Editors’ Pick: Beth Ditto #2, the Second Collection

Beth Ditto_Second_Collection_01Big girls rule!! Especially, if you are Beth Ditto.

If you are not aware of Beth Ditto, then you must have been hiding under a rock!! As the lead singer for the indie rock band Gossip since its inception in 1999, Ditto has described herself as “a fat, feminist lesbian from Arkansas,” and has rallied against the fashion industry for its lack of positive-body images for large women. This rallying cry has given Beth Ditto the opportunity to walk in Jean-Paul Gaultier’s spring 2011 show, collaborate on a cosmetic line with MAC, and in 2009 launch her first plus-size clothing line with women’s clothing retailer Evans.

At 5`1 and 210lbs, Ditto has been a fierce advocate for unconventional style and plus-size fashion. Ditto’s unconventional style centers on vintage clothes, Art Deco, and the irreverent rock n’ roll style of music icons like Grace Jones and Blondie. And while her collaboration with clothing retailer Evans was an “international success” and the “collection struck a nerve with its iconic pieces,” Ditto was not satisfied.

And that dissatisfaction has led Ditto to launch her second fashion collection. Believing that large women don’t have to shy away from oversized garments or silhouettes that are not necessarily form flattering, Ditto launched a new collection, Beth Ditto Season One, in February. Due the overwhelming success and response to the inaugural collection, Ditto is back with the second collection, Beth Ditto #2.

Beth Ditto_Second_Collection_02“I want all kinds of fat girls to feel amazing in these clothes! We had such a great response to the first collection—specifically the fact that there were shapes there which people couldn’t find at this size before. We’ve really dialed that up this time! It’s even more sculptural and feels more unapologetic. We’re still transcending the idea of trends; I know I’ll still loves these shapes years from now,” explained Ditto.

Beth Ditto #2 brings back some of the best-loved shapes from Season One, but re-imagined. There are new silhouettes in denim and silk, architectural style shift dresses with cinched waists, a cocoon-shaped wool coat, through to new takes on the relaxed, dropped-shoulder jersey styles from Season One.

And Ditto’s love affair with makeup is front and center in the sophomore collection. Prints include vibrant color-pop eye pencil shavings, dripping red nail polish and three-dimensional, oversized eyelashes.

Additionally, Ditto used Instagram to cast real people, not curvy models, for the brand’s campaign.  Los Angeles–based Hannah Moon and Charles Jeffrey assisted in assembling the cast and directing the campaign, set in a chaotic house party that evokes the chaotic irreverent mood of the collection.

“When Beth asked me to work with her on this project, my gut reaction – literally, instantly!—was the idea of capturing how I felt the first time I discovered Beth’s music. The video for one of The Gossip’s first singles, “Listen Up,” was a starting point. We took a lot of the vibes from that and created this setting where interesting, free, real kids could dance in a messy room to music they love. I also really wanted to celebrate their amazing bodies in the same way the clothes do; There are so many great examples of bigger bodies in fashion campaigns but I’ve never seen one that I felt was very rock n roll… I’m so proud of this.”

The eleven-piece collection launched on November 1 and is available in US sizes 18–32. For more information, go to shop.bethditto.com.

Spring 2017 Trend Report: Rock it or Leave it on the Runway

As Paris Fashion Week comes to a close, fashion journalists, editors and fashion industry professionals look back all the trends coming off the runway. Each fashion week brings with it a new set of trends, some work only for the size 2, 6ft-tall supermodel types, others trends can be incorporated into the average consumers wardrobe.  Fashion Reverie breaks down some of our favorite and least favorite trends of New York Fashion Week: The Shows spring 2017 asking the question: is this a trend that can be rocked on Main Street or should this trend be left on the runway?

The Color Orange: Jenny Packham, Rag & Bone, and Narcisco Rodriquez

While orange can be a difficult color to wear for some, orange grabs attention and is very on trend. Warmer, brown complexions will want to lean towards oranges with yellow undertones while cooler, paler complexions will want to go with oranges that have blue undertones. If that doesn’t work for you, experiment with orange in accessories. Go with orange shoes, an orange purse or gloves, any accessory that plays down orange as a head-to-toe look. Rock it!!

