Inbal Dror Bridal Fall 2020

If you are familiar with Inbal Dror than you are aware that her bridal gowns are a compilation of fashion-forward sensibility, sexiness and sensuality, and a modern projection toward couture. Inbal Dror’s bridal collections are not necessarily for that modern bride who is looking for a traditional gown—although she might be able to find something that fits that ilk. Inbal Dror’s bridal collection are for that bride that is confident in her body and not afraid to push boundaries. This fall 2020 bridal collection is in that vein.

For fall 2020 Inbal Dror by the glow that a modern bride has on her wedding day. Inbal Dror expresses this glow in a halo—visible or invisible.  “… the bride glows on her wedding day with a halo, making her the center of a spiritual event. She is a symbol of devotion and tradition. Her dress reflects the eternal feelings she emanates and magical look—it is a fashion icon …,” explains Inbal Dror.

With a variety of halos adorning the heads of the bridal models, this bridal collection consisted mostly of very sheer dresses in a variety of fabrications. True to the brand’s DNA there was a lot of sexy and revealing bridal gowns from tea dresses to fit and flare to gowns with very high slits. Still, Inbal Dror continued her predilection for using lots of embellishments from silver, pearl and 3D appliques, mirror embroidery, and 3D floral accents.

If there was one departure in this outing, it was the transparency and sheerness of the bridal gowns. Perhaps, Inbal Dror adopted this projection because it stayed on the theme of bridal heavenly glow, allowing that glow to shine through the diaphanous garments. In that respect, this collection looked a lot like a bridal collection one would experience with a bridal brand like BERTA.

Standouts in this collection includes the nude deep V point d’esprit gown with 3d floral shoulder accents, tulle one shoulder asymmetric cape over strapless mini with silver, pearl and 3D appliques, deep V tea-length drew with mirror embroidery and silver bows, long-sleeve ivory stretch chiffon gown with silver-beaded bodice, and nude tulle cape sleeve sheath with silver beading and thigh-high slit.

Kyle + Shahida Spring 2020

New York City, New York City girl

Runnin’ pretty, New York City girl (twenty-five, thirty-five)
Hello, baby, New York City girl

You grew up ridin’ the subways, running with people
Up in Harlem, down on Broadway
You’re no tramp, but you’re no lady, talkin’ that street talk
You’re the heart and soul of New York City

                                                              —Odyssey

This 70s disco tune by the group Odyssey describes the heart and soul of a New York City woman. And though this hit song was created over 40 years ago, the description of the atypical New York City woman still applies.

With that in mind, it a mystery why Kyle Richards of the reality show “The Real Housewives of Beverly Hills” with designer Shahida Clayton would debut her fashion collection at New York Fashion Week: The Shows (NYFWS), a collection that is the antithesis of a New York City woman.

The easy, breezy West Coast casual vibe of Kyle + Shahida’s spring 2020 collection was absolutely appropriate for an Los Angeles consumer, maybe even an Atlanta or Dallas woman, but for the New York City consumer, for the most part, this collection just doesn’t fly, as many fashion editors after the show agreed. But, maybe appealing to a NYC consumer was not the point of this collection.

Gone are the days when NYFWS fashion shows attracted that fashion savvy New York City consumer and fashion industry professionals. Motivation behind the current kaleidoscope of shows could be just be showing the collection New York City, for an Instagram audience or for other reasons that have nothing to do with retail or even fashion industry professionals.

Perhaps, the NYFWS debut of Kyle + Shahida spring 2020 collection had other intentions in mind. (Bravo could use clips from the runway show in an episode of “Housewives of Beverly Hill,” particularly with so many “Housewives” from different franchises walking in the show. Even using the New York debut to acquire more investors.) Whatever the reason for presenting in New York City, this spring 2020 collection had nothing to do with a New York City consumer.

Images courtesy of Andrew Werner

That said; there were some positives about this spring 2020 collection. The collection was styled very well and there were some good looks, particularly separates, in the collection. Still, the casual West Coast aesthetic of flowing, unfettered garments seen in this collection can already be found in JC Penny’s—well, maybe a level higher—and in mega stores of that ilk.

