Thick eyebrows are back! Thank you, Cara Delevingne. Do you remember a dark period in the 90’s when supermodels were plucking their brows into nonexistence?  It made them look so weird.  (Side note eyebrows and eyelashes serve a functional purpose. They keep stuff from getting into your eyes! )

Super thin eyebrows create their own problems. Not only is it painful to obtain, it makes your eyes look tiny. You need to apply your mascara with a putty knife. That being said; you also need to be careful with making your brows look fuller than they really are. But you’re in luck. Introducing a FABULOUS product that will give you thick dramatic brows without veering into drag queen territory; Toppik Brow Building Fibers set. It comes in light, medium, and dark.

Unlike brow pencils Toppik, comes with a wax base you can use to both build up your brows to make them looking thicker, and it can keep unruly brows in place.  Dip the angled end of the small brush (included in the kit) in the wax and apply a small amount to eyebrows to set the shape for your brows.  Now shake a little onto the back of your head and dip the rounded end of the brush into the power.  Lightly dab the brush onto your brows to thicken and create definition. The powder is made of keratin so it will bond with your eyebrow. Long lasting, it won’t come off until you wash it off with makeup remover.

Now, you are all set to flaunt dramatic brows. Cara Delevingne eat your heart out!!

New York International Bridal Week Spring 2016 Hair Trend: Simple, Stunning and Undone

Images courtesy of kleinfeld

Gone are the days of perfectly structured up-dos and elegant twists.  This season the prettiest hair was simple and a lot more natural.  Lead stylist Joseph DiMaggio shares the top bridal trends from the runway, “We’re seeing a lot of braids and very tasteful accessories.  The hair is more up this season; just soft and not too done, not too [produced] looking.  Very soft, very matte finish, very youthful.”

Ponytails are normally reserved for trips to the gym. Angel Mendez from Glam Squad created both low and high ponytails for Tony Ward for Kleinfeld’s collection.  “Playing with the natural texture of the hair,” Mendez took a seemingly simple style and made it wedding day appropriate.

BridalHairTrends_NaeemKhan_Davines_5

DiMaggio designed a soft rope chignon for Naeem Khan’s global brides.  To add a little volume and texture DiMaggio added Davines More Inside This Is a Volume Boosting Mousse and blowdried that in.  The hair was brought back into a low bun that was rope braided.  “Rope braids are really in right now especially moving into the summer [in addition to] braids in general,” DiMaggio explains.  The bun which was designed to look like a flower for an “extra little bridal touch” was finished off by pulling out wispy pieces from the top and the sides to give it that “wind swept romantic do.”  DiMaggio finished off the look with Davines More Inside This Is a Medium Hold Hair Spray to keep everything in place.

At Reem Acra, DiMaggio designed long sleek braids adorned with pearls and diamonds, turning the hair into jewelry.  To get the look, create a strong center part and a ponytail at the occipital bone.  Secure the ponytail with an elastic cord and braid hair.  For the show, DiMaggio used extensions, creating perfectly adorned 12″ braids, but the enhanced braids would look great at any length.

Monique Lhuillier kept hair off the face, also focusing on a center part, while Oscar de la Renta brushed the hair back avoiding any part at all.  While very simple, these more natural looks feel light and airy allowing the bride’s natural beauty to shine through.

Natural and airy, New York International Bridal Week spring 2016 showed us that hair doesn’t need to be too complicated to still look elegant.  We love these braids, buns and ponies for a fresh and unexpected wedding day hairstyle.

Bridal Beauty Alert: Spring 2016 Beauty Trends for Your Big Day

Downloads62Parallel to the neutral color beauty trends seen doing New York Fashion Week, bridal trends are also going au natural.  These bridal beauty trends are incorporating glowing skin that seems as if it’s lit from within, paired with a soft flush on the cheeks results in a radiant bride.  Pops of color on the lips added with a soft smudged liner or bronze smoky eye take the look to the next level, adding a little something extra.

