Editors’ Pick: Laurent & Altieri Handbags

Genevieve_LaurentThe accessories market is oversaturated. There is no argument there. Yet, every season innovators and designers attempt to make their mark in the accessories market, jumping in headfirst, taking all the required risks.

Being risks adverse is what’s necessary for any brave soul in the fashion market. The fashion industry has always been an industry that compiles a lot of risk. What is trending today has no industry relevance a few months later. Still, the mercurial natural of the industry does not deter some very passionate folks.

And passion and craftsmanship is what Laurent & Altieri is all about. Launched in 2016, Laurent & Altieri designs bags that transition effortlessly from day to night, season to season, uptown to downtown.  It’s the perfect mix of sophistication, fun and function for the chic city woman.  Every piece makes a statement that reflects a unique personality.

Interestingly enough, co-owner Genevieve Laurent comes from the pharmaceutical world, a very dissimilar bedfellow when it comes to accessory design. “I’ve always had a passion for fashion and initially my mission was to design bags that could transport animals. One thing led to another and I met artisans in Florence and they convinced me that I should make handbags as accessories for humans and if I found a market for my designs, I could add bag transports for animals,” explained Genevieve Laurent.

Laurent & Altieri’s handbags follow the artisan tradition of Tuscany. “The leather from Tuscany is cowhide leather that is certified by authorities in the Tuscany region. They have to go through a unique tanning process that is endemic to the Tuscany region. The tanning and pasteurized process makes the leather unique to Tuscany and widely desired by leather brands around the world. The texture and smell of the leather is unique to the region and sets it apart from leather from other parts of the world,” details Laurent.

Still, Laurent & Altieri handbags go beyond craftsmanship and tradition. Using mostly sauvage leather, which is the leather developed from the softest part of the cowhide, Laurent & Altieri have the fingers on the pulse of the modern urban consumer is looking for. Handbags that express their personal style, can transition from day to night, and are utilitarian in scope. And Laurent & Altieri bags are organic sound, only using vegetable dye to tan and dye the leather instead of chemicals that are bad for the environment.

Named after famous Florentine women—Catherine de Medici (La Catherine), the Mona Lisa (La Gioconda)—leather products range from handbags to totes to laptop and tablet covers to small handbags. And the price points will not empty your pockets.

That said; the most outstanding feature of these handbags is that their style goes beyond changing trends and the quality and durability combined with affordable price points makes Laurent & Altieri handbags a great find. Just imagine all this quality and style from an actor and pharmaceutical writer. Who would’ve thought!!

Editors’ Pick: Bella Dahl’s 2016 Holiday Denim Bonanza

Bella_DahlIs it possible to have great comfort and a sense of fashion-forward style? Bella Dahl proves that it is possible.

Since 2010, Bella Dahl has become known for creating ultra-soft women’s essentials that pull influences from the laid-back, Southern California lifestyle. With garments made entirely in California, in the few years since its debut, Bella Dahl has become known for clothes that embody a sophisticated coastal vibe with modern silhouettes, textures, and unique, one-of-a-kind wash treatments that have an endlessly wearable feel.

In order to create the incredible, soft feel of the garments, particularly in their denim, Bella Dahl employs Tencel®.  Tencel® is a sustainable fabric, regenerated from wood cellulose. It is similar in hand to rayon and bamboo, both regenerated fabrics. Tencel® is also one of the most sustainable fabrics. And Bella Dahl has used Tencel® in his denim fabrics trademarked as Tencera™. Tencera™ fibers are typically very soft, absorbent, and durable—when dry or wet—and are wrinkle-resistant.

Downloads300Bella Dahl’s effortless chic designs have caught the attention of Jessica Alba, Sarah Jessica Parker, Heidi Klum, Chrissy Teigen, Kendall Jenner, Beyonce, Sincerely Jules and Jasmine Tosh. And these celebs will not be disappointed with Bella Dahl’s 2016 holiday collection.

Gone are the days when holiday collections were only glitzy, sparkly cocktail dresses, jackets and jumpsuits worn at the company holiday party or on New Year’s Eve. There can be a lot of downtime during the holidays, so why not relax in soft, comfortable clothes that not only reflects a modern sensibility, but also cuts down on the global footprint with eco-friendly fabrics.

Editors’ Pick: Lacoste 2016 Holiday Collaboration with Jean-Paul Goude

Downloads2962016 is the year of winning fashion collaborations. First, there is the match made in heaven, Tommy Hilfiger and Gigi Hadid. (If you haven’t seen the ads everywhere, you must be living under a rock.) A close second is Kenzo x H&M—already sold out!! Are there are other collaborations in 2016 too many to name.

All these myriad collaborations are an attempt to give a little sparkle, shine and splash to brands that need a dose of vitality and reinvention. Enter Jean-Paule Goude for Lacoste.