Standouts in this collection include the brand’s burgundy long-sleeve dress with ruched torso, scoop-back blazer with bondage bandeau top and red vegan leather paper bag pant, yellow tropical  bird print tow-tier long button-down dress with ruffle sleeve, and Aztec gold chiffon one-shoulder ruffle mini dress.

MODERN FAIRY TALES

Everyone loves a good fairy tale. Whether you like the subtly, frightening Grimm fairy tales or the moral-based fairy tales of Hans Christian Anderson, fairy tales always distill great truths about society and the moral condition. And these great truths evoke memory and imagination because these stories are wrapped in the shroud of fantasy, magic, and glamour.

In this editorial Fashion Reverie examines five all-time favorite fairy tales—Cinderella, Rapunzel, The Three Little Pigs, The Emperor’s Clothes, and Little Red Riding Hood—seen through the lens of 80s street style. Fairy Tales, after all, can teach you a lot of life. And if you add in some great fashion, there is no better way to celebrate style and fantasy!!

Should NYFW: Men’s Be Aligned with New York Fashion Week: The Shows?

Men’s Fashion Month spring 2020 season is about to end, and while London, Milan, and Paris saw their celebrated slate of shows, New York Fashion Week: Men’s (NYFWM) spring 2020 season was lackluster collection of mostly emerging designers. As the NYFWM’s calendar gets slimmer and slimmer, many in the industry are asking if there is still a need, more importantly, a desire for NYFWM, and if NYFWM should be aligned with New York Fashion Week: The Shows [NYFWS]. This recent NYFWM season was moved by the CFDA to align with the women’s resort calendar in attempt to add more credibility. Didn’t work!! It appears that NYFWM is fallen off the fashion radar.

When NYFW: Men’s began it didn’t have the gravitas of some of the more distinguished international men’s Fashion Week’s—Milan, Paris, and even London. Still, NYFWM’s was a great way for independent and emerging designers to showcase their collection, and there was a small bevy of headlining menswear brands—John Varvatos, Todd Snyder, Tommy Hilfiger, Nautica, and Polo Ralph Lauren that added a level of prestige to the event.

Todd Synder fall 2018

This past NYFWM saw less than 20 shows, most of which were presentations featured at the annual New York Men’s Day. There was virtually no presence of international editors or buyers, and compared to past seasons, there was very little press coverage aside from WWD. Most of the mainstream American menswear brands have jumped ship, so to speak, leaving just a few unimpressive brands, mainly of whom, over a short period, fade into oblivion.

Fashion writer Alex Blynn believes that NYFW: Men’s is no longer necessary because, “gender in clothing is really going out of style and having a [Fashion Week] that’s specifically [men’s fashion] seems behind the times in some ways.”  Blynn added, “I think we’re all brave enough now in 2019 to have our fashion fully integrated, and to stop compartmentalizing everyone all the time …”

Blynn pointed to the growing popularity of genderless brands, like Palomo Spain, who use mostly cisgender male models, but have many pieces that could be easily categorized in the traditional womenswear category. Blynn isn’t for completely ending NYFW: Men’s though, contending, “I think it still has a place for a core audience and consumers and is still an important event that shows incredibly talent and artistry.” However, like many, he isn’t so hopeful for its future.

Vincent Lane, editor-in-chief of The Garnette Report, believes that NYFW: Men’s should “Just be combined with women’s because it hardly gets any recognition or press, they have very few limited days, and in addition they don’t put too much effort into the shows. People mostly fly out for [the women’s shows]. Menswear would be helped by mixing it with [the women’s shows].”

There are some fashion industry professionals on the opposite side of the coin who see NYFWM’s as a necessity for emerging menswear designers and that it should be a standalone as a fashion week. Style consultant Zoey Cross says, “We still need [NYFWM]. The interest has built around men’s fashion and the many different lanes of men’s fashion. [NYFWS] alone doesn’t give that opportunity for men’s designer. Menswear designers need an opportunity to show off their talents standalone and truly be appreciated.”

Custom wear designer and stylist Jevin Kinard also believes that NYFW: Men’s is still necessary but, “It needs more sponsorship and presence.” “If it continues under the lack luster disorganized course it’s on, I would say just end it overall.”

When NYFWM’s began it had a slate of impressive sponsors including Amazon and Cadillac, in addition to a main venue at Skylight Clarkson Square. Once it lost Amazon as a sponsor, as well as the main venue of Skylight Clarkson Square, it was all downhill from there.