Downloads61

A little pop of pink

Matte skin and finished brows with a coral pink lip are paired with Naeem Khan’s global bridal collection. Lead makeup artist Daniel Martin for Mary Kay shares, “We came up with this look that was very pretty and very effortless.”  “You want something that will complement the dress but not overpower it,”Martin emphasizes.  “Spring is very optimistic, you’re going to see pops of color, a pink on the lip, or a pop of coral.”

Worth the Wait, a semi sheer flush blush with just a touch of iridescence” from Essie’s new bridal collection added a little color to the bridal manicure explains artist Julie Kandalec.  “A lot of women are being more daring.  The French [manicure] is totally passé and I’m so glad brides are finally picking up on that.  Brides are now like ‘I just want to do a pink or red and have it stand out against the dress.’  It’s good because they’re just going straight to their honeymoon,” exclaims Kandalec.

A hint of pink is a great way to add a little color and still keep with a traditional bridal look.  Fashion Reverie suggests Shiseido’s Veiled Rouge in Rosalie, a soft lustrous pink that leaves your lips hydrated and smooth and Urban Decay’s Sheer Revolution Lipstick in Sheer Ladyflower, a dark rosy rich pigmented pink for the perfect pout for that first kiss as man and wife.

Soft stand out eyes

Reem Acra featured soft rosy cheeks that complemented a “bronze smoky eye with a little bit of glitter and a wink eyeliner” shares Cassandra Garcia for Bobbi Brown.  “So bridal, but a little more dramatic, which is perfect for [Reem Acra’s starry night] theme.”  Garcia is also the makeup genius behind the bridal looks at Marchesa’s ethereal, dream-like collection.  To complement the romance and drama, Garcia applied clean white eyeliner for Marchesa with minimal mascara for a fresh and modern bridal design with glowing Bobbi Brown skin.  Playing up the eyes in lighter shades such as bronze, whites, and browns adds extra interest, but still keeps the look natural.  Although Garcia warns, “Don’t try something you haven’t tried before.  If you’re not used to doing a smoky eye, I wouldn’t choose your wedding day to experiment with one.”

It’s also important to keep dark circles and puffy eyes at bay, Fashion Reverie recommend a great nights sleep and alba Botanica’s Fast Fix for Puffy Eyes, a cooling eye gel which uses caffeine and cucumbers for the perfect base for your radiant eye makeup.

NYFW Beauty Fall 2015: The 20s Are Back

While pretty and neutral are always nice and currently on trend, there’s something, well, glamorous about a bright lip and bold lashes. These modern takes on ’20s style are sure to inspire a vampy new look for fall; Fashion Reverie guarantees it.

For Marchesa’s fall 2015 show, makeup artist Gucci Westman took inspiration from the Great Gatsby era. “I wanted to create a more youthful interpretation appearing as though she had been dancing all night,” Westman explains. “Sort of a tousled Great Gatsby sexy girl who’s having fun.”

Marchesa fall 2015 beauty images courtesy of Lippe Taylor

Marchesa fall 2015 beauty images courtesy of Lippe Taylor

Using Revlon products, Westman created super luminous skin with Revlon’s PhotoReady Skinlights Face Illuminator in “Bare Lights” on the bridge of the nose and cheeks, as well as the tear ducts. On the eyelids she used Revlon’s Illuminance Crème Shadows in “Not Just Nudes” on the top and bottom, layering it with Revlon’s PhotoReady Eye Art in “Burnished Bling,” a chocolate shadow. The eyes are finished with a gloss for a 1930’s greasy look just before the models hit the runway. For a sultry pout, Westman lines the lips with Revlon Lip Liner in “Raisin” and then Revlon’s Super Lustrous lipstick in “Black Cherry” for an almost “rusty lip” that’s still pretty and soft around the edges.

