“In the United States 75% of sneakers are bought for aesthetics and lifestyle [rather] than performance”, says Elinor Block of Who What Wear. As a continuing spring/summer street style trend, Fashion Reverie explores the lifestyle aesthetic that brands sneakers as a staple to daily lives. Many designers have adapted street style due to the rise of fashion and sport- enthusiast consumers, who inspire this continuing street style trend. Editors’ Pick: Chu Chu Loo

Where do designers find sources of inspiration? And can that source inspiration create the signature look of a fashion brand. John Varvatos is consistently inspired by rock n’ roll and that reference point has been a continued design aesthetic for the brand. Donna Karan created a fashion brand that was based on her own personal style, a style that has continued to evolve, but a design point of view that was appealing to the urban, modern working woman. And Ralph Lauren’s design aesthetic has evolved from his love of American Southwest iconography.

Naming a fashion brand after a favorite pet is an unexpected direction for an emerging brand; however, we live in an era where rules are being broken every day and the celebration of individuality is the order of the day. That said; when Marylynda MacDonald decided to name her fashion brand after her beloved muse, her cat Chu Chu Loo, there was less shock and awe.

Launched this spring/summer, Chu Chu Loo is borne out of artistic expression and an ethos of individualism. Using the finest quality fabrics, the Chu Chu Loo collection enhances a woman’s natural elegance, bringing to life the artist within.

With a 18-year background in visual arts and design, Marylynda MacDonald developed Chu Chu Loo out of a need to provide women with bold colorful pieces that accentuated natural beauty. And with a very short time in the market, Marylynda MacDonald has already placed her garments on such celebrities and Karreuche, Terri Hatcher, and Daniele Staub.

Marylynda MacDonald’s background as an artist is infused into her spring/summer 2018 pre-collection, evidenced in the signature Perez Print of splattered paint pants (inspired by real estate mogul Jorge Perez who commissioned the designer’s first commercial project. Also, prominently featured in this inaugural collection are images of MacDonald’s beloved pet, Chu Chu Loo.

Chu Chu Loo is now available online and will soon be available in the Chu Chu Loo standalone store in Naples, Florida. For more information, go to chuchuloo.com.—William S. Gooch

Tragically, just 8 years later at the young age of 26, Gia Carangi would succumb to an AIDS–related infection, having acquired the virus while addicted to heroin. Drawing on hundreds of interviews with Gia’s family, lovers, friends, and colleagues, Thing of Beauty creates a poignant portrait of an unforgettable character—and a powerful narrative about beauty and sexuality, fame and objectification, mothers and daughters, love and death.

Delightfully underscored by Coddington’s own pen-and-ink illustrations, Grace: A Memoir will introduce readers to the colorful designers, hairstylists, makeup artists, photographers, models, and celebrities with whom Grace has created her signature images.

Editors’ Pick: OKV Bags

Does the fashion market need another handbag line? Well, that depends on who you talk to. Though the women’s handbag market is flooded with a plethora of handbags, from Kate Spade, Coach, Michael Kors to Bottega Veneta, Gucci, and Chanel—all well known handbag lines—the men’s bag accessory market has room for niche brands that can target specific consumers.

Wayne Mayers of OKV handbags is attempting to fill that niche. “The men’s handbags market still lags way behind women’s handbags. I recognized that I could fill a niche in the men’s handbag market. I think a handbag itself is so iconic and can denote luxury. If you look at old movies, having a great bag is a status symbol,” explains OKV creator Wayne Mayers.Self-taught and passionate about fashion, Wayne Mayers, through trial and error came to understand that men’s handbags was to be his creative d’oeuvre and tour de force. “When I first had the idea to pursue a career in fashion, I started sketching sweaters and jeans. I noticed from the sketches that every element I sketched had an element of leather in it. I began to understand that I loved and was more engaged in leather than having a garment line. I had to decide which direction I was going in. And ultimately I settled on handbags,” details Mayer.

Designed in Toronto, Canada and produced in the Tuscany region of Italy, OKV’s collection of men’s leather bags and accessories are handmade using the artisan tradition of natural tanning, reducing the carbon footprint of the textile industry, while joining quality craftsmanship and tradition to create a unique product. Mayer contends, “a quality leather bag is an iconic and staple piece in any wardrobe and I want to introduce the world to a quality crafted product, without the environmental stress of traditional leather production.”

Still, finding market traction is an arduous task in a market where name recognition is so important and many burgeoning brands fall by the wayside due to manufacturing costs and market contraction. Mayer is not daunted by the statistics and is primed to bring an ethically friendly, worker-friendly product to male consumers. “My plan is to demonstrate that we go straight to the source and we are extremely ethical, making sure our workers make a living wage. The quality of our bags is top of the line. Unlike women, who usually have several handbags, male consumers may have one or two great bags, so quality is very important.”

