn’t mean you are going to be stuck with an outdated hairstyle for the summer music concert season. Whether you attending music concerts featuring Alicia Keys, Blake Shelton, Jessica Simpson, or The Band Party at the Rio Olympics—wouldn’t that be a dream, partying in Rio with pop/country music sensation The Band Party— your coif should demand attention.

There is still some time left!! Remember, summer music concerts don’t end til around Labor Day!!  This concert season, ditch the basic black in favor of an array of rainbow brights!  To keep the look downtown cool rather than cartoonish, expert colorist with Schwarzkopf, Lyndell Mansfield, gave us a few colorful suggestions.

Mansfield recommends a watercolor effect for a bright twist.  “Take a painterly approach with this particular look the blending of purples into blues give such depth and character to the hair, and you can experiment with any of the shades—there are no rules!”

Collages789To get the look you’ll need to begin by pre-lightening your hair (if required) to a “perfect light blonde.”  Mansfield suggests Schwarzkopf LIVE Intense Lightener Max Blonde.  Now you can begin applying the dye.  Massage in Schwarzkopf LIVE Ultra Brights of Pastel Electric Blue Colour Cream from the tube directly onto the roots of the hair.  Make sure to blend the color out into the first few inches of hair.  Section off and secure the top part of the hair with a clip. To create the lighter blue shade, Mansfield suggests mixing Schwarzkopf LIVE Ultra Brights or Pastel Electric Blue with the hydrating conditioner in pack.  “Apply to the mid lengths of the hair, taking care to “smudge” the color into the existing vibrant blue at the top of the hair to create a gradual blend. Remove the top section from the clip and do the same to those lengths.”

Last but not least, it’s time for the purple.  You can create this shade by mixing Schwarzkopf LIVE Ultra Brights of Pastel Purple Punk the same way you did with the blue.  Apply the purple shade throughout the mid lengths and ends of hair “again taking care to smudge into the blue to create a gradual blend.”  Let the color sink into your hair for 20 minutes and rinse!

Or play up a candy stripe like this gorgeous pastel ‘do.  “This is such a pretty summer color blend.  Experiment with a hybrid of candy-colored stripes that you love best and blend them together to create this soft pastel-Grunge look,” Mansfield explains.

To recreate the look at home start again by lightening hair, to create a soft base to apply colors to.  Then mix your dyes with the conditioner packets until you achieve the colors you’re after.  For this look, Mansfield used Raspberry Rebel, Purple Punk, Electric Blue and Pillar Box Red.  Then start by sectioning and pinning your hair into small knots.  “This technique will ensure multi-tonal strew placement and the ‘Candy Stripe’ effect.” Untwist the knot from one section and paint the strands with your chosen shade.  Apply the color generously and make sure “smudge” or rather massage the color from root to tip.

Then twist the hair back into a knot and once again, secure it with a bobby pin.  Continue this process until all the knots have been dyed.  Mansfield recommends doing one color first then changing gloves before applying the next color.  You may need to enlist the help of a friend. Let the colors permeate for 20 minutes before rinsing it out and styling!

Want to get the look without making a full on commitment?  Try COLORSMASH’s Color Kissed Hairspray that delivers vibrant colors without the damage or permanence.  Making a big splash at Cosmoprof North America 2016, in Las Vegas this year these bright colors wash out easily in one to three shampoos!  Since the color envelopes the hair without penetrating the cuticle the hair stays touchable soft with a light hold.  Plus theses sprays are formulated with added nutrients in them such as aloe vera, grape seed, avocado and sunflower seed to leave your hair shiny and hydrated!

Men’s Beauty Alert: Putting Your Best Face Forward for Fashion Week

New York Fashion Week: Men’s spring 2017 is just a few days away. And for those attending, it is a must to look you best. However, looking your best for Fashion Week means two very different things for men and women.  Women tend to spend a lot of time plucking, waxing, contouring, strobing, lining, straightening, curling, tanning, and dieting their way to looking their very best.  Men, on the other hand, tend to do just a little less—or dare we say it, do nothing at all.  Whether you take a little more pride in your appearance, or follow a more traditional laid-back approach, it’s time to up your game!

Fashion Reverie spoke with some of the top experts in the field to find the best ways to get guys spruced up and ready for any big occasion.   Dr. Michael Swann, owner of Swann Dermatology  & Esthetics and Esthetician, Founder and CEO of Beautifully You By Jean-Claude Inc., Nadjamy Jean-Claude.

Dr. Swann courtesy of swanndermatology.com

Dr. Swann courtesy of swanndermatology.com

“Although men are getting more comfortable with skin care, taking care of your skin is still a faux pas in some circles if you are a man,” Dr. Swann confirms.  A frequent lecturer on Mohs micrographic surgery, complex facial reconstruction, injectables including Botox and fillers, resurfacing and other advanced laser procedures, Dr Swann is also nationally respected for his expertise in laser and cosmetic dermatology. Plus he considers himself to be a “low-maintenance man who really wants to have good skin.”

Many men admit to skipping a skin care regime in lieu of regular soap and Jean-Claude expresses how many women do as well.  “However, the skin on our face is not equivalent to the skin on our bodies.  Unless one is using a special facial soap, many soaps are comedogenic, clogging the pores and highly alkaline,” Jean-Claude shares.  “The combination of the minerals in hard water with soap not only throws off the PH balance of one’s skin but creates an insoluble film on the skin.” This is a major issue since inflammation is caused when your skin’s PH is too high or too low.

