OK, it’s the end of July but that doesn’t mean you are going to be stuck with an outdated hairstyle for the summer music concert season. Whether you attending music concerts featuring Alicia Keys, Blake Shelton, Jessica Simpson, or The Band Party at the Rio Olympics—wouldn’t that be a dream, partying in Rio with pop/country music sensation The Band Party— your coif should demand attention.
There is still some time left!! Remember, summer music concerts don’t end til around Labor Day!! This concert season, ditch the basic black in favor of an array of rainbow brights! To keep the look downtown cool rather than cartoonish, expert colorist with Schwarzkopf, Lyndell Mansfield, gave us a few colorful suggestions.
Mansfield recommends a watercolor effect for a bright twist. “Take a painterly approach with this particular look the blending of purples into blues give such depth and character to the hair, and you can experiment with any of the shades—there are no rules!”
To get the look you’ll need to begin by pre-lightening your hair (if required) to a “perfect light blonde.” Mansfield suggests Schwarzkopf LIVE Intense Lightener Max Blonde. Now you can begin applying the dye. Massage in Schwarzkopf LIVE Ultra Brights of Pastel Electric Blue Colour Cream from the tube directly onto the roots of the hair. Make sure to blend the color out into the first few inches of hair. Section off and secure the top part of the hair with a clip. To create the lighter blue shade, Mansfield suggests mixing Schwarzkopf LIVE Ultra Brights or Pastel Electric Blue with the hydrating conditioner in pack. “Apply to the mid lengths of the hair, taking care to “smudge” the color into the existing vibrant blue at the top of the hair to create a gradual blend. Remove the top section from the clip and do the same to those lengths.”
Last but not least, it’s time for the purple. You can create this shade by mixing Schwarzkopf LIVE Ultra Brights of Pastel Purple Punk the same way you did with the blue. Apply the purple shade throughout the mid lengths and ends of hair “again taking care to smudge into the blue to create a gradual blend.” Let the color sink into your hair for 20 minutes and rinse!
Or play up a candy stripe like this gorgeous pastel ‘do. “This is such a pretty summer color blend. Experiment with a hybrid of candy-colored stripes that you love best and blend them together to create this soft pastel-Grunge look,” Mansfield explains.
To recreate the look at home start again by lightening hair, to create a soft base to apply colors to. Then mix your dyes with the conditioner packets until you achieve the colors you’re after. For this look, Mansfield used Raspberry Rebel, Purple Punk, Electric Blue and Pillar Box Red. Then start by sectioning and pinning your hair into small knots. “This technique will ensure multi-tonal strew placement and the ‘Candy Stripe’ effect.” Untwist the knot from one section and paint the strands with your chosen shade. Apply the color generously and make sure “smudge” or rather massage the color from root to tip.
Then twist the hair back into a knot and once again, secure it with a bobby pin. Continue this process until all the knots have been dyed. Mansfield recommends doing one color first then changing gloves before applying the next color. You may need to enlist the help of a friend. Let the colors permeate for 20 minutes before rinsing it out and styling!
