In a world gone collaboration crazy, it’s hard to not get caught up in the excitement.  Altuzarra is teaming up with Target, Alexander Wang is presenting a collection for H&M, and Jason Wu is sharing his designs with Lancome.  Yes, we love when high-end designers find ways to infiltrate the stores and brands we already love.  So while not a new concept, Fashion Reverie is pleased to share that the 3.1 Phillip Lim for NARS Nail collection is finally here!

NARS has had a longstanding relationship with Lim, working together for the past 14 seasons of New York Fashion Week.  By combining Phillip’s effortless design aesthetic with NARS commitment to high quality, the brands have created a set of nine limited edition nail polishes.  This collection inspired by the “colors that exist in the shadows” features rich hues, perfect for fall.

Lim gave us a sneak peek in February at New York Fashion Week, accessorizing all his models with Crossroads, a deep violet to complement his ‘rock the casbah’ theme and angled brows.  They have finally released the rest of the collection which includes Anarchy (a creamy alabaster), Dark Room (a deep sophisticated blue and a perfect to up your nail game and extend Fashion Reverie’s favorite summer polish colors into fall), Gold Viper—you guessed it, it’s gold alright, but more of a light platinum shade than a harsh yellowy gold—, Hell-Bent (an orange red), Insidious (a rich jewel toned black bronze), Other Side (a nice chocolate shade), Shutter (a beautiful deep green), and Wrong Turn (a metallic graphite).

The colors coincidentally just so happen to go really well with Lim’s purses.  So add a little Lim to your life with a wonderful fall manicure and if you feel so inclined, check out 3.1 Phillip Lim for a purse to complement that new manicure.

Beauty Tip: Achieving French Beauty

Downloads363There is something so magical about Paris.  It’s referred to as both the city of lights and the city of love, but in Fashion Reverie’s opinion, it’s really the city of beauty.  There’s just something so effortlessly elegant about a classic French look.  While we can’t transport you to Paris, we can give you some tips and tricks to bring out your inner French girl’s je ne sais quoi.

avene-cicalfate-restorative-skin-cream

“…The French love elegance and rawness, while American beauty is more glamorous. Think Marilyn Monroe,” explains Misha Shahzada, makeup artist for Artist & Agency.   “A proper skin regimen that keeps skin hydrated is essential to achieve this look. I love how Avène Cicalfate Skin Restorative Cream [which is actually a cream designed to help treat scratches, scrapes and burns] combined with a mist of Avène Thermal Spring Water gives skin that really healthy finish,”  Shahzada shares.  With such an emphasis on skincare it’s important to really take care of your face, Votre Vu Attentive Lait Pour Le Visage is a soft cleansing milk ideal for sensitive skin.  Not only will it gently remove your makeup, but it leaves your skin feeling soft and fresh.  Follow that up with Votre Vu’s Attentive Sérum Delicat Pour Le Visage, an organic sérum that helps reduce inflammation and lessen reactions from common allergens. Since it reduces redness and nourishes your skin, it’s a great product to use when you first wake up or later on in the day.

French_beauty_redone_01

Glowing skin and a great complexion is the perfect canvas; you don’t really need much else!  “Just a hint of a black or dark brown liquid liner and a matte red lipstick really completes that minimalistic French classic beauty look,” explains Shahzada.

Downloads364To master the perfect French girl hair we reached out to Clay Nielsen for Opus Beauty.  “Classic French hair is effortlessly polished. It’s less about products and heat tools. French hair is a simple style that shows the beautiful natural hair,” Nielsen clarifies as he stresses the importance of healthy hair. “… you need to start from the roots to get shiny beautiful hair. I recommend the René Furterer COMPLEXE 5, a French product that detoxifies and stimulates the scalp, so you naturally get that healthy looking hair. Then it’s as easy as putting it up in a twist or chignon. Simple and beautiful.”

Another great beauty trick is Klorane Dry shampoo with oat milk, not only is this a great product if you want to skip a day of washing your hair, but the oat milk really softens your locks and adds a little volume.  Plus, how can you not love a trick which saves you time getting ready in the morning? Now you’ll have time to pick up a bottle of French wine, order some macaroons and let loose your inner French femme.

Summer of Love Beauty

Collages372We’re in the middle of summer and Fashion Reverie is crazy about looks inspired by the 1960’s.  A little free love nostalgia is just what you need to achieve inner peace and fun loving hair.  The best part of this beauty routine is the complete simplicity.  The idea is to look naturally pretty, so keep it light and sheer, and let the real you shine through!