For its debut collection, Mayer is producing six bag styles. This six-piece collection has something for almost every guy, ranging from a duffle bag, and a weekender to a backpacker and a workbag. “Our style of bags are the most used styles by male consumers,” admits Mayer. “Our demographic travels often, so our weekender and duffel bag is great for travel. Our customer is usually a city dweller, so we have a workbag or a business bag for that guy. We have a marsupial that is OKV’s version of a fanny pack. And coincidentally, fanny packs—which reference the 1980s—are on trend right now. Our marsupial, or fanny pack, is so unique because rarely do you see a leather-structured fanny pack on the market.”

                 All images courtesy of OKV

All OKV products are tanned using fruit pods, leaves and tree bark to create a luxury line of leather goods designed to be durable and age with perfection.  Inspired by street style and vintage luxury craftsmanship, OKV’s designs incorporate chic and classic elements while paying close attention to detail to create a cohesive collection of top-quality men’s bags and accessories. “Primo Edition” styles include: hold all ($1350 USD), tote bag ($800 USD), rucksack ($1050 USD), belted satchel ($550 USD), wallet ($250 USD) and cardholder ($160 USD).—William S. Fashion Reverie’s Spring/Summer 2018 Fragrance Roundup

“A woman who doesn’t wear perfume has no future”—Coco ChanelThe warm temperatures are finally here, especially if you live in the Northeast, and its time to think about transitioning from the warm, earthy fragrances that we love so much in cooler weather to cool, minty, floral and fruity fragrances of spring and summer. Fashion Reverie has assembled a roundup of great fragrances for spring/summer 2018 that will not break the bank and will also have you feeling and smelling as fresh as spring flowers.

Jo MaloneJo Malone launched in 1991, a breath of fresh air in the world of fragrance (pun intended). At the time Elizabeth Taylor’s wildly successful perfume line inspired dozens of poor quality celebrity scents. The market was flooded with cheap overworked sweet perfumes that had the fashion world gagging

Enter Jo Malone, a profoundly British company with its roots steeped in 18th century perfume making. Malone’s “Cologne Intense” aromas focused on simple high-quality ingredients light enough to not overwhelm, but still be long lasting.

For spring 2018, the fragrance brand is introducing Blossom Girls, a trio of limited edition florals that are fresh, fun, and full of joy.

Nashi Blossom Limited Edition Cologne

This not too sweet floral has fruity crisp top notes of nashi fruit, pear, and apple softened with base notes of rose and white musk.

Sakura Cherry Blossom Limited Edition Cologne

A light playful scent slightly sweet with subtle layers of cherry blossom, rose and violet blended with a sparkling base note of bergamot makes for a sweet and cool summer fragrace.

Plum Blossom Limited Edition Cologne

This fragrance is a bright mixture of plum blossoms and yellow plum fruit on a canvas of clean white musk.

Hard Candy Fragrances launched in 2007, specializing in fruity florals. Now, they are coming out with two new scents for spring/summer 2018.

Hard Candy Pink is a fun, fruity scent perfect for daytime. With top notes of passionfruit and tangerine, mixed with peony and jasmine and grounded with vanilla sugar and musk it’s ideal for a trip to the beach or going out to lunch.

Hard Candy Black is an exciting sexy scent you’ll want to wear for a night of dancing and romance. With top notes of mango and kiwi middle notes of quince blossom and vanilla blended with bottom notes of iris and warm amber, you’ll be irresistible.

Both scents are available as eau de parfum and body mists from Walmart.

Proenza Shouler’s ArizonaProenza Schouler designers Jack McCollough and Lazaro Hernandez were so inspired by a vacation to Arizona they decided to create their first fragrance. Arizona hinges on an innovative, night-blooming cactus flower accord, which has been blended with rich notes of orris root. Even the bottle was designed to resemble a piece of quartz Hernandez found in the desert.

Proenza Schouler – Arizona available at Saks Fifth Avenue.

Krigler Villa BordigheraHistoric perfume house Krigler pulls another classic from their vault for a limited-edition relaunch. Originally created by Albert Krigler in 1920, the unisex, citrus fragrance was commissioned by Italian playwright, who wanted one of his favorite vacation spots—Bordighera in Italy—captured in a bottle, and it spotlights the resort town’s lemon trees.

Krigler Villa Bordighera 20 is available at krigler.com.

Bond No 9 Spring FlingWhile New York City doesn’t exactly evoke images of blossoms, truthfully there are plenty of outdoor spaces blooming with flowers. Places like Central Park, Bryant Park, and The Highline inspired this sparkling blend of lily of the valley, passionflower, honeysuckle, jasmine, freesia, amber, and musk.