NYFWM’s is not without an audience. and for emerging US designers looking for a boost for their brands, it is a good place to present collections. Still, with NYFWS recently reducing its calendar to five days and five nights, as proposed by CFDA’s incoming chairman Tom Ford, incorporating NYFWM into NYFWS might not be a bad idea.  That is the way it was for several decades.

The future of NYFWM hangs in the balance as fashion continues to change. But as the late, great Diana Vreeland famously imbibed, “fashion is both now and next.” What’s next for NYFWM? Time will tell.

Must-Have Spring 2019 Trends

Images courtesy of thecut.com

Winter has officially overstayed its welcome, and we are totally over it. Leave the monochromatic earth tones in the past as we retire past trends for a mix of patterns, prints, and power pastels. From feather flair to Cali-inspired tie-dye, high-end biker shorts, and ‘itty bitty teeny weeny’ handbags, these are the key trends to ready your wardrobe for the spring 2019 season. Here’s Fashion Reverie’s biggest spring 2019 trends:

Crochet Craze

A resort wardrobe need, this nautical bohemian trend is making a high impact on fashion. From hippie chic to modern luxury, the crochet granny-inspired trend will make her proud. The woven options are endless from matching sets, tops, rompers, bikinis, bags, and berets. Victoria Beckham, JW Anderson, Oscar de la Renta, and Phillip Lim are just a few of the designers integrating this delicate dainty craftwork into their collections.

Biker Shorts

Designers Chanel, Fendi, Prada, Jacquemus, and Roberto Cavalli have taken this trend to a new level with animalistic prints, bold colors, embroidered designs, and unique fabrications. Once considered a fashion don’t, cycling shorts are the new short of 2019. Kardashian-approved, biker shorts are not only for the gym. This athletic-inspired trend is still gaining traction and will continue to popularize within the year. Is it possible that biker shorts will replace leggings?

Feather Flair

Jump to a feather touch for spring 2019 as this couture silhouette offers sensuality and is anything but subtle. Designers No.21, MSGM, Oscar de la Renta, Celine, Saint Laurent, Burberry, Rochas, and Tom Ford are opting for this glamourous frou frou detail. Whether it’s ostrich or peacock feathers, this fun and whimsical embellishment is taking over the faux fur scene.

Zebra Print

Get close to the wild outback in this animal instinct take over. From classic coats, accessories, slouchy bags, and knee-high boots; Other Stories, Topshop, Phillip Lim are jumping on the safari train with inspired patterns. Although leopard and cheetah print are the go-to print, consider the cool girl alternative, zebra print. This new optical illusion animal print has been spotted on the streetwear queens themselves, Kendall Jenner and Bella Hadid.

Lavender Love

One might recall Ultraviolet as the color of the year for 2018, yet the range of hues are endless as pastels are popping on and off the runway. From lavender to eggplant, this purple pastel screams springtime.  Leave Millennial Pink in the past, as street styles are loving a softer, flattering, and feminine color.

Micro Mini Bag

Flooding our Instagram feeds, Simone Porte Jacquemus introduced his small, yet impactful tiny accessory. Bag lady, it’s time to downsize with this new microscopic nano “It” bag; as our accessories continue to shrink smaller and smaller opt to only bring the necessities. Welcome to the year of downsizing.

Tie Dye

Say goodbye to your monochromatic palette, as this tie dye renaissance is an unexpected spring trend. As “this year’s most woke trend,” Beyonce herself is embracing this psychedelic color comeback. Taking a more fashion-forward approach, the evolution of this creative handmade process has now elevated to high fashion status with couture fabrics, unexpected shapes, acid washes, denim applications, embellishments, and feminine silhouettes. A symbol of individuality and a reflection of freedom and hope, tie-dye is a representation of a peaceful future to come.

Silk Scarf Prints

Spring 2019 is the season of prints. In power print clashing glory, every designer is embracing statement prints and patterns. No longer just a standout accessory, designers have transformed traditional scarf motifs into elaborate creations. Known for its chic flair and retro styling this trend is a mix of travel, leisure, bohemian and Orientalist themes. Dominating accessible brands Zara and ASOS, silky and drape-like scarf prints have taken on the runway at Versace, Balenciaga, and Jacquemus.