Makeup artist Lisa Eldridge suggests faking a rosy glow.  “Cheat making yourself look instantly fresh and more alive by using a multi-purpose lip and cheek tint, that’ll emphasize a dewy outdoorsy glow and can be easily topped up throughout the day if needed” explains Eldridge.  She recommends Bobbi Brown’s Pot Rouge, as well as, Chanel and Bourjois Creme Blush because  “… [they] can be slotted into pockets, are easy to apply and come with a built in mirror.”

Another great way to really enhance your skin is with an illuminator.  Nars’ Hot Sand Illuminator really enhances your look, it is the perfect highlighter with just a touch shimmer.  The best part is it’s so sheer you’ll forget you’re wearing it!

On your eyes try a vibrant color with a little luster such as CK One’s powder eyeshadow in Wipe Out (the perfect summer green with a touch of grown up sparkle) or Nars’ Dual-Intensity Eyeshadow in Himalia, the absolute most perfect topaz color, which works amazingly  when applied both dry (for a sheer finish) or wet (for added impact).  Heading away for the weekend and don’t want to pack your entire makeup kit?  tarte’s Rainforest After Dark is everything you could need in one handy little compact.  With six colored eyeshadows in nudes, plums and golds, a blush, bronzer, and highlighter tarte really hit it out of the park and is certainly a must to achieve a Summer of Love inspired look.  Ensure your lips are well hydrated with a great lip balm.  L’Oreal Paris’ Balm Pop in Bold Blush is such a sweet pink, perfect for those hot summer days.

Keep the hair soft and natural. (Who wants to plug in a hair straightener or curling iron when it’s hot out anyway?Try pretty waves or a chunky fat braid.  GHD recommends a Dip-dye faux fishtail. All you need is a clip-in extension such as Love Hair Extensions clip-in extensions and some colored chalk.  Start by tying your hair into a low side ponytail and wrap the extension around it.  Then split the hair (both real and fake) into two sections, crossover and twist.  Repeat all the way down the hair to create the braid.  Next pull out sections to add a little texture to your hair and give it that great un-done look we’re all after this season.  Finish the look by coloring the ends with chalk for a non-permanent hint of ombre.

Don’t forget to add some final touches, such as floral hair accessories (can you say flower crown?) and a little sparkle!

Let’s Face It

We all want an even glowing complexion.  bareMinerals, famous for their mineral foundation has come out with a new liquid foundation, bareSkin.  Made with the “bare minimum” amount of ingredients, it is applied with the innovative new perfecting face brush.  It’s so light on your skin, you’ll forget you’re wearing makeup; however, the new good-for-you formula consisting of lilac plant stem cells, vitamin C, and a coconut base, is both a tone-correcting foundation and a brightening serum!  Both their original powder foundation and new liquid formula blend smoothly, giving you a picture perfect, natural looking finish.  For consumers who have always shied away from bareMinerals in favor of the coverage that comes in a tube, bareSkin is for you.

Add that perfect sun-kissed bronze we’re all looking for with Guerlain’s Terracotta Sun Celebration Powder Compact.  This compact is like a bronzer and a blush all rolled into one.  Created to help celebrate the 30th anniversary of the first bronzer ever created, the Terrracotta Sun Celebration Powder Compact starts with a base of their best selling Terracotta, which is then infused with shades of corals and pinks to recreate that perfect flush you get from a little natural vitamin D.  A golden sun symbol sits in the middle of the compact to add just a touch of shimmer for the prefect bronze summer skin!

Give a Little Lip

Lighten up your summer look and add plenty of shine with gorgeous shades of pinks, corals, and watermelons from tart’s LipSurgence lip gloss collection.  To show your softer side, the soft mauve pink of blushing bride is a perfect option.  To really amp up the summer style, add a bright coral into your beauty routine such as tipsy, a sheer coral perfect for a day of summer fun.  For a bolder take on summer brights, true love might just be your newest obsession.  This watermelon shade feels flirty and fresh, perfect for any occasion.

The Eyes Have It

The warmer months are the best time to have a little fun with your makeup.  Ditch the traditional black liner for a colorful aqua.  Wink Eye Pencil by butter London in Holland Park is the perfect blue-green color with just a hint of shimmer.  The best part of this eyeliner is that it really lasts all day so you can feel confident that when you put it on in the morning, it will last well into the night!

For professional eye makeup at home, MAC Studio’s Sculpt Shade and Line may be your new best friend.  This three-in-one palette features two eyeshadows and one liner all in a teensy tiny pan, no bigger than a single eyeshadow.  While it won’t take up too much room in your makeup bag, it does deliver three different textures— matte, sparkle, and metallic allowing you to experiment and produce sculpted, 3D looks on par with your favorite magazine covers and advertisements.

