End of July Biweekly Styleout Tribute to Janet Jackson

“Put me on the planet, dammit, where all the sistas look like Janet”

—”It’s On”  Naughty By Nature

This year, the globe has been in flux. From a viral pandemic to killer hornets to global civil rights protests, the world is getting rocked. However, through it all, we’ve seen people come together in love and unity.

This July, Fashion Reverie has trained its lens on two of the most powerful forces on Earth, love, and protest. While we are witnessing how both are changing our world, we are realizing that we need both now more than ever. During times of change, the voice of the people has often come in the form of music, and one musician who has always been on the forefront of social justice and love is Janet Jackson.

From asserting herself in Control and tackling global issues in Rhythm Nation to exploring sensuality and sexuality in her janet. and Velvet Rope albums, Miss Jackson (if you’re nasty) has been a universal force du jour. Fashion Reverie recognizes her as a game changer who has lent her voice to the struggles of the world—the battle for equality, the fight for education, the need to feel loved, and the agency of freedom (physical, mental, sexual, or otherwise.)

In addition to her record shattering music, Janet is visually stunning! She has always complimented her albums with extraordinary music videos. From her limber dancing in “The Pleasure Principle” and zoot suits in “Alright,” to synchronized military moves in “Rhythm Nation,” and a toned bare midriff in” If,” Janet Jackson is our style icon, now and forever. Her music and fashion sense serve as the inspiration for our style-out in this month’s themes “Summer of Love” and “Summer of Protest.”

Editors’ Pick: Maxi Cassini Explores Anti-Establishment Fashion with the Loha Vete Fall 2020 Collection

Does it feel like we are living in an apocalypse? If your answer is yes, then you are feeling what a lot of folks are feeling. We are not quite in the “Escape from New York” movie aesthetic; however, if things don’t get better, and fast, we might get there faster than expected.

Nihilism and apocalypse aside, it is a challenge to be thinking about luxury fashion when the world seems to be going amuck. Still, you cannot throw the baby out with the bath water, because there is a raging viral pandemic, climate disaster, and our Commander-in-chief seems to be perpetually stuck on stupid. If you are not comfortable with looking glamorous in these perilous times, but still want to express your fashion sense, Fashion Reverie has a viable alternative.

Let your rebel yell come out and your ‘f**k the establishment’ shine through with Loha Vete’s latest collection. Remember, you can be irreverent with a little tongue-and-cheek thrown in for good measure with the Loha Vete fall 2020 collection.

Drawing inspiration from the mundane to the insane, the Loha Vete designer, Maxi Cassini, explores the beauty found in destruction, often elevating everyday overlooked elements into wearable art. Walking the thin line between love and hate, the collection incorporates opposing aesthetic perspectives of disheveled glamour to polished elegance. Approaching the design process with an appreciation for the unique and outrageous, an attitude of unexpected irreverence and satire, and an utmost focus on quality and craft, Loha Vete is a realist brand that strives to create luxury pieces that sit on the fine edge of fashion.

Just as with your favorite old tee shirt, or a jacket you find in a thrift store, the story attached to the garment is what makes it meaningful. Thoughtfulness is a luxury that we don’t often see with clothing today. Adding small memory foam panels to the inside of hand embroidered destroyed jeans is an example of what occupies Loha Vete’s mind-set. Loha Vete could not be further from disposable, it is a label that is both original and unmistakable.

(Inside tip: If you are participating in social protests, these are great garments that will spark conversation and demonstrate that your ‘f**k the establishment’ stance comes with a bit of humor. Hey, we need some belly laughs right now.)

Editors’ Pick: Betzabe Gonzalez’s Floral-inspired Summer 2020 Footwear for Mia Becar

“Florals for spring, hmm, groundbreaking.” You must be living under rock not to recognize that iconic line uttered by Miranda Priestly (Meryl Streep) in “The Devil Wears Prada.” Though Miranda Priestly was being sarcastic and throwing shade in the film, florals for spring, when done the right way, can bring a new energy and freshness to any spring/summer style.

Founded in 2018, in Los Angeles, Mia Becar is an American brand led by Founder and Creative director Betzabe Gonzalez. Each collection reflects Betsy’s love of exotic colors, bold silhouettes, the travel that inspires her and her passion for artisanal traditions and techniques.

For spring/summer 2020 Betzabe Gonzalez looked to florals that one might find traditional floral carpets created at Italy’s Infiorata festivals.  Gonzalez turned this inspiration into two styles, a slingback and sandal featuring exquisite woven embroideries. These two styles would great with a night out on the town ensemble, or works just a well for a daytime look, paired with denim slacks, denim jumpsuit or a wide range of daytime looks. These floral-embroidered shoes will elevate any daytime look.

Mia Becar produces monthly capsule collections that debut digitally on MiaBecar.com, allowing the brand to work more organically and more in tune with the desire of clients. The designs, handcrafted in Italy from the finest of materials, are intended to be transitional, as well as functional—so that the wearer feels confident, but also comfortable, as she navigates through her day. Designs epitomize sophistication, quality, impeccable craft, and everlasting beauty, celebrating all that is feminine, powerful, sensual, and timeless.