For several seasons now, Lacoste has primed the pump when it comes to reinventing traditional tennis clothes and adding a measure of splash and pizazz. (If you ever happen to attend any of the runway shows, you will observe that a lot of the garments go way beyond traditional tennis fare. Unfortunately, many of the pieces that elevate and push the fashion-forward envelope never goes into mass production.) And collaborations are nothing new for Lacoste. There was the ‘Peanuts’ collaboration of a couple of seasons ago and more recently, the collaboration with Maison Lesage. Still, this collaboration with Jean-Paul Goude for the Lacoste 2016 holiday collection pushes Lacoste even more toward the outré, though still a very consumer friendly an accessible outré.

In the past, Jean-Paul Goude has been known for his fashion illustrations, photography—Grace Jones’ album covers, Kim Kardashian in various states of reveal in Interview magazine—art direction and television commercial direction. In this collaboration with Lacoste, Jean-Paul Goude conspiring with Lacoste creative director Felipe Oliveira Baptista has redesigned the iconic Lacoste logo. This re-imaged logo reflects the Africa of Goude’s youth, his love of dance and his infatuation with the Bauhaus.

“As a kid, the crocodile has always been one of my favorite characters. The crocodile is a bad guy, but he is a bad guy with a heart. He is a star in my world,” explains Jean-Paul Goude. “My story [for this holiday campaign] is the momma and poppa [crocodile] are very worried about the future of their child. This possibility of making my characters is wonderful. It is an opportunity I cannot let go by.”

For the holiday season, the Lacoste by Jean-Paul Goude collection with a re-interpreted logo lands on a limited-edition collection of polos and leather goods, just in time for the most festive season of all.  Available in both short and long-sleeved version, it makes for a perfectly unique holiday gift. Lacoste by Jean-Paul Goude polos are also available for the youngest urbanites that want to dress up this holiday season. Contemporary bomber jackets for men and women feature redesigned Lacoste logo front and back for a maximum effect. The new playful logo landed on the brand’s favorite Chantaco bag and clutch, creating an ultimate gift to tuck under a Christmas tree.

Editors’ Pick: Paola Hernandez’s Fall 2016 and Spring 2017 Collections

Paola Hernandez spring 2017 images courtesy of The Eighth Floor

Paola Hernandez spring 2017 images courtesy of The Eighth Floor

There is no debate that launching and establishing a fashion brand is an arduous task, particularly in a market that is oversaturated and brimming over with fashion brands from not only designers, but film and pop celebrities and sports figures. Still, every season design schools churn out a significant number of designers who expect to have a career in the fashion industry, hoping that they get a chance to excite editors, buyers, stylists and consumers with their collections.

Unfortunately, most of these young designers never get traction in the industry. Paola Hernandez will not be one of those designers. With so many Hispanic designers/brands becoming a formidable and innovative force in the industry—Carolina Herrera, Oscar de la Renta, Narciso Rodriquez, Dalmau Custo, Angel Sanchez, and others—Paola Hernandez fits easily to that coterie of Latin designers that will continue to make the fashion industry evolve. Paola Hernandez sets herself apart from other emerging contemporary brands for the relevance of her brand’s aesthetic to present conscious, timely collections, but also for the deep symbolism behind each design element of her pieces.

After studying fashion design at the esteemed Central St. Martin in London and shoe design at ARS Sutoria in Milan, Hernandez went back to her native Mexico City to launch her own brand, with the aim of starting a dialogue about philosophical concepts by utilizing fashion as its language. Having established her brand in Mexico, four years later Hernandez moved to New York City with the aim of giving her band more of a global presence.

Her fall 2016 and spring 2017 collections both draw inject influences from her cultural background while staying grounded in its appeal to female consumers who have a modern sensibility expressed through comfortable clothes made from highest quality textiles and yarns from Japan and Italy, manufactured throughout the US and Mexico. And just as Hernandez’s clothes reflect an oeuvre of modernity and fashion-forward sensibility, so does her footwear.

Most garments from both fall 2016 and spring 2017 collections can be mixed and matched from separately with other garments in the collection or things that are already in a woman’s wardrobe, but also can be dressed up or down for daytime functionality or a night out on the town. This utilitarian aspect of the collections is a direct result of the brand’s ‘less is more’ aesthetic and concentration on fine fabrics.

Paola Hernandez spring 2017 images courtesy of The Eighth Floor

Paola Hernandez spring 2017 images courtesy of The Eighth Floor

Understanding that “knowing our position in time is essential to plotting in the universe,” Paola Hernandez’s spring collection is based on the idea of connecting with our foundation, roots and inner core. References Hernandez’s Mexican roots, the spring 2017 collection represents her journey and honors the path that lead her to this present time. The primary colors, used throughout the color, represent the colors of Mexico City.