Blues for the Beach

Screen-Shot-2014-07-06-at-6.11.09-PMThere’s something about the sound of the waves crashing on the shore that always leave us feeling a little more zen.  It turns out it’s not just the sound, but also the color of the ocean.  “Psychologically, blue is the opposite of red, it lowers blood pressure,” explains Leslie Harrington, executive director of The Color Association of The United States.  Jeannie Mai, host of “How Do I Look?” is completely aware of the serene effects of blue and recommends incorporating it into your style.  “I encourage women to wear blue when they want to create a calming essence… Wear it on a first date- something turquoise or a light aqua sweater… it makes a great first impression and creates relaxation.”

Now that the summer heat is in full swing, Fashion Reverie has rounded up our favorite beachy nail shades of azures, turquoises, and tropical greens.

BeachMani_makingwaves_2

With temperatures reaching in the high 80s you are probably yearning for a day at the beach. While luxuriating at the beach, dive right into a vibrant nail blue such as Morgan Taylor’s Making Waves.  This bright statement color is bound to make you feel relaxed and happy.

beachmani_DL_3

Deborah Lippmann’s Video Killed the Radio Star is a vibrant hue perfect for summer.  Described as “bombdiggity blue,” it’s certainly bold enough to fit in with Lippmann’s dynamic 80’s Rewind theme in addition to being the perfect seaside color.

BeachyMani_hideandgochic_4

For a calmer, slightly muted blue, we love Essie’s Hide and Go Chic.  The color is reminiscent of the darker blue waters of New England, which in turn creates a very nautical feel.

BeachyMani_CeruleanSea_7

If you’re dreaming of a tropical oasis CND VINYLUX’s Cerulean Sea may be exactly what the doctor ordered. Just one coat and you’ll feel like you’re transported onto a beach with a tropical drink in hand.  The best part of the VINYLUX Weekly Polish System is that it is designed to prevent yellowing and breakdown, allowing your manicure to last longer than with traditional polish.

BeachyMani_takemetoyourleader_3

For a lighter take on our newest favorite nail polish shade, try Morgan Taylor’s Take Me To Your Tribe.  This gorgeous light blue crème adds a fresh and exciting feel to the classic manicure.

Beachymani_goingnative_1

If blue is calming, then turquoise must be the epitome of tranquility.  Morgan Taylor has once again hit the mark with Going Native, a relaxing turquoise just begging to be shown off in front of a sandy palm tree laced backdrop.

BeachyMani_LushTropics_6

While blue is certainly the perfect summer option, this list wouldn’t be complete without a pop of green.  Might we suggest CND VINYLUX’s Lush Tropics for a daring-in-your-face summer mani.

So this summer, ditch the pale pinks and reds in favor of a color inspired by the sea.

Summer Beauty Tips: How to Avoid Green, Brassy Hair

OK, it’s getting really hot, and lots of folks are heading to beach or splashing in swimming pools. Between the chlorine at the pool and salt water at the beach, your hair is under constant attack.  This assault on your locks is especially hard for blonds.  Light hair has a tendency to become brassy or develop a greenish-hue after being exposed to an entire summer in the water.

So why does your hair change color?  The main culprit is the copper found in the water that oxidizes on your hair and results in a change of color.  Combine that with the other chemicals found in your pool and/or salt water that can make color fade and you have the perfect cocktail for … you guessed it, “The Hulk”style green hair.

No need to fret, Fashion Reverie is here to save your locks no matter if your naturally golden or a bottled blonde.

Pre-treat

It’s important to take precautions for your hair’s health before you dive right in to those excursions on the beach or in the pool.  Try soaking your hair with tap water or a bottle of water before going into the pool to prevent it from soaking up too much chlorinated water. You can also apply conditioner to your wet strands to nourish it and block out chemicals.  However, if you just highlighted or dyed you hair, you might want to take extra measures to ensure that your color doesn’t alter or fade.  Try using a sealant (available at most beauty supply stores) that is designed to protect your hair and lessen the amount of chemicals absorbed while you’re splashing around.

Post Beach/Pool

Rinse your hair right away! It’s great to go straight from the water to a drink with friends but especially with chlorine, you want that out of your hair, pronto!!  Augusta Falletta of Beauty High suggests combating the copper in your pool with an acidic hair rinse.  Falletta points out a good trick for a quick rinse is as simple as dissolving aspirin in warm water.   In order to make this easy at-home fix, dissolve several regular pills— we’ve heard up to 8 aspirins will do the trick—in warm water and saturate your hair with the mixture.  Let the aspirin water permeate your hair for about 15 minutes and then rinse it out and shampoo and condition as usual.