Bond No 9 Spring Fling is available at bondno9.com.

Stella McCartney’s STELLA PEONYThis fragrance transports you immediately to a blossoming English garden with its romantic blend taken up a spicy notch with the peony scent melded with black pepper, cedar, patchouli, and amber.

Miu Miu L’eau RoseePrada’s rebel Miu Miu brand is once again breaking the mold by introducing a new crisp floral fragrance, L’eau Rosee. The perfume may have the rose in the name, yet the fragrance does not! The moniker was chosen because of the pink hue of the scent. The aroma is lily of the valley and cassis buds tightly wrapped in notes of sophisticated musk, with additional notes of gardenia, bergamot, tuberose, jasmine, white pepper, honeysuckle, ginger and cedar.

Miu Miu L’eau Rosee is available at Sephora.com.

Wearing fragrance during the warmer seasons does come with its own set of complications. Here are few tips to keep in mind.

Change your scent at least every six months. Some women find a signature perfume and wear it exclusively. The problem with this is over time your nose acclimates to the aroma and stops smelling the fragrance. As a result, many women overapply their scents.

Avoid perfume and perfume oils. During summer months the heat can amplify fragrance. Perfumes and perfume oils can be too heavy during warm seasons. Use colognes and eau de parfums to avoid choking companions and co-workers.

Take stock of all your scents. With the heat increasing fragrance you want to make sure you’re not overdoing it in other ways. Deodorants (which some apply more heavily in warm weather), shampoos, lotions, hair products and perfume all co-mingling can add up to a stinky stew. One way to circumvent this is switching to some unscented products, like your lotions, shampoos, hair products and deodorants, for the spring and summer.

Be aware of others: It’s allergy season. In certain parts of the United States some people are facing horrible pollen counts. In small, enclosed spaces even if you go easy on the fragrance, you could be making friends or companions miserable. You may want to consider skipping it altogether.

That said; fragrance courtesy tips in mind and Fashion Reverie’s roundup on spring/summer fragrances should have you prepped to luxuriate in fragrance for the warmer months.

Fashion Reverie’s Alternatives to Meghan Markle’s $300,000 Bridal Gown

OK, the royal wedding between Meghan Markle and Prince Harry is now history. However, the narrative continues, especially narrative commentary about the lovely Givenchy gown that Meghan Markle wore. With a price tag of over $300,000 and countless hours of craftsman ship, Meghan’s gown is way out of the preview or budget of most potential brides. But, shouldn’t it be? After all, Meghan married into the wealthiest royal family—the Windsors—in history. On the heels of the inaccessibility of Meghan’s bridal gown, Fashion Reverie, with the help of so key bridal insiders, has assembled some wonderful alternatives for that savvy consumer that wants similar bridal fare without the steep cost. Granted these bridal alternatives are not for tight purses, but the cost does come down from a third of a million dollars. Whew!!

                                                   Images courtesy of Atelier PR

INES DI SANTO is always a favorite of Fashion Reverie. And our two bridal select alternatives to Meghan Markle’s bridal gowns come from her spring 2018 collection. True to form, Fashion Reverie was front and center at Ines di Santo’s spring 2018 bridal show.Simplicity was a key element in di Santo’s spring 2018 bridal collection with the artist and fashion editor in mind. “This season became a dance with the artist and the editor in my mind. Not a stitch more than what was needed, yet full license to push a design that was simply more,” explained di Santo.

Using techniques that are often found only in Couture design, Ines plays to the feminine side of a woman’s beauty in both her bridal and evening collections. Raised in Buenos Aires with parents that inspired and supported her interest in the arts, Ines studied both fine art and design in Argentina and Milan. The signature, rich touch seen in each collection reflects the designer’s Italian and Spanish heritage. INES DI SANTO gowns are available at top retails including Neiman Marcus and Bergdorf Goodman and additional authorized retailers worldwide.

Interestingly, JUSTIN ALEXANDER’s spring 2019 bridal collection contained gowns that fit nicely into Markle’s ‘less is more’ design aesthetic. (Again, Fashion Reverie was all in the mix at JUSTIN ALEXANDER’s spring 2018 show. And in the front row, I might add!) Focusing his spring 2019 bridal collection on minimalism juxtaposed against diversity and modernity in style, JUSTIN ALEXANDER ‘s spring 2019 bridal collection demonstrated range in silhouette funneled through the lens of simplicity and elegance. Since its humble roots, JUSTIN ALEXANDER has become a contemporary designer and manufacturer of mid- to high-end bridal gowns and accessories. Each design is distinctly recognized for its vintage inspiration paired with progressive details. JUSTIN ALEXANDER gowns are available in more than 1,500 authorized retailers worldwide.