Embellished Platform Shoes: Gucci, Dsquared2,  and Marc Jacobs

Many fashion pundits feel that platform shoes are a trend that should have died forever in the 70’s. Those clunky heels, now with crazy embellishments are a big stretch for most consumers. The embellishments seen in the spring 2017 collections can be a distraction from the clunk awkwardness of platforms. However, that distraction doesn’t take away that platform shoes can be a little dangerous. Can you say twisted ankles?

Marc Jacobs created a pair that has a whopping 8-inch height! Lose your footing in those and you’ll be heading to the Emergency Room. The fashion adventurer might embrace platforms, others will leave this trend where they found it, on the runway.

Natural Hair:  Ralph Lauren, Marchessa, and Michael Kors

Many designers bypassed the traditional 2 hours preshow hair fried, dyed and laid to said routine, letting models wear their tresses the way it came in, no product and natural curls only. Finally, a trend that is effortless. Roll out of bed, finger comb and go!   Rock it!!

Altuzarra spring 2017 image courtesy of Imaxtree

Wet hair look : Thakoon, Altuzarra, and Jason Wu

In the mood to douse your hair with tons of product that will take you a half hour to wash out, and make it appear as if you haven’t washed your hair in weeks? Many are saying wet hair looks sexy while others are saying it makes your hair look oily and unwashed.   Don’t you already spend enough money and time on your hair? Leave it.

Spring 2017 images courtesy of Getty Images

Exposed Bras: Alexander Wang, Altuzarra, Victoria Beckham, and Tory Burch

No, they didn’t forget to put on their shirts, a number of designers are predicting that bras as outerwear will be the look for spring 2017. And if you spend two hours a day working out and can bounce a quarter off your stomach, you might agree. But the average American woman cannot do that nor would this look be even remotely appropriate in 90% of her daily life. Unless you actually ARE a supermodel, you might consider leaving it on runway!!

Spring 2017 images courtesy of Getty Images

Spring 2017 images courtesy of Getty Images

Seam Splits: 3.1 Phillip Lim, DKNY, and Self-Portrait

Another trend from the spring 2017 runway season to take note of are tiny faux seam rips that expose an inch of two of skin. I’m sure many will pass on this pseudo grunge look saying it looks sloppy, but others will say it adds a slight sexiness that isn’t overt or vulgar and is a whimsical touch to otherwise pedestrian clothes. Leave it on the runway or rock it? You choose!!

NYFW Spring 2017 Beauty Trend: Undone Waves and Slept-in Makeup

Erin Fetherton Spring 2017 images courtesy of Seventh House PR

Erin Fetherton Spring 2017 images courtesy of Seventh House PR

The perfectly done look is well … done.  The new trend is tough, a bit messy and the perfect faux “I just woke up like this” (after-falling-asleep-in-my-makeup) look.

At Erin Fetherson, Joseph DiMaggio, Master Session Ambassador for Davines North America, wanted to give the hair the same “lightness and ease,” which is synonymous with her creations.  “I gave the girls undone waves, echoing the effortlessness of a second or this day blowout,” DiMaggio explains.  “I also want to play to each girl’s different hair textures, and the final result was a bit disheveled, but still cool girl chic.”  DiMaggio recommends Davines More Inside This Is A Dry Texturizer to help achieve natural messy looking waves.

Rebecca Minskoff spring 2017 images courtesy of essie.com, maybelline.com, and teenvogue.com

Rebecca Minskoff spring 2017 images courtesy of essie.com, maybelline.com, and teenvogue.com

Rebecca Minkoff mastered the city-girl cool style, literally turning the city street into her runway! To echo her style, TRESemmé created the perfect beachy but slept-on waves.  Lead by Jeanie Syfu, these textured waves were perfectly chic and very on trend!  The makeup echoed the same feel that was designed by lead artist Gato and fashion and beauty influencer, Amanda Steele for Maybelline.  The look is designed to be a bit messy and is perfect of the girl who jumps out of bed and runs straight out the door!

Start by applying Maybelline Dream Cushion Foundation (which will be launching next January!) lightly all over the skin like Syfu did backstage.  Next, Master Strobe Illuminating Face Stick in Golden should be applied lightly over the tops of the cheekbones and all the way up to the temples.  The real focus, however, is the eyes that were created by smudging black eyeliner onto the lids. Top that off with Expert Wear Mono Eye Shadow in Khaki Camo and a few coats of Falsies Push Up Angel Mascara on the top and bottom lashes.