So if you’ve never dove into the world of skin care, where should you start?  “Everyone should follow a basic skin care regiment consisting of three steps: Wash, Tone and Moisturize.  As for men their skin is 25% thicker than women and less sensitive so a great facial wash should include an exfoliant in it.  Exfoliation removes dead skin cells, dissolves the desmosomes, softens skin, and stimulates cell production. Using a toner is vital.  Toners not only bring back the PH balance to the skin, but closes the pores naturally, refreshes and cleans the skin.  Imagine washing your clothes but not rinsing, that is the importance of a toner.  A moisturizer with SPF is great.  Moisturizer seals in moisture and protects the barrier layer of the skin,

it can also hydrate and balance the oil-water moisture content of the skin,” Jean-Claude explains.  “It is important to know your skin type to match the right product to your skin’s needs.  Most men have acne or ingrown hairs from shaving, if they are not using products with AHA’s (Alpha Hydroxy), Sylocilic Acid, Vitamin A, or ingrown hair serum they might not find that product effective.”

If that sounds like a little too much Jean-Claude recommends a face and body wash while in the shower, then apply a toner before you shave and moisturize afterwards.  Or you can go even more low-maintance with one product that does it all.   “A product that is sort of an all-in-one is a good option for someone who wants easy, but also wants it all.  I like Skin Medica’s TNS Essential Serum as my ideal all-in-one.  It has tons of growth factors, peptides, moisturizers and a mild skin lightener alpha-arbutin,” Dr Swann recommends.

“Good skin comes from good care, but it takes commitment,” explains Dr. Swann.  “I use the analogy of the gym with some guys.  You can’t build a sculpted physique in a week.  It takes a good plan and commitment.  Skin care is the same.  You need a good plan that takes into consideration both your goals and your assets, including specific skin type and concerns.”  While you can’t substitute regular care, to get a little extra glow right before a big event there are a few things to consider.  First and foremost, Jean-Claude recommends that days before the event to lay off the red meat, sugars and alcohol and drink plenty of water.  She also explains the importance of a good night’s rest.  Then try a peel or mild laser procedure.  Dr. Swann suggests a mild peel such as glycol acid peel that will show results even as little as 5 days before a big event.  However, he shares that it’s best to keep in mind that, “peels work even better when done in series, so if you have time to get a Jessner’s peel 3 to 4 weeks before and a lighter glycolic the week before Fashion Week, your skin will glow.”

Beauty Trend: Prism and Thermal Highlighters

Prism_Highlighter_zliving

The prism highlighter trend has taken the Internet and social media by storm and inspired a wave of other colorful beauty-inspired looks. The original color palette, designed and handmade by Bitter Lace Beauty founder, Jenna Georgescu, gives the effect that the wearer is standing next to an actual prism of color, the soft rainbow effect glowing lightly on her face.

Perhaps it’s our love of all things rainbow and unicorns … or the delicate yet interesting sheen it leaves on the wearer, but the prism trend took off.  In an interview with Racked, Georgescu explains she released Prism specifically for St. Patrick’s Day, but after it took off she made it a permanent part of her collection.

Image courtesy of Bitter Lace Beauty

Having a problem keeping up with the huge demand, Georgescu has been expanding her company.  “I knew Prism was a unique color that hasn’t been created in a highlighter form before us, but I don’t think I was at all ready for this,” she explained.

Racked went on to ask about the best way to apply Prism (assuming you can get your hands on a pot of it that is) to which Geogescu reported the best way to apply is to simply use your fingers.  “You can go back and forth in the same direction to blend the colors into each other. If you would like to use a brush I find a dense contour brush works in a pinch. Use a side to side motion rather than swirling around.”

To push the colorful highlighter trend even further, makeup artist Iry Randrasana introduced the next Instagram trend sweeping your newsfeed:  The Thermal Highlighter.  Designed to mimic thermal imagery, this breathtaking effect is created by mixing a rainbow of colors with the lightest in the center for an illuminating technicolor sheen.

While the look has gained Randrasan a lot of attention, she was just as surprised as any of us. “The thermal highlighter look was not supposed to be a thermal highlighter actually. That is a term that other people came up with … But it sounds cool. It was actually inspired by a photo that MarceloCantu shared on his Instagram and I just tried to recreate it.”  Randrasan shares.

“It was one of the fastest and easiest looks I have ever made and I was really surprised when it got shared everywhere—from people on Youtube to articles in online magazines …” Randrasan explained.  “I still do not understand why people like the look so much, it was just fun for me and I am just happy that others find it fun as well.”

What can we expect next from this accidental trendsetter?  “I would like to focus on things other than beauty … My dream is to use my social media [accounts] to make a good difference in the World. Beauty is fun and all but I do not want to live for myself,” Randrasan explains. “I would like to donate to a lot of charities … I was brainstorming yesterday about a fundraiser I want to make on my [Youtube] channel to help a little boy in Madagascar that is working as a bus cleaner and earns $1.50 a day to feed his siblings.”

Check out more of Iry’s amazing thermal looks as well as her other gorgeous beauty creations and help her make a difference by following her on Youtube at CookiechipIry or Instagram @iryrandrasana. To purchase your own Prism Highlighter or any one of Jenna’s other fabulous creations check out her shop at www.bitterlacebeauty.com, but be prepared as there is a 9–10 month pre-order wait time.