To enhance the makeup and a 1920’s flapper aesthetic, Antonio Corral Calero for Moroccanoil created fantastic faux bobs. To get the look, Calero starts with damp hair to which he applies a cocktail of Moroccanoil Treatment and Volumizing Mousse from root-to-tip. He also adds a little Moroccanoil Root Boost to ensure a little lift. Next, he creates a deep left side part that starts directly above the arch of the brow and continues to the crown of the head on a slightly rounded angle.  Calero then curls the hair using a three quarters curling iron barrel on sections of hair starting from the nape of the neck. At the sides and top of the head he wraps half-inch sections of hair forwards (towards the face) around the curling iron. “This change in motion will allow the hair to fall into a ’20s finger curl wave pattern.” Calero allows the hair to cool before brushing out the curls into soft shiny waves. To get the bob, he then pulls the hair at the back of the head into a low, loose ponytail and secures it with a clear elastic. Next, he rolls the pony under, making sure to tuck in all of the hair and secures it to the nape of the neck with bobby pins.  Lastly, Calero uses his fingers and comb to roll the hair at the sides back and under, securing into the bob at the back and then loosens up the waves with his fingers for an “undone, natural look.”  He finishes the girls off with Moroccanoil Luminous Hairspray and Moroccanoil Glimmer Shine.

Alice + Olivia’s Stacy Bendet also wanted a little va va voom to complement her rich fabrics and turned to Stila’s Sarah Lucero. She created her “Swinging Starlet” look combining the roaring ’20s with a ’70s feel. Using Stila’s Stay All Day 10-in-1 HD Beauty Balm and Stila’s Illuminating Powder Foundation, Lucero created the perfect canvas. For those sultry eyes, she used two types of mascara—Stila’s Major MAJOR Lash Mascara and Stila’s Stay All Day Waterproof Volumizing Mascara. Stila’s Lip and Cheek Stain in “Acai Crush” was then applied for the perfect berry lips. “By erasing the extended cat eye, we have modernized and added an edge to the classic Biba-inspired Art Deco Look. The It eye for the It Girl,” Lucero shares.

Elegant and a tad flirty, this retro style is sure to draw a lot of attention! So add a touch of the roaring ’20s at your next outing, just make sure to avoid the fringe and headband or you’ll look as if you’re headed to a costume party!

NYFW Fall 2015 Beauty: CND’s Crazy, Amazing Nails

Images courtesy of CND

Images courtesy of CND

While nude seems to be the main manicure trend at New York Fashion Week, we can always count on our friends at Creative Nail Design (CND) for some amazing (and over-the-top) wearable nail art. This season Jan Arnold and the team really out did themselves.

At The Blonds, the story (and nail art) starts out bright and shining and then turns post-apocalyptic with miniature replicas of transformers and generals’ badges. No matter if you’re into the dark or the light side, these nails are worth checking out!

Images courtesy of CND

Images courtesy of CND

The nails mimic the show, which designers, David and Phillipe, poetically describe in their program. “The Blonds began in a fairytale and we came to life, but is this life reality? No. It is a SHOW! Zoom Back camera! We are images, dreams, photographs.  We must not stay here prisoners!! We shall break the illusion. This is magic! A BLOND REVOLUTION!”

The fairytale–style nails, made of lace and encrusted with Swarovski crystals, are like a “jewel box exploding.” “You can see the angst though, before the bomb goes off,” Arnold excitedly points out.

One of Jan’s favorites from designs from the beginning half of the show is a white leather corset nail. “It’s actually [based off of] a real corset on the runway. We took a white leather corset and kinda ripped it apart and tied it back together again. Then there’s tulle which will wrap around the finger, wrap around the wrist.”

Images courtesy of CND

Images courtesy of CND

After the revolution, the nails (like the clothes) take a darker turn. One set has a tiny cyanide pill buried in a clear tip wrapped in black leather; talk about really going above and beyond! Tiny military badges made of liquid and powder dangle from models’ manicures. There’s even a nail series full of shrapnel. Jan jokes about the popularity of the “shrapnel mani.”

Part of what makes CND’s nails so amazing isn’t just the time and effort (around 900 hours from concept to finish to create these 21 nail looks), but the fact that each piece is hand made and given such care. The nails are an intricate part of story The Blonds tell at their runway show and really pull the whole thing together. Beauty is supposed to be fun and CND certainly has a lot of fun with it!