Zero+Maria Cornejo images courtesy of PHYTO

“The soul and sensuality of the South” was brought forward in the beauty look at Zero + Maria Cornejo, proving undone waves transcend further south, well beyond the down-town-cool New York style.  Backstage, stylists created frizzy waves with a middle part to complement the designers’ collection.  To get the look, “S” shaped waves were made with both a 1″ and a 1 1/4″ curling iron.  Next waves were broken up and given that “messy” texture with a bit of PHYTO Professional Fiber Paste.  Lastly hair was twisted into four sections and allowed to sit before being let down and sprayed into place with PHYTO Professional Phytolaque Soi Light Hold Hairspray.

The best part is all these different versions of slept-on waves and smudged lined eyes are that they are very wearable and easy to recreate!  So sleep in your makeup after a night of partying … or just look like you did!

NYFW: The Shows Spring 2017 Beauty Trend: The Return of Romance

Marchesa spring 2017 image courtesy of harpersbazaar.com

Marchesa spring 2017 image courtesy of harpersbazaar.com

Who says romance is dead?  At New York Fashion Week: The Shows spring 2017, models were styled with classic and Renaissance painting-inspired looks were spotted everywhere!  Soft and graceful was at the order of the day, with hair stylists opting for flowing locks rather than precise and rigid coifs.  Makeup was kept innocent and rosy.  Fall back in love with these pretty, girly styles!

At Reem Acra, Carole Colombani, the lead French makeup artist for Maybelline wanted the look to be “very pretty and soft and light in the texture.  I wanted [the makeup] to feel like it’s printed on the skin.”

“My inspiration was Renaissance paintings.  The woman with super flush, healthy, perfect skin.”  Working with several different products, Colombani applied a mix of Corrector and foundation on the complexion.  For the eyes, she applied several different types of mascara, including Maybelline’s Spider and Push Up Mascaras.

To get that rosy glow, Colombani applies lipstick in Dark Berry to the models’ cheeks with her fingertips, starting from the center and then blending out.  “It’s just natural—as if the blood is coming through your veins giving you a cute tint.”  She also used the new translucent powder which is “white and super fine” to keep the look “a bit blurry, a bit velvety” rather than shiny.

Tory Burch spring 2017 images courtesy of Peter White/WireImage

The half-up style at Tory Burch was pretty as a picture, featuring soft waves and loose face-frame strands.  Redken Global Creative Director, Guido, created this easy style using Redken Windblown 05 and air drying the hair.  A curling iron was used on a few select strands.  Odile Gilbert, for Moroccanoil fashioned a grittier, more textured half ‘updo’ for Zac Posen’s runway show.  Wispy pieces add extra charm.   For that gritty texture, Gilbert sprayed Moroccanoil’s Dry Texture Spray all over the model’s tresses.

Katie Nealson also created a “soft flowy romantic [hairstyle] as a nice contrast to the shapes and black and white in [Miguel Vieria’s] Collection.”  Using a classic blow out along with a “very soft paste to give a sheen and luster to the hair.

Our love affair with soft feminine hair and charming rosy makeup is back and stronger than ever!

Spring 2017 Trend Report: Spiritual Awakenings

Spring_Trends_2017_Casastudios

The spring 2017 runway season is upon us and as such, the fashion world is abuzz with talk about cultural themes and motifs that will emerge as ubiquitous for the season ahead. Trends for spring 2017 have one thing in common— they all seem to borrow from a spiritual ethos—and still they could not be more diametrically opposed.

The first trend to be on the lookout for are Zen-inspired designs that are notable for their unfussy simplicity. Characterized by clean lines and edges and with particular stress on structure, this neo-modernist trend is expected to be rendered in layered looks and monochromatic earthy hues such as browns, subtle pink, and blues that conjure nautical allusions. Fashion forecasting firm, Fashion Snoops, calls an aspect to this trend “Raw Coast” and describes it as a “minimalism rooted in environmental and coastal classics.” This aesthetic stresses purity and utility and as such, silhouettes are oversized and tones are mellow.

