Beauty Trend: Prism and Thermal Highlighters

The prism highlighter trend has taken the Internet and social media by storm and inspired a wave of other colorful beauty-inspired looks. The original color palette, designed and handmade by Bitter Lace Beauty founder, Jenna Georgescu, gives the effect that the wearer is standing next to an actual prism of color, the soft rainbow effect glowing lightly on her face.

Perhaps it’s our love of all things rainbow and unicorns … or the delicate yet interesting sheen it leaves on the wearer, but the prism trend took off.  In an interview with Racked, Georgescu explains she released Prism specifically for St. Patrick’s Day, but after it took off she made it a permanent part of her collection.

Having a problem keeping up with the huge demand, Georgescu has been expanding her company.  “I knew Prism was a unique color that hasn’t been created in a highlighter form before us, but I don’t think I was at all ready for this,” she explained.

Racked went on to ask about the best way to apply Prism (assuming you can get your hands on a pot of it that is) to which Geogescu reported the best way to apply is to simply use your fingers.  “You can go back and forth in the same direction to blend the colors into each other. If you would like to use a brush I find a dense contour brush works in a pinch. Use a side to side motion rather than swirling around.”

To push the colorful highlighter trend even further, makeup artist Iry Randrasana introduced the next Instagram trend sweeping your newsfeed:  The Thermal Highlighter.  Designed to mimic thermal imagery, this breathtaking effect is created by mixing a rainbow of colors with the lightest in the center for an illuminating technicolor sheen.

While the look has gained Randrasan a lot of attention, she was just as surprised as any of us. “The thermal highlighter look was not supposed to be a thermal highlighter actually. That is a term that other people came up with … But it sounds cool. It was actually inspired by a photo that MarceloCantu shared on his Instagram and I just tried to recreate it.”  Randrasan shares.

“It was one of the fastest and easiest looks I have ever made and I was really surprised when it got shared everywhere—from people on Youtube to articles in online magazines …” Randrasan explained.  “I still do not understand why people like the look so much, it was just fun for me and I am just happy that others find it fun as well.”

What can we expect next from this accidental trendsetter?  “I would like to focus on things other than beauty … My dream is to use my social media [accounts] to make a good difference in the World. Beauty is fun and all but I do not want to live for myself,” Randrasan explains. “I would like to donate to a lot of charities … I was brainstorming yesterday about a fundraiser I want to make on my [Youtube] channel to help a little boy in Madagascar that is working as a bus cleaner and earns $1.50 a day to feed his siblings.”