Falletta also recommends using a purple shampoo, “strange as it may sound, purple shampoo keeps your hair color from turning brassy, which can happen with other shampoos that aren’t specifically formulated for blonde hair.”

Musician Makeunder

Downloads304Gimmicky flashy outfits and crazy-over the top wigs may be a thing of the past for all our favorite musicians.  While these crazy looks certainly grabbed our attention in the past, our favorite stars are turning back from their extravagant ways and trying on a softer look.

Nicki Minaj is known equally for her rapping skills as she is for her envelope-pushing outfits, neon-colored wigs, pink lips, and all. Sometimes, she has been a blonde, other times she has favored pink wigs and then there were the occasions her hair was two (or even three) tones, forming colorful stripes … or mixing together to resemble cotton candy.  No matter what Minaji did, it was sure to be big, with fake lashes, colorful eye shadows, and lots and lots of pink! Recently, Minaj updated her style to something unexpected; she went au natural to promote her film the “Other Woman.”  Now, she didn’t show up in her birthday suit as expected—or should we say very close to naked—but she did ditch the wigs and bright colors to reveal that she actually is quite beautiful.  Oscar James, the hairstylist behind her new look explained that she came to him looking for a new and improved image.  “We did a video recently for a song she has out called ‘Senile.’  My inspiration for that was Sophia Loren, a little Amy Winehouse, but even then she wanted to tone down.  She was like, ‘I just want to be softer.’  And she’s really adamant about [being] softer and more natural,” explains James.  “Maybe she’s trying to reach a broader audience, I don’t know.  But I’m taken aback even myself because she’s so pretty …”

By no means was Minaji the first to play with bright colors and over-the-top makeup.  Gwen Stefani played up her image in the beginning of her career with colorful hair and makeup, loosely inspired by South East Asia.  The 90’s were full of buns, bindis, and bright hair for Stefani before she found inspiration from Japan and its Harajuku Girls.  Since then, Stefani has kept her platinum blonde locks and retro style (including her bright lips) shedding the splashy extras for a glam alternative.

While Lady Gaga, the queen of crazy, hasn’t officially made the transformation to mainstream looks, she did shock the internet with a makeup free (or perhaps minimal makeup) selfie earlier this month and was spotted walking around New York City in a (somewhat) natural state—if you excuse the sheer nipple baring top and ostentatious jewelry.)  With her hair piled in a top bun rather than covered by a wig, Fashion Reverie wonders if Lady Gaga is the next star to show her softer side.

Taylor Swift’s Evolving Beauty

Taylor-Swift-009-1600x1200Taylor Swift first appeared on our radio in 2006 with the release of her self-titled album.  By 2008 she became the highest selling country artist with several chart topping hits.  Noted for writing her own lyrics and playing the guitar, Taylor Swift has also been linked to her age appropriate but still glamorous style.

2010

At the 2010 CMT Music Awards in Nashville, Taylor surprised everyone when she traded in her sassy curls for a pin straight style parted on the side.  While she took a different approach to her blonde tresses, Taylor didn’t stray very far from her usual beauty look, with full pink lips and dark rimmed eyes (with shimmery light shadow on the inner corners) to draw attention to her baby blues.  As the year progressed, Taylor changed her look once again, adding bangs.

2011

Trying to play with her look, Ms. Swift was seen out and about on various red carpets with very different styles.  She went old school Hollywood with glamorous golden waves paired with pink shadow and a bright pink pout at the Billboard Music Awards.  For the American Music Awards, she decided to darken her light locks ever so slightly.  Her intricate side pony framed her face and drew attention to her ultra long eyelashes. At the Billboard 6th Annual Woman In Music event, the fringe was back in soft golden layers. Taylor decided to wear an orange based red lipstick, this tomato hue would soon transition into her signature cherry red lips.

2012

At the iHeart Radio Awards, Taylor really played up her retro-glam style with classic soft waves and bangs.  She took it a step further with her blue-toned red lips and thick winged-out eyeliner accompanied by look-at-me lashes.

2014

Playing with the idea of a bob, Taylor pinned up her mane for an elegant short style at the Golden Globe Awards.  Her classic winged eye, red lips, and faux-bob looked chic and stylish.  Happy with the look, she took the plunge and cut off her long hair, posting pictures and videos of the haircut on Instagram for all to see.

Taylor Swift has come along way from that young girl rocking crazy curls and a guitar.  However, her fun loving vintage inspired style offers a fresh approach to an old-fashioned look.  We can’t wait to see what’s next from the young starlet, but for now, take a cue from Taylor and try out a winged eye and bright red lip or ditch the long hair and try your hand at a Taylor-inspired bob.