Spring_Trends_2017_weconnectfashion_03

On the opposite end of the spectrum is the trend “inspired by the spirit of freedom that comes from an intense love affair with your surroundings,” says Fashion Snoops. Rich and lush locales stimulate heavily ornamented looks made from complex prints, jacquards, and heavy tapestry. With the thawing of diplomatic relations between the United States and Cuba, expect Havana to play a colorful role in this kaleidoscopic trend rife with off-the-shoulder styles and macramé fabrics, and ablaze in hot, tropical colors such as sunny orange and canary yellow. “As Cuba opens its doors to the world, its storied culture and exotic mysteries become an important design inspiration, placing focus on the intrepid spirit of a modern man and woman who crave the romance of the island’s brightly colored buildings and tropical beaches,” says Snoops. (For New York Fashion Week: Men’s spring 2017 Nick Graham and Carlos Campos referenced Cuba in their spring 2017 collections.)

Skirts will be voluminous, flared, and floral-inspired. Midriffs will be bared to the light of day as crop tops continue to take center stage and caftan-style dresses will be featured prominently as well, predicts global trend forecaster, WGSN, who have nicknamed this sartorial movement in which flowy fabrics, bucket bags and gladiator sandals reign supreme, “La Isla.”’ Fashion Snoops calls this variegated trend ‘Arise, ”stating that the theme “encourages us to be present, mindful and in harmony with today’s multicultural world.”

The final trend to be on the lookout for is what Fashion Snoops has called “Juxtapoze.” Here again, global travel references play a role. This time; however, there exists an eclectic mish-moshing of styles and ideas to yield unique layered looks culled from a variety of dissimilar sources. With this trend, stand out pieces form the focal skeleton around which experimental looks are constructed. The theme will give rise to textural contrasts on the runway as intricate laces are, for instance, paired with diaphanous silks or weighty jacquards pitted against crocheted material. From the Middle East to Japan to Russia, wanderlust kindles this trend with a diverse well from which stimulus is drawn and combined.

Ostensibly, there will be a little bit for everyone next season. From the understated brilliance of Zen, to the outspoken allure of tropical stylings and the space in between where juxtaposition occurs, spring 2017 trends promise to be thoughtful and to inspire reconnection with the self and the environment.

When temperatures start to drop and there is a very slight breeze in the air, then you know that special season has arrived, and I am not necessarily referring to autumn. If you live in New York City, you are all too familiar with the clacking of stilettos and a wide array of fashion—some fantastic and some overdone. All these symbols and new arrivals mark the return of New York Fashion: The Shows (NYFWS).

Every fashion season Fashion Reverie prepares a list of essential items that every editor, stylist and/or industry professional just cannot do with out. With Lincoln Center and Bryant Park being a not too long ago memory, the stability of having a lot of fashion shows in  mostly one place is a thing of the past. Though WME/IMG is using Moynihan Station and Skylight at Clarkson Square as central locations, industry professionals, more than ever, will have to do a lot of scurrying around to go to the 300-plus fashion shows  for spring 2017.

No need to fret, Fashion Reverie has you covered!!

As editors rush from Moynihan Station to Skylight Clarkson to Pier 59, one of the biggest dilemmas is  keeping that all-important, I-Phone charged. Well, if you have deep pockets Passavant and Lee has a great Port Attache and Portfolio Cases that works for both men and women. If bags from Passavant and Lee are just too pricey for budget, also from fab.com, somewhere between shoulder tote and full-blown knapsack, the Something Useful Messenger Bag from Something Strong is a great way to carry whatever you need. Two beige side pockets add to the main compartment’s ample storage space, while the bag’s fold-over design and bright blue canvas make it dashing and versatile. And at $49.99, the price is just right.

Everyone wants to look there best during NYFWS; however, with all the hustling and bustling from one venue to the next, comfort is a primary concern. LATTORI designer dresses were created with the idea that every dress should be visually expressive and capture a moment, a mood and tell its own story.  LATTORI has been seen on a number of celebrities including Catt Sadler, Chiara Ferragni, Angela Simmons, Fantasia Barrino, and Witney Carson. From puffed collared necks, cold-shoulders, off-shoulder silhouettes, to more structured velvet shapes with an edge, you’ll be sure to stand out this NYFW.

Editors and stylists work hard during NYFWS. Still, you have to look bright-eyed and fresh. With NUORI freshness is more than a concept, it is the best way to get the most out of any skincare product.  NUORI preserves the freshness of each skincare product by posting a use-by date and getting rid of all products that have expired.

NUORI brings two unique things to its skincare products: its active ingredients are not weakened by time-related breakdown and its ingredients are 100% free from preservatives and other synthetic additives normally used to prolong the shelf life of beauty products. And NUORI’s five facial products are perfect to give your mom that youthful glow, keeping her bright eyed and bushy tailed.