When we asked Jan Arnold how she felt about this season she explained, “I think it was so fun, this season went a little darker, a little more severe and we love that.”

We love it too,  Jan!

New York Fashion Week Fall 2015 Undergoes a Studio 54–Style Makeover

Rebecca Minkoff fall 2015 beauty images courtesy of Stila

Rebecca Minkoff fall 2015 beauty images courtesy of Stila

The ’70s have been influencing the fall 2015 collections in a big way. Runways were filled with wide leg trousers and retro flare. The influence of the 1970s doesn’t stop at the clothes; it also translates to beauty.

Rebecca Minkoff‘s “Wide Eye Wanderlust” look created by Sarah Lucero for Stila gave us a little of that tough girl vibe. Inspired by that ‘70s downtown, East Village mixed with rock n’ roll—think of CBGBs in its heyday—; Rebecca Minkoff’s makeup look was a grungy version to that 70’s vibe. To get those Bohemian-inspired eyes, Lucero mixed different textures of eyeliners. She used a matte black rubbed in to give the appearance of a graphite black and then an inky black blotted separately between each lash “like a calligraphy ink splat, to mess it up but in a cool way.” Lucero recommends keeping the liner on the bottom for a wider eye effect and then lots of mascara on the top and bottom, “the clumpier the better.” She used Stila Smudge Stick Waterproof Eye Liner in “Stingray” and Stila Stay All Day Waterproof Eye Liner in “Black” for that smudgy effect, and then piled on Stila’s Stay All Day Waterproof Volumizing Mascara. Lucero gushes that it’s an easy look to recreate by just combining the different type of eyeliners.

Rebecca Minkoff fall 2015 beauty images courtesy of Stila

Rebecca Minkoff fall 2015 beauty images courtesy of Stila

Minkoff is very music inspired, so the look for her couldn’t be too pretty, but rather “confident and cool” for the rocker who really did just wake up like this. So to keep it from looking too perfect, if your liner wings out, square it off with a Q-tip for more of a blunt end. Another tip Lucero shared was using a flesh tone liner on the inside of the eye to remove any redness and again, help widen the look of the eyes.

Pamella Roland fall 2015 beauty images courtesy of Wanda Ramos for Clip, Crop & Create

Pamella Roland also referenced in the 1970s in her fall 2015 collection. She shared that she was inspired by “… the world of fashion in the 1970’s Paris as described in the book, “The Beautiful Fall.” “It was a glamorous world of designers, models, photographers and their creative conspirators that have become enduring style icons,” explains Roland. Wanting to stray from the classic Farrah Fawcett ‘do, Roland turned to Ted Gibson for a retro take on his classic Gibson Girl Blow Out.   The look features a bit of height in the back and tousled messy waves, which really helped Roland’s fall 2015 collection, come to life. To get the look, Gibson parted the hair down the middle, spraying it with volumizing spray for body and texture. The hair was then blown dry with a dual bristle round brush and backcombed at the crown for a subtle lift. To achieve the waves, Gibson used a one and a half inch curling iron and wrapped sections around the base of the iron, leaving out the ends.  He then brushed the hair with his fingers to loosen up the curls.

Incorporating the ’70s in to a jungle theme, Christian Siriano filled his runway with colorful printed gowns in eye-catching silhouettes. MAC Cosmetics’ Polly Osmond describes the aesthetic at Siriano as, “Tropical and animal prints with an earth-tones ’70s vibe.” Osmond made the skin warm and dewy before adding a “ready brow with a slight sheen to it.” Next, two of MAC’s Trend Forecast Fall ’15 Colors, “Grand Canyon,” and “Penny Arcade are mixed together and applied over the eyelid for color and texture. For a pop of color, Osmond applies a very bright yellow, “Chrome,” to the inner corner of the eyes. Upon seeing the look, “Christian exclaims, ‘oh she looks like a bird,’ but it’s not bird. It has a slightly kinda ’70s feel to it,’” Osmond explains.

So leave the polyester at home and prepare to step back in time and boogie the night away with these fresh new ’70s styles!
